NCLEX PN 2015

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

hey guys! i'm very new to this site and want to share my nclex experience. i just took the nclex pn on wednesday. i studied for a month, mainly did online saunders questions and ati questions about 200-300 questions a day. the day of the nclex i felt confident. i was usually an A/B student in nursing school and passed my comp pred with a 99% probability(which meant nothing to me on nclex day 3 months later).......after taking the nclex i didnt feel so good. my test shut off at 85 questions, i had about 40/50 sata, 5 meds questions, 2 drag and drop and a lot of prioritization. every sata i felt there was an answer or two where i was life "*** this could or could not be right?!!" i (just like everyone else who is waiting for results) am very anxious. i'm from california and i know its takes forever for results to process. but i can't relax til i actually see my results!!! does the pvt work??? i tried pvt and got the good pop up. i guess i'll wait patiently and if i do pass i'll update my post. i just need some positivity as i wait dying inside lol:cry::up:

the main thing i did to study was practice as many questions as i could. i did about 200-300 questions a day, it didnt matter if i got the answer right or wrong as long as i understood the rationale. i used ati practice assessments/finals(which i used while in school) and online saunders(which was a code that came with the red book). i hardly looked at my ati and saunders book. i only looked at them if i didnt understand the rationale whenever i got a practice question wrong and needed clarification. when it came to meds, i tried to focus on the main meds for each system and nurse implications(BP meds, check BP before, cardio meds check bleeding etc) and for labs i just focused on the most commonly check labs potassium electrolytes rbc etc. this is what worked for me because i'm an audio learner, i cant sit and read a book and memorize what i read for the life of me.

when it comes to whatever books/references you choose to study, i dont think it matters. i'd say used at least 2 or 3 different books. dont get so many because all the books have similar questions and answers and you'll confuse yourself if you try to study as many books as possible. and one last important thing. take plenty of long breaks especially if you over study. good luck to everyone!!!!

omg this waiting is not fun!!

no it is not lol you got this!!!!!!

no it is not lol you got this!!!!!!

Hi. I'm new this forum and just wanted to share my experience.

I have failed the nclex-pn twice and its really devastating and hard to accept. The first time I took it Jan 27th 2015 and had 85 questions. I did minimal studying so I knew I wouldn't pass. The second time I took it Monday and had 205 questions. When I passed the 85th question I got excited because I had a feeling I would pass. The second time I used the Red Saunders book (read all chapters and did questions) plus the online questions and studied the Hurst Review Book. At this point I'm feeling so lost. I'm upset that I've disappointed my family and the money i'm wasting. My mom had even told me to move the date to april. I'm so angry that I disobeyed her and didn't listen :( What can I do to pass the third time? I really would appreciate some comments.

Thank you, God Bless.

Im so sorry to hear that. i would be glad to offer advice but first i need to know some things. im not sure where to start. but when you took the nclex did you have a grasp on the whole concept of critical thinking, maslow's hierarchy, ABCs etc.? did you feel like you memorized a lot of info for all the body systems, med, labs etc? how often did you study? and what kind of learner are you(audio, visual etc)?

sorry im asking a lot but i know everyone is different and has different ways of doing things and i want to do the best i can to help you. just stay positive. whatever money you wasted who cares its money you will make that money up again someday.

i tried to read the red saunders book 2 months before my nclex but that was a waste of time because i'm an audio learner so i didnt remember anything. so i decided to change what i did and just do practice questions online(about 200 random questions a day), then whatever question i got wrong i wrote down the answer on paper to help me better memorize it. there were some days where i only just practice mental health or mother and baby questions because those were the systems i struggled the most with in school. i did this whole practice questions routine for about 2-3 weeks right before my nclex. i think i went into greater detail in previous posts. but let me know how your study system is and we'll go from there

I understand the Maslow's, & ABC's...and labs I was average "okay" with ( I tried memorizing the important ones). I think my study habits could improve and techniques. I would study on/off every 2 hours or so...it was really hard for me to just sit and focus. I would consider myself a audio + visual learner. It helps to see pictures and hear people talk.

I just really want to fix whatever I can, and study as much as possible and pass the 3rd time around. I feel really disappointed knowing that I'm 23 and have no degree/licenses yet. I'm trying to work on pre-reqs for RN at the same time.

I'm going to try my best to do at least 205 practice questions daily. I've also decided to purchase the Hurst Online Review. Hopefully that will help. If you have any other resources, study tips/ advice, please let me know- anything and everything will benefit me.

When did you guys receive your letter? I took my nclex pn march4.. I live in the Philippines. Will it take a month or so?!

i hear ya when you say its hard to sit and focus especially after a long period of time. what i would do is set a timer to about 25-30 min and study as many questions as you could then when the timer goes off go take a 15 min break. after taking a break do the 30 min studying again and take a break. keep doing that until you study for an hour or 2 hours...or study more than you did when you studied for your previous nclex. if that makes sense, you sound like you might not have studied as long as you did before so maybe try studying more this time if you can.

when i was in nursing school i watched a lot of 'dumbed down' ati or youtube videos so i could understand material better. for example in school my teacher said for the endocrine final be prepared to have a question about the menstruation/ovulation process and when the hormones come up....i did not understand it by reading a book so i watch a 5 min video on youtube that gave a simple explanation and that helped a lot. when you do a question and you dont understand it, check if your nclex or nursing school books have videos or try youtube to help you understand the question better. watching videos may help you because when you do practice questions you'll be able to picture the question better in your head because you saw a video/image of it

it sounds like you know maslow's and memorized as much as you could. honestly there are way too many labs and meds to memorize so i just tell people memorize what you can but for sure know the most commonly used meds and most commonly check lab values

dont worry about not having a license at your age and don't compare yourself to anyone around you, you'll just make yourself unhappy. you're doing fine and you should be proud what you accomplished. if it makes you feel better i'm almost 30 lol let me know how it goes

Thanks for the information about the ATI . I failed the nclex pn twice already and its funny because I never pick up the ATI books up after I finish school. I hated ATI so bad . What I used the first time I used exam cram and green book of Saunders but I still failed with 205 questions. The second time I used the ncsbn , saunders, Kaplan but what I realized was the didn't understand how to answer the questions. Like WHAT are they asking for .... Now here for the third time soon I use ATI for review plus Nclex mastery and some YouTube . There is a big difference in review yes I do about 100 to 200 ... ATI breaks it down ...there are people who told me they never use nothing but ATI because that was how they were trained from school from day one... What a light bulb moment for me. Yes I am afraid to death because I have so many books available to me but all it does is get me confused.....
