Navy Nurse Candidate Program

Published

Hi All,

I am a RN with my ADN degree going into my Junior year of BSN at CAL State next month. I'm thinking about signing up for the Navy's NCP. To the best of my knowledge, this entails a $10,000 sign on bonus and a monthy stipend of $1000 a month for up to 24 mos. while in school for a 5-yr commitment. Wow thats a long time! For any of you that are familliar with the program, here are my questions....

1. It that amount of money negotiable? I was thinking about asking for repayment of my $8000 in federal student loans I have accumulated from my ADN program as well. Is that OK to ask for?

2. Does the Medical/Dental insurance coverage in the Navy cover both you and your family? Or do you have to pay extra for them?

3. How is the housing on base for officers? Are single family homes available? What is base life really like? Do you like your community?

4. Overall, do you think it is a good experience to become a Navy nurse? It's not all about the money for me, I would rather be happy with my job and have security over anything else. Please some feedback from anyone who served in the Navy Nurse Corps. It would be much appreciated.

Hey Everyone, found a recruiter for the Navy in Oklahoma City, Ok for the NCP program, so far very impressed with her,if there is anyone else living in the Oklahoma or Wichita Falls, tx area, let me know and I will get you in touch with her,..

Great news! That's the first thing off your list. Keep us posted!

I do have a questions that is not specific to the program. What are the physical fitness requirements for the Navy? I'm not a runner (weak angles or I just don't know how to position my feet while running or jogging), but I hear that running a mile and a half is a requirement.

hello,

You can start at the beginning of your Junior year, and yes, you can enroll while you are in the program. I am a Senior this Fall and just now starting in the program effective 6 Apr. Hope that helps!

You just have to have at least 6 months left.

Thanks ya'll that did help! =) Also, do yall know if they pay for ALL tuition or just part of it. Because I'm thinking about going out of state for the nursing program && the $10,000 initial grant will not cover out of state tuition.

They don't pay any of your tuition...it's only the $10,000 grant and then $1000 month stipend until graduation, nothing for tuition.
