Is it red, painful, warm? Could be an abcess that needs to be opened and drained. It's something that probably can be done in your doctor's office or convenient care clinic. (Of course it being Friday your md's office is closed this late, but is there a convenient care clinic you can go to?) Or you can always go to an ER if the pain is too painful.

Buttock, perirectal abcesses are common, so don't be embarrassed. One never knows how deep they really are until they are opened and drained. This usually provides relief of the pain. So afterwards you may have a dressing, or some packing. But the pain is relieved.

Best wishes and keep in touch.

3rdShiftGuy's right by your explanation, but it is probably a little too early to lance it. You probably need the ER or a surgeon to open, drain, and pack it. Most PCP's will not touch it because they do not know how deep it has become. A lot will not even do the dressings afterwards. Of course, give your own PCP a call. You will know when the time is right to have it lanced!

Go to the doctor or urgent care or ER if you muxt, NOW. Don't wait until tonight at 2 am. If it hurts enough now, it is important. Don;t need an infection to spread...

glad I dont live in the states!!

it sounds like an infected cyst. you need abs but it needs to be drained...........I'll do it for you!! we lance, drain and pack them in the surgery here!! and do all the dressings afterwards!! no charge!!

oh and i hope you feel better soon

My sister had something like this on her buttocks, and she needed to go to the ER to get it drained....she waited a while before getting it taken care of and she had to go back several times for it to be surgically drained. So don't wait, get it looked at ASAP!!

Good luck!

I had a cyst about 6 months ago right below my right buttock cheek and upper thigh. One night it got really big and was very painful that I couldn't even sleep. I didn't go to the ER, but I went to a little surgery center nearby and they lanced it, which was helpful. They stuffed it with packing which i pulled out a couple of days later. I've had no real problems since. Good luck!

If need be, Interventional Radiology can insert a little drain in it, to remain however long it may be needed. Don't know how large this thing is, or if you have a fever or not. Have you tried hot packs or alternating hot and ice packs?

It sounds like you do need to be seen, esp if it's so painful. Don't let it go and develop into something REALLY nasty (and dangerous). Let us know what happens.

Has any one ever used Prid, this is a medicated ointment that is for drawing out boils, and temporary relief of pain associated with boils. You can go to your local pharmacy, if they don't have it, then request it. I went to a Wal-greens and they got it the next day for me, and it's pretty inexpensive.

Good luck! ;)

How large is "large"?

And, if we are not worrying about embarrasment here... when I was like 18 and in the worst of my acne years, I had this thing that developed on my right buttock cheek just all of a sudden. Every time I sat down it felt like someone had stabbed me with a needle. Had to manipulate a couple of mirrors, but finally got a look at it. It was the biggest zit I had ever seen! I ended up "sterilizing" a needle with a lighter (don't jump on me people, I hadn't been to nursing school and hadn't learned about sterile technique at that age) and "lancing" it myself. LOL. It drained alright and it was most definitely nothing more than an enormous pimple. I am not advising you to do the same thing though!!!!! If it is a cyst, you are certainly not qualified to deal with it yourself. Just thought you might find my embarrasing experience (now that I have revealed it to you all), a little funny, and it might make you feel a little less embarrased.

Is the cyst on your actual buttock or is it in your coccyx area. Also, how old are you? The reason I ask is because when I did home health we ran into Pilonidal cysts pretty frequently. These type of cysts usually "come up" overnight but they have been under the skin for a long long time. They most frequently occur in 25 yrs or younger people. They usually require excision since they have tentacles and tunnels they form prior to erupting. Once excised they have to packed a couple of times a day (hence the home health nurse)..They take quite awhile to heal. I had one teenager that missed a couple of months of school then when the MD would finally let her sit down for extended periods, I went to the HS to pack her bottom daily...Erin

PS I hope it is only a "pmple"..:)

What the OP stated doesn't sound anything like a boil. Forget the expense factor. I'd recommend going to 24 hour clinic.
