National University Accelerated BSN

Published

Hi Everyone:

I am currently in the process of trying to get into national university's ABSN program for the fall 2009 at L.A location, anyone who has gotten into the program (both L.A and S.D) before or still in the process of applying, I would really appreciate any feedback from all of you guys about your general status (overall GPA, TEAS, etc) or your insight about this program overall. I feel like nowadays every nursing program becomes a lot more competitive than before, even for the private schools. So any feedback or comment would be very welcome from all of you guys, Thank you.

Thank you very much--you answered my question. :)

Hi Everyone!

I applied for the NU in Los Angeles and will attend the Nursing Forum Info Forum in January for the Accelerated BSN. I need to take the "Preparation for the Major" classes like Anatomy, Physiology, etc. Will I take those once I'm accepted into the program, or I'd need to complete those first? How does it work? I'd like to take them at NU since I've always been on the waitlists for the science prereqs at the community colleges here.

Also, I've just applied and haven't done the interview to get into the school yet (I just talked to an admissions person who sent me info to attend the nursing forum). How are the interviews and what do they ask?

A question about tuition: how does it come out to approx $50K? The tuition I came up with according to their website ($675 per course x 33 courses, including orientation fee) is $24K. Plus books (approx $3k... a wild guess)... what am I missing? That's a large differential...

Thanks!

You must take the sciences, biomed stats and information literacy (ILR not required if you have a previous bachelor degree) before applying. If the Nursing application deadline falls while you are in the last month of your last pre-req. and you are taking it at NU, you can submit a cover letter with your application asking to be considered for that application period. I just looked up the schedule, and it looks like there are openings for A&P1 in the next few months (as long as you are not trying to take it in San Diego) and, in my experience, the three are run successively.

I don't remember completing a formal interview for admission into the university. I do remember that my advisor said we could waive the application fee if I knew a current student who could provide me with a referral, so poke your friends and see if anyone wants to help you save a few dollars.

Good luck!

The $675 per course is actually the Clinical Course Fee and is above and beyond tuition, which is $308 per unit. I haven't worked out the total cost, but I'm sure the $50K is pretty close to correct.

It's painful to think about, ugh!

Thanks for the reply! I saw on the BSN Accelerated Post Bachelor's program that the anat, physio, etc were included in the "Preparation for the Major" National University BSN Accelerated Post-Bachelor along with the other nursing classes, etc. So I'd need to take those science classes first at a city college and then again at the University? Or how would that work?

How confusing! That page does make it appear as if the pre-requisites are part of the program. Here's a link to the pre-requisites. The accelerated post-bachelor degree is about halfway down the page, and the pre-requisites must be completed in order for your application to be considered. The rest of the classes under preparation for major that begin with NSG (except NSG 322- BioMed stats, which is a pre-requisite and must be completed prior to your application) are part of your Nursing program.

You only have to take the pre-requisites once. I believe you can take them at any WASC accredited school, but I'd double check with your advisor that they'll be accepted if you decide to do your sciences online.

Good luck!

Thank you for clarifying that! Do you know if I can take those classes at NU? I've only been able to take one science class at a city college because I'm always stuck on a waitlist :( I've applied to NU and hope I can take them there!

They offer all of the classes you'll need at NU. Since I'm assuming you'll be taking classes in Los Angeles, you should be able to get into the sciences relatively easily and you can have them knocked out in time to apply for your program by the summer!

Good luck!

Great! Do you know how long after I apply will I get a call back or email regarding if I'm accepted or not? And are the start dates year round or only in the Fall/Spring?

Oh, also, does the ABSN offer externships/clinicals at hospitals so we can get experience before we graduate?

So do new cohorts start in Summer, fall and Spring? I don't see any application deadlines on their website. Anyone know if Fresno is still doing the program? Are the classes at night? A friend of mine attended NU for her teaching credential and they were all night classes. I'm currently a teacher, but am hoping that I may be able to substitute on days that I don't have class during the day or clinical hours (if that is even possible...is it??)

Some things are a bit hard to find on the website.

Nursing start dates and application deadlines.
