NAU ABSN 2020

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello All!

This is gonna be a long one! I'm making this to help future applicants of NAU's ABSN program with some data and info that I've used to help me find peace during my application for the 2019 cohort. *Disclaimer: This info is speculative based on users voluntary data and info they have received*This by no means represents the absolute truth of what it takes to be accepted and how the NAU administration chooses who's accepted into the program* THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE!

Selection Criteria

(GPA, KAPLAN, and PREREQ's)

It appears there is an 18 point scale that is used to compare applicants.

GPA (5 points)

  • 3.0-3.19 = 1 pt.
  • 3.2-3.39 = 2 pts.
  • 3.4-3.59 = 3 pts.
  • 3.6-3.79 = 4 pts.
  • 3.8-4.0 = 5 pts.

Kaplan (10 points)

  • Overall Score = 5 points (scale based on applicant pool)
  • Science Score = 5 points (scale based on applicant pool)

Prerequisite completion (2 points)+(1 point)

  • +2 points for 100% completion of prerequisites at time of application
  • -0.2 points per class in progress
  • +1 point for completion of prerequisites at the NAU Campus

Previous Applicant Data

Pulled this from various user submissions from previous ABSN Cycles. These are self reported stats.

Key Notes

  • 2014 - Applicant with 3.42 PReq GPA + 90% Overall Kaplan was wait listed in 6th position and was ultimately offered a seat. The 7th position was confirmed to also get a position with unknown stats
  • 2015 - Applicant with 3.72 PReq GPA + 89% Overall/75% Science was accepted outright.
  • 2016 - 2nd in the wait list was offered a seat.
  • 2017 - No relevant stats found
  • 2018 - Applicant with 3.9 PReq GPA + 88% Overall/80% Science was accepted. Applicant with 3.75 PReq GPA + 87% Overall/65% Science was not offered a seat.

Kaplan Exam Basics

I took my in California at my local community college by setting up a proctor time with them first and then reaching out to the nursing admin at NAU to then contact the proctor to give them all the details.

My study habits. I focused on Science as my main subject to tackle. I used info available from previous cycles to guide what i needed to study. YouTube and Kaplan entrance exam posts on allnurses are great for guiding you to which questions will most likely be asked and can help narrow down where you want to focus your time. With a BS in Kinesiology the 20 questions that were pathology and physiology based were relatively easy. There weren't any anatomy questions other than 1 question about the 3 compartments of fluid in the body.

Math isn't even worth studying for since you can use a calculator and scratch paper to double check your work. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK AND DOUBLE CHECK THE QUESTION!

Writing/Reading were two sections that you cannot study for in any meaningful way. Just know that there are types of questions that will reoccur in each section like...which sentence summarizes the authors viewpoint about paragraph X? which sentence can be removed from paragraph X? Which sentence has a punctuation error? Which word is misspelled? etc... I used a kaplan study guide book and it really wasn't worth it for me as someone who has already completed a science oriented bachelor's.

My Stats:

  • 91% overall
  • 90% science
  • 100% math
  • 86% reading
  • 86% writing

I finished 40 minutes early while taking one short bathroom break in between sections (phone is locked away by proctor) and was able to print a printout of my score/stats. I changed 7 wrong answers into 7 right answers, 1 correct answer to an incorrect one, and 1 incorrect to another incorrect ?. Moral of the story: GO BACK and RE-READ the question and the answer you gave and compare it to the other answers. I avoided a 83% overall by doing so!

Conclusion

Please! Please! Please! apply to your nursing program. We nursing hopefuls tend to be neurotic messes when it comes to GPA's and TEAS/HESI/KAPLAN scores. We tend to forget that life isn't always about the numerical values we use compare ourselves. Remember a little faith, a little hope, and a lot of guts might be the deciding factor during application cycles. Good Luck!

Haha, they won't disqualify you for the email, but I'm super glad you did! It's so unfair. They (Kaplan) must have realized people were preparing future test takers online or something... but why throw in a whole different subject?! Ugh.

Yes, I will; you as well! I applied to OHSU and they don't require an entrance exam but do require an interview. At first I was bummed about that, but honestly I have really good people skills so maybe its for the best I don't take another entrance exam ?

Now, looking into different programs I'll probably have to take the HESI and/or TEAS. I see people do really well on these, so maybe it'll be easier? I don't know... what other tests have you taken?

I spoke on behalf of all the students who took it! I said that it was unfair that the book and the department led us astray on what to study, and that most of us probably haven't seen biology in years! I also contacted Kaplan (I know, I was upset) but they couldn't help.

An interview is probably better! I was bummed that NAU doesn't do any of that stuff, it's so tough to get in.

I've heard the HESI and TEAS are easier, but it's probably all relative. Like the HESI has physics?? I haven't taken any other exams but I have taken the Kaplan twice now. I'm really dead set on NAU.

Hahah thank you for your service ?? but seriously... I told her on the phone and she said something along the lines of: this is why there isn't a time limit on prerequisites, and why biology could and would be on the test (BUT IT IS NOT EVEN A PREREQUISITE ugh) The shittier part is if I had gotten 3 more right I would hit the minimum ?.

I think so too! I actually attached my resume to my NAU app cause I wanted them to see my work and volunteer experience, but that doesn't matter now lol. You got a 65 right? You hit the minimum so I'm sure you're still fine!

Yikes... physics? Lmao... I've never taken that so I guess I'm just gonna crawl in a hole and never get into nursing school lol ??‍♀️ I'm seriously so upset.

Ugh ? I looked it up, too and it's not a requirement. Regardless, shouldn't they tell us what's on the test so that we can prepare? I understand changing it, but most standardized tests have an ACCURATE study book so that at least you study the right subject.

