Hi all,

im new to the site however i come on here time to time looking at review stuff for the nclex. I am taking my nclex in a couple of weeks and wanted advice for from retakers about how to study. Im enrolled in kaplan, have some hurst material, saunders 5th edition ( blue q & a) to study from. I took the nclex last month and went to 265 in 4 1/2hrs, and was near the passing level in all of area according to my cpr.

You may need to evaluate the level of your nursing knowledge and how you apply it. One way that I suggest to my students is to practice on a lot of the alternate format questions. These questions require a bit more than just the simple multiple choice answers. Also focus on prioritization, ABC's, and Maslow's hierarchy, nursing assessment vs implementation questions. Read your questions carefully making sure that you understand what is being asked. Rationales! Rationales! Rationales! I encourage my students to give rationales for their answers also for the ones that they have eliminated, so that you understand why these are not good choices. Do not overanalyze the questions. Focus! Focus! Focus!

Finally, I would recommend that you find a tutor who can help you to develop test strategies. Remember the NCLEX is based on nursing theory not real world experience.

hi swanson, how does the Davis RN Success book help you in prioritization ?

I used La Charity for Prioritization mostly.

I used Davis RN Success for most everything. There were alternative type questions

which helped me to practice and get comfortable with these type of questions. The clear, simple, but complete rationales helped the most. Also, there were hints that helped me in the thinking process.

For Prioritization, I made up a chart that I would fill in. Based on the chart, I was able to put things in order of priority.

btw, how did you study for sata questions ?

I practiced SATA questions by doing the following: 1. Every multiple choice question is treated like a SATA question. That is you understand why a question is not valid and why one is selected. 2. Know core information - so you can explain side effects and interventions of a nurse 3. learn pharm endings and side effects of the pharm endings, understand Pharm classifications - including major side effects.

Each SATA answer is treated as a single question in my head. Does the answer I am reading answer the "precise" question asked. If I am unsure or have never seen it, the answer is no.

The Davis Success cd had SATA questions on them. So I practiced with that.

The trick to the NCLEX for me was to understand "core" content. Not to memorize every little item. Hurst has a review on core content, Feuer has 11 hours of lecture on it, the Exam Cram by Pearson Vue summarizes the core content that I speak of. (Med Surg).

I liked Hurst and Feuer combined for my core content. Hurst helped me to think on my feet for basic or core information, and Feuer provided all of the rest of the material I needed for the NCLEX. Davis Success was used just to make sure I knew the information, and the test questions can be made specific to the area that you are studying so it is much faster than going over every little item. You study and test areas you are weak on. Each area studied is studied until a passing grade is received in that area.

Hi,

I recommend practice questions. I used only Kaplan and passed in 75 questions. I had a lot of med questions.

- Know all your normals

- Read the rationales and if you see a med or word you don't know - look it up

- Review ur content and know some basics - e.g. know s/s of addisons vs cushings, know s/s of a thyroid storm or autonomic dysreflexia, etc

- first and foremost, manage your anxiety and be sure to stop if you feel overwhelmed
