SICKLE CELL CRISIS: Oxygen or Fluids??

kaplan states Fluids as dehydration promotes the crisis!!! fairly certain when they say fluids, it is NOT beer!! So if u see beer as one of the answers, i can 100%% say do not select beer!!!

Only one will reverse the cause. Fluids which cause hemodilution so that the sickled cells do not clump together. 02 treats symptoms. Fluids treat the cause this is first.

I actually just came across this question today. I believe that hydration is the priority. O2 prevents further sickling, but hydration stops the sickling process altogether by causing hemodilution.

Beer...depends on the kind. But really I hear fluids is correct like everyone else. Suppose they put treat pain as an option? What's the more important one, pain treatment, or fluids?

Alcohol DEHYDRATES the body.

It works as a diuretic....products that contain caffeine do the same thing.

So pick a drink that would hydrate.

Pain is the priority....b/c STRESS can be a trigger to the sickling...you give pain relief, then O2.

Remember...the O2 is not because someone cannot breathe...it's to decrease the sickling...from my understanding a sickle-cell crisis is excruciating as far as pain...some have been known to commit suicide.

The O2 will take to long to reach relief...that is why if given the choice between O2 and Pain..you pick pain as priority.

It's another exception to the ABC's.

I think they were kidding about the beer, I know I was when I said it depended on the kind. But suppose you have the choice of Fluids or pain relief...