I was going to attach my resume, too, since I've been a CNA for so long but I figured it didn't matter, they probably won't care.

Yeah, I got a 65 I just hope that the whole pool looks like mine!

Luckily I think the physics is covered in the HESI book so maybe it's easy enough? Don't give up! There's ALWAYS a way. Even if you do community college, then RN-BSN. Honestly, if I could start over that's probably what I'd do instead, since university is so competitive.

Hey everyone,

I applied for the 2020 ABSN program and I took my KAPLAN today. I did AWFULLY.

Here are my scores:

Reading: 86%

Writing: 86%

Math: 96%

and Science: 65% !! ?

Good luck to everyone who is applying this year. And to anyone who hasn't taken the test this year, please disregard the advice given so far about studying for this exam in this thread. The test has changed this year it seems.

I also got a 65 in the science and I was sooooo disappointed! I felt prepared as well! I’m so glad that other people has the same experience because I was shocked by what was in the science section!

I am, too! I had a feeling there were going to be a lot of us, and we could all use the reassurement right now! At least if we don't get in we can be assured that we did the best we could, and this was out of our hands.

Hello!

I am applying for 2020 as well and wanted to add what I know. Yes, the Kaplan changed this year. I talked to the counselor about it when I first inquired about applying and he warned me that the test was changing. He said typically they see lower scores the first year of a new test. That said, I had NO IDEA that general biology would be on the test. I have actually never taken general bio (other than high school 15 years ago). Needless to say, I was shocked and upset just like both of you! I did well overall but I was really upset about the science. 90 overall and 70 science. Hopefully many are in the same boat?

I have taken the TEAS twice and I'm happy to share what I know if that helps. I got an 87 the first time and an 89 the second time. In general, I think the TEAS is similar, but I thought the math was a bit harder. The TEAS is much longer. I'm preparing to take the HESI now.

NAU is my first choice and I am so worried about it now. Thank you both for sharing because it helps to know I'm not alone!

Thank you for your input! I wish my adviser had let me know it would be changing, but I am glad to hear that they were at least warning some students about it.

You did good compared to the rest of us in this thread, especially for having never taken general bio at the college level! Honestly I'm hoping not many people did better than you. I just have a feeling that a lot of people either got lucky and guessed right, or they remember their general bio really well. I just know that this year there are a lot of people who deserve to be in the program who won't be just because they don't remember their general bio very well, or at all.

The HESI is much longer than the Kaplan as well, and though I've never taken it, I'd recommend visiting the student nurse subreddit, as they have a lot of resources for both the HESI and the TEAS (just not the Kaplan ? ). Also, the book they recommended NAU students this year for the Kaplan also contains a HESI portion and it does seem pretty detailed?

Good luck on the HESI and thank you again for your input!

The adviser I spoke to told me about it changing when I was asking about resources for studying. He mentioned it would be changing and to be careful about what resources you utilized since they may not be reflective of what was on the new exam. Since there was no bio in any of the books I used for studying I didn't even consider those type of questions could be on the exam.

I'm really hoping you're right and everyone's scores are a bit lower this term. All we can do is cross our fingers!

Thank you for the info about the HESI post! I will check it out. Good luck to you too!

Hey all,

Reporting back in as the cohort is entering the last semester. I am debating on posting a semester review for Fall semester here to keep you guys in the loop about your upcoming prospective program, but I kind of just want to let you guys update each other and essentially take over this thread. Let me know if a Fall semester tips post would be something anyone is interested in.

In regards to the Kaplan, I cannot edit my post to redact the information so all i could do was like @Jess425 post in hopes of highlighting the change. I believe it may be to your advantage, as kaplan will only help NAU gauge applicant pool, so if everyone is scoring "low" then we may be looking at a bunch of your "low" grades be accepted! (emphasis on the quote unquotes).

Here if you guys have any questions, other than that, support each other and best of luck!

Personally, I really liked reading your semester review! I would love to read more stuff like it if you've got the time

The unfortunate thing is that no-one could have predicted that bio would be on the exam, in my opinion. My adviser told me that they were pushing us to study from the 2019-2020 Kaplan book, but I bought it and it was not useful to this exam. Some of the questions I ran into, I found material for but only under the HESI portion of the exam study guide. I never thought I would see some of those questions on a nursing school entrance exam, which is what is frustrating to me. I was told that one of the higher ups had taken the exam and believes that it is material they want to test on and that our pre-reqs should cover the material? However it seems as though they are getting a lot of complaints about the material so it seems a lot of students know that this material should not have been on the test in the first place, as many of us have never seen it.

NAU ABSN Fall 2019 Summary

PACE. The pace changes dramatically. We go from 100 mph in light fog to a nice 60 mph during a snow storm. What I mean is that you feel like you have more time to prep, but the material is more focused on details. And half way into the semester, you wonder when it's gonna be over lol! Overall, the pressure has subsided and you get the feeling that the program will now allow you to fail which is comforting and allows you to refine your nursing game.

Things are changing for the next cohort? There has been discussion of moving either Pharm or Fundamentals to start alongside NUR 330 (the lone summer class). This is a good thing IMO (especially if its fundaments IMO). This is meant to help you feel less helpless and may address the issue of pace change mentioned above. Nothing is set in stone, but this may be coming your way.

Tips? Stay engaged! Its 2 classes and clinicals, and one of the classes is online! Focus Med-Surg, juggle the tasks of Informatics (online), and enjoy yourself in Clinicals. You will start telling yourself by the end "I may not be perfect, but I can TOTALLY do this for a living!"
