I graduated from Nursing school back in July 2007. I have taken the NCLEX twice and sadly failed both times. I am ready to attempt taking it again after taking a review course. I know in Michigan, where I live, I cannot take the NCLEX because it has been over three years since graduation. Do any of you know where I'd be able to apply to and take the exam? I checked into Ohio but was unable to get anywhere. If I am unable to find it anywhere, would taking a nursing refresher course allow me to take it?
I have worked too hard to give up now. ?
Thank you so much for the help or advice you can offer.
Hello,
It's great that you don't want to give up; keep trying! As others have said, try California. I was in the same situation as you. I graduated in 2009 but was unable to take the NCLEX in Texas when I was eligible. Flash forward to 2018; I applied to California and took my NCLEX in March 2019 and passed! I did the Hurst review first and then UWorld, and both helped me a lot. I endorsed my license to Texas in April 2019 without any problems. I also did an RN refresher course which was not necessary, but I wanted to have recent clinical experience before applying for jobs. All my hard work paid off, and I am currently in a nurse residency program with a few other new grads. Anything really is possible as long as you don't give up. Keep trying!
***I didn't have to travel to California either; you can take the test in your home state***

You took the California NCLEX in texas?! MIND BLOWN
NCLEX is a national exam. There is no difference between states (meaning there is no "California NCLEX”). What is different is the state to which one applies for licensure by examination. The test can be taken at any testing center, including those in foreign locations. I could live in Georgia, apply for licensure by exam in Alaska, and take the exam while on vacation in the Philippines (provided this is the first nursing license in the US applying for. If I hold a license in any state, then I'd need to apply for licensure by endorsement).

Yes? Go to the California Board of Nursing Website https://www.RN.ca.gov/
There you will find everything you need to send them before they allow you to sit for the exam. It shouldn't have changed much from when I applied. It did take a long time to process and approve my exam. Check the processing times if that is going to be an issue. In short, I had to ask my nursing school (via mail) to send my transcript to California. I also sent my fingerprints by mail. Find a police station that does fingerprints for background checks but digital prints, not with ink. If you need more help, we are all here for you; good luck!!

Hi! May I know how you were able to get into a nurse residency program? I'm a foreign graduate, and I'm not familiar with how it works. I was told that you could only get into those programs if you graduated within after a year of finishing your BSN.
I work in a hospital system that offers a nurse residency program to nurses with less than six months of experience. When I started the interview process, I was open and honest about my background. Having a BSN and a nurse refresher program on my resume really helped. But I believe the initial interview with the nurse recruiter helped my application go forward. Look for hospitals that offer that. You never know until you try. Good luck!!

Then you may need to travel to NY, Cali, PA, or NJ. Which isn't bad bc at least you can still take the exam again.?
And surprisingly! Finding a place to take refresher courses is pretty easy. I actually enrolled in one in CT. It's fully online. All I did was email them and told them my situation, and I just paid for the course. They didn't need my transcript, only the money, LOL. BUT! they couldn't give me credit for me...which personally I didn't need because, in NY, you don't need refresher courses to retake the exam.

don't be stuck on your limitations when you still have so many options and opportunities. What it comes down to is how much DESIRE you have to be a nurse. Be real with yourself. Ask yourself, "am I willing to do what it takes to be a licensed RN" if your answer is YES, then traveling to NY, CALI, PA, NJ for 1 day to take 1 exam that will change your life will be worth it. If you say NO to the question, then you may have to be real and accept that maybe you don't want to be a nurse. Bc the reality is you CAN do it. Both answers and both decisions are OK. You need to do what's best for you.
***We can only provide you with all of the support, help, avenues, and resources, but you have to be WILLING to accept it. Focusing on the closed doors does what? Nothing but keeps you stagnant. Now is not the time to sulk; you've had enough time for that...it's time to be resilient and to ACT. It's not over. YOU CAN DO THIS.
You don't need to travel to another state; just apply for ATT and licensure for a state that will let you. I took my test in IN, licensure for TN.
