according to the ncsbn website, first time, us educated students have a 91.23% pass rate on the nclex. the pass rate drops when you factor in international students and repeat takers, but overall the pass rate is still 80.94%.

i am just starting my nursing school journey, and i do not presume to even understand what it takes to sit for this exam, but these results make me question a few things.

(1) with a 90% pass rate, is the test too easy - should a licensing exam weed out more people or is the test just facilitating getting nurses licensed to fill the nursing shortage?

(2) not every person who passed paid the thousands of dollars for fancy review courses - are these books and courses even necessary?

(3) is the cat (computer adaptive test) not as smart as everyone says and should a more standardized test be used.

(4) are nursing school just that good at selecting solid candidates that the most successful students are selected therefore guaranteeing nclex success?

i have no opinion on these items one way or another, i am just opening up a dialogue.

Am I the only one who has a serious moral issue with schools requiring students to pass the HESI prior to being able to graduate? My school didn't but it seems like a cheap (and non-advertised) way to get a school's NCLEX pass rate up so they look better on paper. If you can make it through the program, you should be allowed to take a shot at boards, especially after all the money and/or debt you've spent on school.

I took NCLEX at the beginning of this month. I did not take a high dollar "prep course" to help me pass. I think it's ridiculous that we spend 2-4 years in nursing school only to be told that we much take a prep class to learn how to take the test. I learned how to pass NCLEX in nursing school, as it should be.

I had 75 questions in about an hour and I thought it was very straightforward and easy. I passed the first time.

Also, I agree that nursing school is supposed to weed out weak students. Unfortunately, mine didn't do that. Certain people technically did not pass but were "magically" awarded points to keep them in school because of pity or money or favoritism. Now, those people are having a hard time passing.

The purpose of the NCLEX is to pass those candidates who meet the basic requirements to give safe care as new nurses, nothing more. It is not meant to select the best of the pool of applicants. It has no role in regulating the number of nurses in practice. If nursing schools are doing their job, they should be admitting students who are capable of learning the required information and skills, teaching them the content required, and graduating those who do so. Those students should be able to pass the NCLEX without repeating their education with review or cram classes if they take the NCLEX fairly soon after graduation. If students aren't prepared well enough to pass the NCLEX, either the school, the student or both have not performed as they should. I took the NCLEX earlier this month and found it to be about equal in difficulty (maybe even easier) than the exams we had throughout school. I passed with 75 questions in 55 minutes. So far, every student in my class who has taken the exam has passed, all but one with under 90 questions. We started NS with 36 in our class and ended with 29, so there was some attrition.

Another question... this pass rate - is this information well known? Do nursing schools disseminate this information? When it comes times to take the test, I will sleep a little easier knowing that if I learned the information the first time, I should be fine. Physiologically, this will ease some of my test-taking tension. Thoughts?

Something you have to understand about nursing school - students drop like flies in most programs. The schools do the "weeding" out prior to students taking the test. My school tests us with NCLEX style exams so we are trained how to take that test from minute one. SO most of the students that do take that test are the ones that understand the material and know what they are doing in most cases. There are exceptions of course, but there always are :p

you can get the pass rate for nclex for every program in a state with ease online. google "nclex pass rates by school (your state name)" or go to
