As a graduate of a foreign nursing program, the Board of Nursing in the State of Michigan requires you to have a Full Education Course-by-Course report completed by the Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). Since you received your education in the Philppines, your nursing program is deemed to not have been taught in English. Therefore, you are also required to possess a Language Report on English Proficiency from CGFNS. In place of these two requirements, you also have the option to take the CGFNS certification exam. This basically means that a certificate of passing this exam can take the place of the two requirements I previously mentioned.
For detailed instructions in applying for Michigan RN Licensure open the link below and print it:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/cis_fhs_bhser_rnpkt_74438_7.pdf
Also be aware that RN Licensure in Michigan does not necessarily qualify a foreign nurse to work in the state. Unless you are a US citizen or hold status as a legal immigrant, authorization to work in the US is granted by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. At the current time, no visas for foreign nurses (except Canadians) are being issued. It is projected that the wait for those who already applied will take more than five years. If visas open up, there will be a limited number available.
Sorry for the bad news. Look for further information in the Philppine Nursing Forum if you have other questions.

You also need to have an actual license number before CGFNS will issue the CES report. MI will not do a thing with your application without the CES report in their hands first.
You will be applying for licensure as an RN, there is no application for the NCLEX exam for you to submit. You need permission from a state BON to be able to sit for the exam.
Best of luck to you.
I am applying for exam for CES as a requirement with MI BON.
I have also a degree in BS Accontancy before I took up nursing.
I have questions in the CES application:
1) Do I need to send requests for academic records and copy of diploma in each non healthcare school, especially on my BS Accountancy?
2) Do i still need an english exam? ?
If your schooling was not in English 100% and with English textbooks, then you will have to have the English exams before the CES report will even be made available to MI.
Any professional training that you have completed post high-school needs to be included. Then it is up to CGFNS to decide what they need and do not want to use. Never leave anything out.
Thanks for the info suzane.
I submitted the request for academic records to my school. And I am just waiting for the registration date in PRC so that I can also submit them the request for validation
Can I do the mailing to the cgfns after the school and PRC has completed the documents?
What about the english exam, is it what they call IELTS?
There is a choice of two English exams, the IELTS as well as the TOEFL series.
I would not do a thing with even the application for the CEs until licenses are actually issued by your government, CGFNS is unable to do anything to process your file until they have received those.
You are going to be required to write the English exams to get the CES if the state requires the exam, and also for a visa. Suspect that you are going to wish to attempt to get a green card by an employer sponsoring you; the wait for siblings to be petitioned by family member is well over ten years plus. Visa Screen Certificate requires that you pass one of the English exam series.
Hi Suzanne
One of the instructions in the application for rn licensure is the CES/cgfns report and apart from that it says also about completing the NCLEX exam.
Can I just accomplish the nclex exam first while waiting for my documents for CES because I believe it will take a long time to validate my local license from PRC, (Philippine registration authority).
The BON will not look at your application until they receive the CES report from CGFNS. That is why I am telling you to wait until that is done. We are seeing states actually return documents when the file is not complete within a very short time. They do not want files hanging around that they cannot do anything with.
You will not be given permission to sit for the NCLEX exam until they have assessed your file and approved you for licensure. The exam is the final step in the licensing process. That is why you need to get the CES report done before doing one other thing.

You need to read the instructions as written in the form the Board of Nursing in the State of Michigan provided for all its applicants. Number 1 on the form clearly states that "you must submit the application for licensure, ALL supporting documents requested, and the appropriate fee to the Board of Nursing to determine eligibility to sit for the exam". This is the standard procedure that needs to be followed before the Board will even give you the go signal to register with Pearson Professional Testing for your NCLEX-RN exam.
...by the way, if you don't mind me asking this, what's the hurry with getting the Michigan RN License when we have retrogression in the first place? I just don't remember being this impatient when I was applying. And just a reminder, Michigan can be very slow with processing times so expect the worst.
