NAU ABSN 2020

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello All!

This is gonna be a long one! I'm making this to help future applicants of NAU's ABSN program with some data and info that I've used to help me find peace during my application for the 2019 cohort. *Disclaimer: This info is speculative based on users voluntary data and info they have received*This by no means represents the absolute truth of what it takes to be accepted and how the NAU administration chooses who's accepted into the program* THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE!

Selection Criteria

(GPA, KAPLAN, and PREREQ's)

It appears there is an 18 point scale that is used to compare applicants.

GPA (5 points)

  • 3.0-3.19 = 1 pt.
  • 3.2-3.39 = 2 pts.
  • 3.4-3.59 = 3 pts.
  • 3.6-3.79 = 4 pts.
  • 3.8-4.0 = 5 pts.

Kaplan (10 points)

  • Overall Score = 5 points (scale based on applicant pool)
  • Science Score = 5 points (scale based on applicant pool)

Prerequisite completion (2 points)+(1 point)

  • +2 points for 100% completion of prerequisites at time of application
  • -0.2 points per class in progress
  • +1 point for completion of prerequisites at the NAU Campus

Previous Applicant Data

Pulled this from various user submissions from previous ABSN Cycles. These are self reported stats.

Key Notes

  • 2014 - Applicant with 3.42 PReq GPA + 90% Overall Kaplan was wait listed in 6th position and was ultimately offered a seat. The 7th position was confirmed to also get a position with unknown stats
  • 2015 - Applicant with 3.72 PReq GPA + 89% Overall/75% Science was accepted outright.
  • 2016 - 2nd in the wait list was offered a seat.
  • 2017 - No relevant stats found
  • 2018 - Applicant with 3.9 PReq GPA + 88% Overall/80% Science was accepted. Applicant with 3.75 PReq GPA + 87% Overall/65% Science was not offered a seat.

Kaplan Exam Basics

I took my in California at my local community college by setting up a proctor time with them first and then reaching out to the nursing admin at NAU to then contact the proctor to give them all the details.

My study habits. I focused on Science as my main subject to tackle. I used info available from previous cycles to guide what i needed to study. YouTube and Kaplan entrance exam posts on allnurses are great for guiding you to which questions will most likely be asked and can help narrow down where you want to focus your time. With a BS in Kinesiology the 20 questions that were pathology and physiology based were relatively easy. There weren't any anatomy questions other than 1 question about the 3 compartments of fluid in the body.

Math isn't even worth studying for since you can use a calculator and scratch paper to double check your work. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK AND DOUBLE CHECK THE QUESTION!

Writing/Reading were two sections that you cannot study for in any meaningful way. Just know that there are types of questions that will reoccur in each section like...which sentence summarizes the authors viewpoint about paragraph X? which sentence can be removed from paragraph X? Which sentence has a punctuation error? Which word is misspelled? etc... I used a kaplan study guide book and it really wasn't worth it for me as someone who has already completed a science oriented bachelor's.

My Stats:

  • 91% overall
  • 90% science
  • 100% math
  • 86% reading
  • 86% writing

I finished 40 minutes early while taking one short bathroom break in between sections (phone is locked away by proctor) and was able to print a printout of my score/stats. I changed 7 wrong answers into 7 right answers, 1 correct answer to an incorrect one, and 1 incorrect to another incorrect ?. Moral of the story: GO BACK and RE-READ the question and the answer you gave and compare it to the other answers. I avoided a 83% overall by doing so!

Conclusion

Please! Please! Please! apply to your nursing program. We nursing hopefuls tend to be neurotic messes when it comes to GPA's and TEAS/HESI/KAPLAN scores. We tend to forget that life isn't always about the numerical values we use compare ourselves. Remember a little faith, a little hope, and a lot of guts might be the deciding factor during application cycles. Good Luck!

Hi everyone! I am currently in the NAU ABSN program alongside Cpt ATP and thought I would share another perspective. I came from a non-science background, with a first degree and career in accounting/finance so I had to take a bunch of pre-requisites before applying. I had the advantage of finishing up A&P II a couple weeks before taking the Kaplan, but I still studied my a** off for that test. I studied consistently for about two months specifically prepping for the different nursing entrance exams I had to take (I was applying to multiple programs), probably studying at least 10 hours a week.

I used the following to help me with my studies:

1. TEAS exam prep book - this honestly helped me the most with prepping for the Kaplan even though it was for a different test. I worked through the entire book multiple times.

