Need advice on job offer

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am in a predicament right now. I have been with my hospital since June last year working as a .7 ICU nurse and had a good review at the end of October. In November, I started working extra shifts because my hours were limited but some of the senior nurses resented that. I felt things changing especially from my manager. I started to hear rumblings and I knew who were the ones instigating everything. I decided that it was time for me to leave and in January I started applying for jobs. This is what is troubling me now and need advice on.

I was called into my manager's office last Tuesday was given a step 2 write up without ever receiving a step 1 write up. All of a sudden I was told that I had performance issues, was insurbodinate, had integrity issues etc. and my manager hinted to me that I should leave. I knew what was happening (politics) and that if I stayed on I was going to lose my job. Three days after being written up, I had a job interview with a sister hospital this past Friday and yesterday I received a call from the recruiter that I had been offered the job. During the interview, the interviewing manager asked me why I wanted to leave my present job and I simply told that I needed more hours which is the truth as that has always been a point of contention at my present job. I did not mention to her about my write up situation but the interviewing manager told me that I had the job once HR had done the usual background checks.

When the HR recuiter called me yesterday and told me I had the job, she did not mention to me about being written up and instead told me that I had the job. My question therefore to everyone is this. Am I compelled to tell the recruiter about my situation with the write up. I have filed a grievance complaint with my union about being written up and the union rep had told me that I am not compelled to tell anyone anything including the interviewing manager. However I feel the need to be truthful and honest but at the same time I feel that if I do I may not have this job. If a background check has been done by HR, surely the recuiter must know about my write up situation and that it is a non issue with HR. Any advice on this will be appreciated.

PS. I cannot wait to tell my boss off when I submit my resignation.

DO NOT tell your boss off.... you never know when you will cross paths again!!! :redbeathe

Resist the urge to tell your boss off. Be a class act. Thank her for the opportunity she have you, the experience you received,............ Be gracious then go home and throw darts at her picture. Never, never never burn a bridge. Even if you never want to cross it again.

I would not volunteer information that might jeopardize a new job. I would not lie if directly questioned either.

Put the whole situation behind you. "Living well is the best revenge"

CKS - - I agree w/above posters - - SMILE, SMILE, SMILE. Do not ever burn a bridge - you are already in a better place, but you never know when the person you are upset with may take a new job, and end up as your boss AGAIN. It happened to me!

And 'write-ups' do not show up when they call for an employment check. The usual inquiries are dates of employment and eligiblity for rehire. So don't even hint at issues at work. If you wanted more hours, then that is all you needed to say.

Best wishes on your new job, I am happy for you.

Again, DON'T burn your bridges, and keep smiling. It makes people wonder what you are up to!!!!

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will not tell my boss off even though the urge to do so is strong. Burning bridges are the last thing I would want to do. As to keeping mum on my write up, is that a good strategy or am I compelled to tell the truth. It looks like the consensus is to keep mum.

My only concern is that my job offer is with a sister hospital within the same hospital system. The Human Resource department is the same for both hospitals and if they have done the background check, then I can assume that everything is fine, correct.

You are compelled to tell the truth if you are directly questioned about the write up situation. If they don't ask that question then you don't need to list that as the reason you're job searching. Most of us don't leave a job for just one reason. I think you were ok to pick one of the other reasons you want another job.

Unfortunately you can't assume they know. Just make sure you become the kind of employee they don't want to lose. Best of luck to you.

" ..., DON'T burn your bridges, and keep smiling. It makes people wonder what you are up to!!!! .."

good point!!! practice on this act, if you don't have one. I am working on that..:(

Congratulations!!! you should just focus on your new job.

I don't think the new management wants to know all the little details, they just want to know who can meet his/her needs on the unit.

I agree with the advice you've already been given -- don't burn bridges, and don't give your future employer any more info about why you're leaving your current job unless they ask you directly.

Can't help but wonder though -- why would the senior nurses resent you picking up extra shifts? Aren't they allowed to pick up extra shifts if they want to?

At the hospital I used to work at, scheduled extra shifts were awarded based on seniority -- though most of the senior nurses did NOT want extra shifts, in fact most of them wanted (and sometimes got) extra days off (this was also done by seniority when hospital was overstaffed). So I'm puzzled as to why the senior nurses at your facility were bothered by you working extra shifts?

Anyways, best of luck with your new job!!!!!!

Thank you to everyone who have posted. I really do appreciate the advice. There was a particular nurse who had a problem with me picking up extra shifts and would give me hell when she was assigned the charge nurse when I worked. She would comment constantly as to why I was working so much even though she was signing up for extra shifts herself. When I told my nurse manager about this, I was told to work less. Go figure. It's okay though as I am not someone who looks back. I am looking forward to moving on at my new job.

So the consensus is don't ask don't tell, kinda like the army's policy, lol.

I am sure that "sister hospital" has access to your hx. They have ignored your recent "stuff" and deemed it insignificant. :smokin:

Remember it is up to them to get "dirt" on you if they should wish. YOU do not do anything but present yourself in a good light and answer direct questions truthfully.

Wow, that's so weird. It STILL doesn't make sense to me -- but all the more reason to move on! Best of luck!

you did not elaborate on the above statement and no-one asked about it however i imagine there is more to this than her just picking on you. you do not get write up's for nothing. that said, your file will follow you for sure. good luck on your future

endeavors. :uhoh3:
