I will be a new grade in June. I live in Oregon state but I am moving to California. I was wondering what is the best/fastest way of obtaining CA RN license. Do I need to take NCLEX in CA? Do I apply to CA BON before/after NCLEX? How long does it take? Can I do something now to speed up the process?
I really don't know much about this and any advice will be highly appreciated.

apply now. it can take awhile to receive ATT after your school verifies your attendance in their nursing program. You can wait until you pass your nclex under oregon license and then endorse - "license by endorsement". but if you do not plan to give oregon nursing a chance. then apply 'license by examination."
hope this helps.
and when i apply to BRNs i always do priority mail by usps. cuz usps regular mail is somewhat snail mail in my mind.

You don't need to take the NCLEX in CA. You can take it in Oregon for a CA license... just make sure you are filling out the correct paperwork (CA's license paperwork). If you're planning to work in Oregon at some point, than get an Oregon license and then get an endorsement for a CA license.
It really depends on your school and how fast they send out their paperwork and official transcripts. Once the boards get those stuff, then they send you the Authorization to Test and once you have that, then you can pick a date and take NCLEX.
Good luck!
Thank you for the valuable information. I will apply tomorrow, because I want the ball to start rolling.
I have another question. The requirement for chemistry class is different in California than it is here in Oregon, will that be a problem? (we don't have to take lab with Chem, whereas Cali requires it)

If lab has to be concurrent with lecture, it may be a problem. But since chem is a prereq, I'm not sure the emphasis placed on the rule of "concurrent lecture and lab." I know other people have been disqualified from getting a CA license because of the rule, but it was for other "nursing" oriented classes (some of them were for peds and others were lnd).
So, since it's a chem class, I'm not sure. You can call the Boards to verify. Or e-mail them.

On the California State Board of Nursing webpage it has a mailing request form for fingerprint cards. So can we get fingerprinted in OR with this card and send it to CA?
https://app.dca.ca.gov/rn/requests.asp
Another question, is this the CA license paperwork that needs to be submitted when taking the exam in OR?

Hi Ev106,
I was wondering how it is going for you since you posted? Did you apply for the exam in CA? I am in a similar situation: going to school in AZ and graduating soon, but would like to sit for the NCLEX in CA since I am a resident there and would like to work there.
Thanks!

Hi kn_absn, I have my California license now. Couple of things about the process, it took about a month after graduation before I got ATT. Also, they told me they will not look at your application until after you graduated and your degree is posted. So, while my classmates in Oregon were taking their NCLEX-RN, I was waiting. :-(
Feel free to ask me any questions that you have.

Washington moving to CA end of July after graduation
Is there any way to test prior to getting CA's ok? I'd like to test soon rather than later.
How long did it take to get your ATT? When were you able to test? Would it be faster to just register with Washington then apply to CA via endorsement? Thanks!!
