NCLEX test taking and storm Sandy in NYC

Published

Hi All,

I'm scheduled to take the NCLEX-RN on Tuesday Oct. 30 at 8:00AM in NYC. That is also the time when storm Sandy is supposed to "hit" New York City!!! On the news they are talking about a possibility that the public transportation will be totally shut down here in the city so there will be no way for me to get to the testing center! Will Pearson VUE allow me to reschedule the test due to weather emergency or I will have to pay again and wait?? I really do not want to reschedule the test, my mind is "ready" for this Tuesday....Maybe this is a sign....a good sign :-)

I would suggest calling them to be sure what to do.

you can re-sched your exam on pearson's website. just don't do it the day before the exam coz' it wont allow you.

It happened to a friend of mine last year with Irene. She was to take the exam in Atlantic City which had a mandatory evacuation just hours before she was scheduled to test. (unfortunately she didn't think to check before hand and arrived to locked doors at the testing center building :wideyed: Let's just say I learned some new words when she called me to vent.) She was permitted to reschedule her test at no cost. You can call the center to find out if they are open. If the center is open you will be charged to reschedule. If it is under mandatory closure per OEM, you will definitely be able to reschedule at no charge to you.

NYC with public transportation may force closure of the test site (as the majority of the city relies on public transportation) unlike other areas where there is public transportation but most of the town drives private vehicles. I'm guessing if they shut down public transit due to emergency conditions most non urgent businesses will be asked to closed. NYC does not close facilities and shut down transportation without good reason.

Unlike some areas (like mine) that have already closed several schools for Monday when we are not to be hit with the storm until TUESDAY EVENING at the earliest, perhaps early Tuesday. Why not prematurely close schools three days before "Frankenstorm" is to hit? But alas I digress..

Watch the Pearson Vue site and keep an eye on the news, if you reschedule prematurely and Frankenstorm Sandy doesn't arrive you will have to pay the $50 reschedule fee.

Good luck.

Thank you all so much. I'll give them (Pearson) a call Monday and see what they have to say. It is just frustrating, I was ready (at least mentally) for the test and now this!!. As I said maybe it is a sign.... some kind of sign...:-)

Not so convinced that it will be as bad as the latest predictions. I think after the wrath of Irene and the Halloween Snow of last year, the governments have taken the stance of over prepared is better than last year's fiascos.

I can not believe this. I called Pearson VUE and they had no idea if their center will be open or closed tomorrow?!? They gave me a number to call the testing center itself but no one is answering that phone. there is a recorded message that gives you directions to the center etc. then it says leave a message which I did and that was 3 hrs ago. I called back again and it says the voicemail mailbox is full. This is outrages, I'm so ******!!! The Pearson VUE representative tells me "if anything you will receive an email by tomorrow this time" but my test is at 08:00 am '. I can not believe that Pearson dropped the ball like this. No info on their web site also.

Most of NYC is shut down today. However the call center rep is most likely telling the truth as they are not in NYC nor in the storm path. (the times for Pearson Vue are CST so they are definitely not East Coast :) ) It is my understanding that NYC officials haven't announced whether or not businesses will be closed tomorrow. The path of the storm is changing yet again as we speak.

Take a breath, it's frustrating. Have you tried the online live chat? Then print the transcript so if nothing else you will have a paper trail in the event you have a problem tomorrow. Try asking the policy if the city is in a declared state of emergency (don't say that you can't get to the center because NY Transit is shut down) and travel is presently prohibited and the declaration continues through your scheduled testing time. Semantics make all the difference. I don't know if there are power outages in NYC, but it sounds like no if the calls are diverting to a voice mail that is not full.

Good luck. (It's almost never updated on their website, it wasn't last year with Irene when two centers were shut down due to gubernatorial and presidential declarations of mandatory evacuation)

my exam is on weds @ the williams st testing center. i called and lo and behold its closed monday and tuesday but not weds thank jesus.

I just received email saying that the Tuesday exam was canceled. I called Pearson and rescheduled for Wednesday 08:00 AM so roseonye we will be there together on Wednesday :-). Hope that this hurricane Sandy is a good sign for us!!!

I'm so happy that you got your detail...much better than my friend who risked it by driving to the center the morning of the exam during Irene to find out the center was closed/class cancelled.

Best of luck to you, now you have an extra 24hrs to relax. Perhaps a cold shower courtesy of Sandy. ::roflmao: or maybe a blow out form the high speed winds. (Seriously, best wishes for a successful exam so you can move onto the next step of your career)

This is horrible. NYC is devastated by the storm. I rescheduled for Wednesday but I think that im going to have to reschedule again since there is no way that the public transportation will be up an running by tomorrow.