2. Youtube videos from other students that recently took the Kaplan - I found this INCREDIBLY helpful because I found a few videos in which students would outright say what questions were on their exam. I knew I wouldn't see the same questions as them, but I did see very similar questions and these videos gave me an idea of what to focus on. Here is a link:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=nursing+entrance+exam+preparation+kaplan

3. The Kaplan Entrance Exam Book - I did open up this book, but I used it mostly to study for the science portion. I did not think this was a good representation of the reading or writing sections of the actual Kaplan test.

4. Reviewed my A&P notes - I took what I learned in the youtube videos and focused my A&P studies around the areas those students encountered on the Kaplan.

I am not the best standardized test taker, and coming from a non-science background I knew I really had to prep for the test. I'm glad I did, I was able to pull off a high enough score overall and specifically on the science portion to get into the program. For your reference I got an 85% on the science portion and a 92% overall.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I personally studied A LOT for the reading and writing sections using the TEAS book which I did find to be helpful, mostly for the writing section. I am not naturally good in either of these areas so I personally knew I needed to study for them, if I hadn't I would not have gotten a great score.

@ama397 Thanks for your reply and the helpful study tools! What edition of the Kaplan book did you use? I heard the old version didn’t help at all but I got the new one. Thanks for linking the YouTube videos I hadn’t thought about using that as a study tool!

Hey everyone,

I applied for the 2020 ABSN program and I took my KAPLAN today. I did AWFULLY.

Here are my scores:

Reading: 86%

Writing: 86%

Math: 96%

and Science: 65% !! ?

Good luck to everyone who is applying this year. And to anyone who hasn't taken the test this year, please disregard the advice given so far about studying for this exam in this thread. The test has changed this year it seems.

I also got a 65% in science when I took the Kaplan (?). I was really upset with myself- I was expecting all physiology questions and barely got any! Most of the science seemed to be extremely general bio, I was really surprised. It looks like NAU isn't accepting any exams dated before July 2019 (for traditional or accelerated) so Kaplan must've changed the expected content.

HelloSunshine545 : I'm really sorry to hear that. I understand the disappointment. I was walking in so prepped and expecting close to a 100% on science but I was sorely disappointment when I ran into questions that I don't think I've ever seen before. ? I know my anatomy and physiology really well but I haven't taken basic biology since high school.

I've been searching the internet all day to find evidence of the change and I can't find anything that would even lead people to study in the right direction.

I took the test last year and wasn't nearly as prepared, but I can honestly say that last year's test was extremely different.

Good luck to the both of us, still. I hope that by some dumb luck that the change in the test was meant to drop science scores since they seemed to be getting so high in previous years.

Yeah I hope so, too. Ditto on the good luck!

Ya'll are so lucky.... NAU is my top choice; GPA is 3.92, 4.0 prerequisites, got 86-88% on Math, Reading and Writing, but freaking got a 50% in science (haven't taken bio in 9 years) and I no longer qualify ?. Good luck everyone!! I'm so jealous!!

I'm really sorry to hear that!! It really feels like NAU cheated us this year. It seems you have other options though!! NAU is the only school I can feasibly go to right now ?. Maybe if the scores are low enough this year they'll drop the standards?

I took bio in high school with an awful teacher and never re took it because I didn't think I needed to, and I feel like a lot of other people are in the same boat

Ugh thanks... I know I'll *hopefully* get into other programs, but I only applied to one other one, and was planning on applying to more if I got denied from NAU... so I guess it's better I know now. I told Sharon on the phone about the biology, and my other stats and she said it disqualifies me... I'd LOVE for them to make the exception depending on the applicant pool's scores, but there may be people out there that aren't posting or even on allnurses that got 70-80%, ya know? I'm not hopeful, but we'll see. We definitely got cheated; I was SO prepared for this test based off of YouTube videos and posts here and on reddit, but NOPE lol. Good luck to you though! I'll keep you updated if they do make an exception ??‍♀️

I sent the nursing department an email today complaining about what happened so hopefully they don't disqualify me based off that lol... I was super prepared, too. I study for like a month or two non stop and learned everything I could about physiology and then bam. My worry is that, too ? I don't know how many people took the test who know their bio really well.

Yes, keep me updated! And good luck with getting into a program! What exam did you have to take for the other program, if you don't mind me asking?

Haha, they won't disqualify you for the email, but I'm super glad you did! It's so unfair. They (Kaplan) must have realized people were preparing future test takers online or something... but why throw in a whole different subject?! Ugh.

Yes, I will; you as well! I applied to OHSU and they don't require an entrance exam but do require an interview. At first I was bummed about that, but honestly I have really good people skills so maybe its for the best I don't take another entrance exam ?

Now, looking into different programs I'll probably have to take the HESI and/or TEAS. I see people do really well on these, so maybe it'll be easier? I don't know... what other tests have you taken?
