how important is it to know dosages and therapeutic levels?

very very very important...

i know that therapeutic level is a must to memorize but dosages? isn't that overkill? is it that necessary?

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

Besides common drug levels like Lithium and Digoxin, I'm not focusing to much on levels Dosages is overkill, IMO.

yes very important. se questions are very tricky, they usualy put the result middle of the dosage or therapeutic level.:banghead:

You should proably focus on those drugs that are very popular for example digoxin, lithium, phenotin, heprin, warfin etc. For my studies I am just studying drugs by drug classes.

Specializes in none.

I had theophylline on my exam....I'd definately know the ones Ilovenursing mentioned as well.

My Saunders book has tons of questions related to dosages and therapeutic ranges. I'd definitely focus on common drugs but the NCLEX can throw you some obscure drugs as well. A fellow student of mine took it last month and she said most of her questions were based on drugs and diseases she'd never heard of. She passed though so................

Hi Supafly,

I just took NCLEX this morning and I really think it's the luck (or lack of) the draw. I only had 3-5 pharm questions and not one of them had anything to do with dosages or therapeutic levels.

Thanks. You may be right when you say luck of the draw b/c a lot of people such as yourself say 3-5; but then some say over half the questions were pharm.

I've never heard anyone mention dosages or therapeutic levels.

as far as my experience, I had about 30 pharm questions and as everyone here did, I tried to focus on the major drugs. Let me tell you, I didn't even recognize the names of the drugs they gave me. In fact, I can't even recall the names now. Basically, i found myself guessing on basically all of them. Good luck

i have taken the ncelx 3 unsuccessful times and have had several pharm questions.... many of which i did not know... i think its one of the most difficult areas to review bc you just dont know what they are going to ask.... but keep your head up... i am !! we will pass !!
