NCLEX RN Passer (Nov 2014) 75 questions. International Student

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi! I took my exam on November 25, 2014 9am. Just found out this morning I PASSED! (Nov 28). Just wanted to share my experience and give back to allnurses, since this forum helped me a bit to alleviate my anxiety.

**P.S. sorry if this is a long article, writing is not my forte.

Background: I'm a nursing graduate from the Philippines, Batch 2013. Took my local boards and passed June 2013. I decided to have trainings first before reviewing for the NCLEX-RN. So I started reviewing on July 2014. (I applied for Illinois)

Key to Passing: PRAYER! I prayed every morning and read my bible before reviewing. And just be thankful everyday :)

These we're the review materials I used:

1. Kaplan Nclex-Rn On Demand

- I utilized everything in this course. I read the 3 books that came with it, the seminar for international students, basics book, and the content review book. Watched all the videos LOD-Class questions and LOD-Lectures. Answered all the questions basics questions, alternate format, Q Trainers 1-7, Qbank (100%).

2. Live Class and Intensive Class (Kaplan)

- Kaplan here in the Philippines offered scheduled live class (3weeks) and Intensive class (1 week). We just had to pay for an additional fee. This live class really helped me because I found the instructor funny while understanding and absorbing the rationale.

3. Prioritization, Delegation, Assignment (PDA book by La Charity)

- I got to use the 2nd edition since it was the only available edition here in the Philippines.

4. Saunder's 5th edition (yellow book)

- 2 weeks before my exam I really tried to read this book. Especially in my weak areas, but I didn't get to finish the book. But it helped me a lot with content.

5. Also used my notes when I was reviewing for my local boards from Shield Review Center and my Review notes from my Nursing School (TUA-St. Luke's College of Nursing)

My Study schedule:

-From July to October: I studied from 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday, except Wednesday (with 1 or 2 nap breaks since I can't study when i'm sleepy). Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, I'll just study whatever I can.

- 2 to 3 weeks before the exam: I studied from 9am-8pm, Monday to Friday (still with nap breaks). Saturday and Sunday, sometimes I rest and study what I can.

-REMEMBER to practice questions everyday at least 50-150 a day.

Day before the test:

- My mom and I checked-in, in a hotel near the Pearson Vue testing center (2 minute walk, it's that near). Since we didn't want to be late and miss my scheduled exam. I had a nap around 3pm, when I woke up I scanned my notes (lab values, La Charity). I went to bed early like around 9:30pm, but since I was anxious I was rolling in my bed and I think I fell asleep by 11pm.

Test day:

-Woke up at 6:45am, ate my bread and got ready. I brought my bible, passport, snack, water and phone. Arrived at the testing center at 8am, had my palm scan, sealed my phone, got my things in the locker. I went to the comfort room to pray before taking the exam.

-My first question was a SATA, I kinda panicked since I didn't really practiced SATA questions. I just prayed and prayed for God to help me. I think half of my exam we're SATA questions. I remember having 3 consecutive SATA questions. But it also kinda relieved me, since i guess i was having right answers. Then I got 1 drag and drop and the rest we're multiple choice. When I got to the 64th or 66th question i had the optional break and took it. I just had a bite of my snack, had some water, composed myself and prayed so hard again in the comfort room. Then on the 75th question, BOOM! the computer went blue. I really thought i failed the exam. I had super easy questions like s/sx. But the Lord didn't let me down, He heard my prayers. Nothing is impossible with Him.

TIPS FOR ANSWERSING QUESTIONS:

- process of elimination

- SATA: true/false (for me, i had to translate it in our own language just so that i made sure i understood the question and the choices)

-for some of the questions, i got to use the "decision tree" of kaplan

TAKE YOUR TIME WHEN READING AND ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS!

Congratulations!
