NCLEX information -- please read

Let me clear up any misconceptions or bad information that you have.

In order to write the NCLEX exam, you must have a letter called an ATT letter

(Authorization to Test) from the Board of Nursing where you plan on working or get initial licensure. You cannot just walk into a test center and take the exam. Miinimum time for getting this ATT letter is over three months on average for a foreign nurse, and over six months from California.

Interim permits in California are only given out once you have been given an ATT letter, not while they are checking your papers. The interim permit means that everything has been approved, and all that is needed is for you to sit for the actual exam.

It is also quite difficult to get a position offered on an interim permit as a foreign nurse. Every hospital wants to know that you have passed NCLEX before they are going to go to the expense of your petition. And what your speaking skills are like, don't forget the English exams........... :)

i'm just wondering, somebody told me that before you could take the nclex exam, you have to be a US citizen. Is this true? Also, can you take NCLEX without taking CGFNS first?

You definitely do not need to be a US citizen to write the NCLEX exam. Yes, you can write the NCLEX exam without taking CGFNS exam for many states, or you can just endorse over afterwards.

[Hi Suzzanne, Please I really need your help. You can write me through this email address [email protected] more information on how to go about this Visa screen, applying for Nclex and getting ATT!

Please do all you can to give me this information. Thank You and God bless.

If you read the "sticky" at the top of this forum, it will explain to you all of the steps that are required to get your license in the US. You do not say where you are living or where you trained.

thank you! If that's the case, if ever i'll pass my NCLEX is it okey if i wont take CGFNS examination? Can you choose where you want to take you NCLEX examination?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

you register with http://www.vue.com and once you have recieved your ATT from your nursing board you can register to sit the exam where you want as long as they have a centre in that location.

Some states specifically require CGFNS exam and will not let you even endorse into that state without having CGFNS exam or at least two years work experience in the US as an RN. You need to selelct where you would like to work first, then proceed from there.

Where you actually write the exam has nothing to do with where you will be licensed.

okey, what are the states that doesn't require cg's? if ever you dont have a visa, could ATT help you in acquiring a temporary visa? thanks.

NY and California. Many others only require a credentials evaluation by CGFNS, but not the exam, such as New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Colorado.

With most of the others, if you get licensed in another state, you can just endorse over, except for Illinois.

With the NCLEX exam going to be offered in Hong Kong and Seoul beginning in January, I doubt if the ATT letter will help you with a Visa. It is very tough to get a tourist visa to the US, especially if you are a nurse in a SE Asia country because fo the money that you need to show in the bank that belongs to you.

Hi Ms. Suzanne,

How are you? I have learned a lot just from reading your messages. Though I have few questions to ask.

i passed CGFNS-July 2003, IELTS - Oct 2003, received my Visascreen-April 2004. INS received my I-140 petition last july 2004.

now, I am still undecided to what state is best for me? I have an option to go to either texas or maryland. i am preparing to take the nclex-rn because my petiion is now under processed. i have visited their websites (board of nursing). i saw in their FAQs that there is a minimum work requirement to be approved to take the nclex-rn exam in texas, of about 2 years? is that really required? would you also have an idea if maryland doesnt accept/recognize IELTS for the english exam requirement? only TSE or ILA OPI. does that mean that even if i passed IELTS, i still have to take TSE, just to be eligible?

Ms. Suzanne, please help out. Thanks again and May God bless you!

Yes,Maryland requires TSE for licensure. I still recommend NY as the best place for initial licensure as it is quite easy to endorse from there and they grant you a license right away. Many other states do not unless you have a SSN#.

Who petitioned for your I-140? Was it an agency?

hi suzanne! thanks for the reply! yes, my agency petitioned me. some of my friends under the same agency were approved already and now waiting for the u.s. embassy interview. they were approved in less than 3 months. do you have any idea if it is true - that lack of experience is a ground for denial of visa in the embassy? thanks for your time.

Many nurses get a green card who have never practiced as a nurse in their own country, or even took the boards in their own country. As long as you have taken either CGFNS or NCLEX and the English exams, and can get a Visa Screen Certificate, you should have no problems.

Good luck................... :balloons:
