Nasty M.D phone manners

What do you think of this Drs order (Verbal clarification)??

"Follow the orders you can read and don't follow the ones you can't read"

(Spoken R-E-A-L-L-Y slow like one talking to a naughty 2 yr old)

Who would you report this to?

This is the response I got when I said I couldn't read all his orders. By the way, 3 other RN's and a US couldn't read them either, not that it mattered.

How you got through that shift I don't know, but you were there for that little boy and his poor family, you really are a hero. Bless you and the nurses working with you that made it possible for you to get through...and to come back to the hospital for the next shift and the next family.

How horrible for you Brown.That was really a sad story.

I just recieved another strange order yesturday. It was a young guy in his late teens who had a saw accident and one of his thumbs had to be reinserted etc... to try to save it. Freak accident as most are. Anyhow, post op in recovery, 2 of us nurses were trying to do a neurovascular check and the surgeon said "son't bother, whatever is there is there,I can't get more anyway. Don't do checks ,I don't even want to know, just keep it warm"

Hmmmm. I did the check anyhow and charted my findings. No one can order me to "not" do a vasc check, can they?

Sharann, I would think that you would be looking for a worsening from the original baseline indicating a too tight bandage or cast or possibly an arterial graft site coming loose. Makes sense to me to do the checks just to moniter and document the process of healing, or lack thereof, and to call the MD with worsening condition, charting his response, or lack thereof.

Brownie that is terrible. I do know about the Florence Hospital's doctors. I am so sorry that happened as it did.

I wonder if there is such a thing as Verbal Assault? That certainly seemed the case. NS have the reputation at least in my area of being high and mighty God like creatures (in their own sight) and no one dares to cross them. When does it end.

Good advise from all. I remember working at a long term care psychiatric facility, and we had one of the residents pass away at about 2 in the morning and the nastiest doctor was on call. This man did anything to get out of work. I had him beeped on his pager ( he was sleeping at the facility) and proceeded to call back and hollar obsceneties at me for the first 30 seconds he was on the phone for waking him then asked what I had the nerve to wake him for . I told him the pt. had died and he needed to pronounce the pt. He proceeded to tell me to put the phone receiver to the pt.'s chest and he would do it from his bed. I told him that would be fine but I would have to ask the family members to move so I could get to the pt's chest. He wasn't long getting to the floor to do his job, and it was a sheer coincidence the family had just dissapeared. Little did he know the poor pt. had no next of kin. Too bad!

Dear P_RN,

Thank your very much for your concern and compassion. I'm sorry to hear you have run into these gods in their own minds also. I sincerely hope that one day these people get their pay back....just to let them know...there are real people around them, with feelings. Maybe I shouldn't wish that on anyone...but I think some folks deserve to get their just deserts.

What an ass... When I was a tech during nursing school, I worked on a telemetry unit. One of the NASTIEST MDs I have ever encountered threw a chart at a nurse and hit her very hard in the stomach. She was seven months pregnant. Heard through the grapevine two days later that the nurse's husband was arrested for beating the crap outta the MD in the parking garage... :) But I don't think anything ever really came of his behavior. How sad that they are allowed to treat us like this.

I don't even know where to begin in describing the many rude docs that have crossed my "professional nursing career"!

One I remember is when I worked nightshift and had to call a doc at home regarding one of his patients. The "wife" answered the tele, and then passed the phone to the doc. He immediately went on a cursing rampage over the tele, so I hung up on him.

Five minutes passed before he called back. The unit secretary gave me the phone, the doc said "This is Dr. "X". You just called me at home then hung up on me. Can you tell me why?" I said, Sure Dr. "X". I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the heck you were ranting about, so I thought I must have the wrong number since the Dr. "X" I'm familiar with wouldn't curse like that under any circumstances, especially when it comes to the care of his patients."

He apologized royally to me, then we dealt with the nature of why I had called him in the first place. Never again did I have a problem with that doc.

Another true case scenario was when a doctor told a nursing assistant to tell me to order some drug for his patient and give it to him stat. I happened to be standing at the patient server outside the patient's room charting on the patient's chart when the doc told the nursing assistant that. The NA happened to be standing about two feet or so behind me. The doc started walking down the hall with his train of medstudents behind him when I called out for him to "Hold it, Dr. "Y". He stopped and glared at me with an "evil glare" as if to say "What?" I said, if that was an order intended for me to carry out, I suggest you march right back here and tell me personally about that order if you expect it to get done. Doctors are not to give NAs orders to relay to the nurse -- that's your job, doc! He stood glaring at me over his black rim glasses, turning red (embarrassed in front of his train of medstudents, no doubt), then stormed down the hall, wrote the order in the patient's chart, then came up to me and said, "I've written a new stat order for Mr. "so and so". Would you please see to it that he gets it?" I said, "I'm right on it doc!"

Sometimes a nurse has to do what a nurse has to do to straighten out those old docs when they get "out of line" with the staff.
