Hey everyone. I thought I'd see if anyone else on here is applying to NAU's accelerated BSN program this application cycle. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who is!

Heh I'm glad we will get great experience in the program! How long would your clincial days last? Like 12 hour "shifts"?

I also wanted to see if anyone wanted to split a house or apartment together. Just send me a message on here if interested. I am a 26 year old female who is pretty down to earth.

Hi,

I was accepted to the program and I would be interested to split. We currently live in Buckeye, AZ and just bought a home.

No worries! Hope to meet you guys soon!

@Cpt ATP I’m not OP, but our shifts were 10 hours long until the spring when they were 12 hours. Actual time on the floor was (for me anyways) 6-7 hours per shift over summer and fall, and 10.5 hours per shift on the floor this spring. The rest of the time would be pre- or post- conference, or eating meals.

I will say, because this is something someone said to me that helped, nursing school is to a large extent more about how to pass the NCLEX than how to actually be a nurse. The clinical hours are very helpful, and you do get to practice your skills, but (unfortunately) a lot of skills are really learned when you get a job. For me anyways, this helped me focus on learning bigger picture things from clinicals, such as time management and assessment skills. I hope this helped! Sorry for hijacking @ACAZ92‘s question.

Edited to add: Hospitals know this about nursing school because it’s pretty much the same everywhere, which is why new grad programs are 3-6 months depending on what units you get hired into! You will leave this program plenty hirable and ready. ?

@periodicgeek

Thank you! This is very insightful and has grounded me a little as far as expectations!

@Cpt ATP I hope grounded does not mean disappointed. I definitely feel like I've learned a lot, and have a basic foundational understanding of how to think like a nurse. ? It's been a really fun year too! I've learned a lot and definitely made friends I would like to keep for the rest of my life.

No not at all! was calming for me. I'm very excited for the program and what it has to offer. Question to you!

Do you choose clinical placements by specialty or just hospital/setting?

@Cpt ATP

Okay so I'm not 100% sure what you are asking, but I'll do the best I can to answer. ?

From fall until the first half of spring, everyone rotates through the same clinical courses. Fundamentals of nursing and mental health are in summer; med-surg/critical care are in the fall; and labor, delivery, postpartum, and pediatrics are in the first half of spring. Capstone is the second half of spring and that is where you get to request what unit and hospital you would like to go to based on your interests. Does that answer your question? I'm sorry if it doesn't!

@periodicgeek

Very thorough! That is everything I needed and more. Thank you!

@periodicgeek

makes total sense!! My question to you is, can we request Phoenix clinical placements?

@elisa0108 for capstone yes absolutely. Otherwise, it’s pretty much all in Flagstaff except for one of the fall groups typically goes to Kingman. I did all my clinicals at the hospital in Flagstaff (FMC) and I had a great experience!
