Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been offered a RN charge nurse position at a LTC facility.

The "unit" I'd be working has thirty-plus residents.

I will be on the 7p-7a shift.

I asked the ADON about staffing.

She said there is ONE nurse, and ONE cna for thirty-plus residents; and NO med tech! Which means I'll have to do ALL the 2100 meds, and PRNs, insulins, treatments, charting, etc., on thirty-plus residents????

What about the residents who require more than one assist to get them up?

ONE CNA FOR THIRTY PLUS RESIDENTS?????

I need a job ~ bad! ~ but I don't even know whether to take it!!!!!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?????

Please answer asap!

I agree if that is what they were willing to fess up to I would hate to see reality there. RUN

and keep running! The staffing ratio is the worst I have ever heard. The only thing to gain from a job like that is STRESS and HEARTACHE!

Truthfully, sounds totally normal for my part of the world. Last LTC job I had was on an ICF floor, me by myself all day long. Three aides on days, one on seconds and nights. For thirty nine patients.

remember, its your license!!!! GOOD LUCK

I don't think I have to worry about losing my license. I can't find a job where I NEED a nursing license; because they're all like THIS one, where you can't even take care of the people!

Oh well.

McDonald's is always hiring, LOL.

I wonder if a bit of publicity would change their minds about staffing ratios? Does the public know how badly the staffing is?

Perhaps you could get an investigative reporter to do a story on it, leaving your name out. I think the families of the residents have a right to know about the facility.

Never mind working in the facility -- I coudn't imagine being a resident/pt.

I talked to the ADON today and told her I had decided not to take the position as it sounded like unsafe staffing.

She said "not really", and said "we use LIFTS, we don't use our backs, and we don't have any residents that require two people to get them up."

?

Then what are they doing in a nursing home?

Not to mention......you still need TWO PEOPLE to properly use a lift.

Good for you, Shezam.......I'd rather work at Mickey D's myself than jeopardize my safety (not to mention that of the residents!) in such a fashion. That ADON should be ashamed to call herself a nurse, if these appalling conditions are acceptable to her. I think a little phone call to the ombudsman and the state would be in order here as well......my God, what is this country coming to when our government allows frail elderly people to live in a hell-hole like this, and pay thousands of dollars a month for the privilege??!!:angryfire

Good question!

The good news is, the day after I turned the job down, I found another job closer to home that will be less stressful and they are better staffed!

Yippie!

CONGRATULATIONS!! They say all good things come to those who wait.....:D

Best of luck to you, Shezam!
