2nd degree BSN in the Los Angeles area

Published

Hello all,

A lot to ask for a first time poster, but does anybody know of schools that have 2nd degree BSN programs in the Los Angeles area (I live in San Dimas, the closer the better, of course...). I graduated a few years ago with a degree in sociology but now I want to get into nursing. I realize I may have to take some prerequisites, but does anybody have any schools to suggest? Is online a viable option? Are there waiting lists for these like there are for associate's degrees? Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thanks...

Mount Saint Mary's is in the LA area I believe. Their program was the outline on which my school based their ABSN program. As far as wait lists go, I cannot say for sure, but most BSN programs are merrit based rather than lottery (like ADN programs).

Welcome to the site! I moved your thread to the California Forum so that you get the most specific responses. Good luck to you!

Hi,

Here is a list of schools for CA.

Good luck!

I understand Cal State Fullerton recently started an acclerated program. While finding out about schools, pre-reqs and the rest, don't forget to also research nursing itself. While there are many different kinds of nursing, most nurses are expected to get a minimum of a year experience as an acute care, bedside nurse & it can be a rather sink-or-swim experience that can be quite a surprise to new grads who (understandably) may have assumed that their education would better prepare them for the "real world". If you have a passion for nursing, then you'll find a way to make it work, but if it's mostly about a secure, well-paid job with only a few years of training to qualify, I'd suggest trying to spend some time where you can observe nurses working (eg volunteer at a hospital) as well as talk to some working nurses about what you can really expect jobwise your first years out of school.

Go to an acclerated program and just get your bachelors in nursing. They have some great programs that make it quick and easy for full time students. Do not take Nursing classes online unless you are already a nurse. Nursing is hands on learning. You can read it in a book all day long, but until you touch a patient it means nothing.

Good luck!

On a slightly related topic I was wondering what its like to live in the LA area as a Nurse? I too will be doing an accellearted BSN program and have always wanted to move out to that area. Just curious as to where people live and starting RN pay if its adequate enough to have your own place etc?

People on the East Coast keep telling me I could never afford to live there which I think is outrageous.

The University of Oklahoma recently was approved to offer their program in Glendale. They offer a 14 month 2nd degree ABSN and a 9 month RN to BSN program there. You can find more info at http://www.ounursing.com/.

Enjoy and good luck to you!:D

Think about CSULA's entry level master's program (program for second career people with bachelor's in another field). It is also available at CSULB. It is accelerated for 5 quarters for the basic nursing courses to be eligible for NCLEX. The incoming class had 134 applicants for 20 spaces. After passing your boards, you continue on for 2-3 years for the master's. Faster segway into advanced practice and leadership positions for the right people.
