Nassau Community College Spring 2015

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on applying in October for the Spring 2015 nursing program at NCC. I have a bachelors and I'm taking all of the science prerequisites that would apply for a BSN. I have a 3.8 average and I'm currently enrolled in AHS132 and Human Development. My question is since the AAS degree is mostly classes that I've taken already since I have a bachelors what would the timeframe be for me to finish the program. Also I'm debating whether or not I should even considering applying because everyone I speak to informs me that most hospitals are not hiring any associates nursing entry level RN's. Anyone who has graduated or has any input on the subject I would really appreciate it! Thanks! Oh! I also wanted to know how long it takes to register for the TEAS and if there is anyway to prep or study for them? Thank guys!!& Good Luck to anyone applying this year!!

It will still take you the same amount of time because you can only take one nursing course per semester. The only way you can shorten it is if you are an LPN and do the bridge program which knocks off NUR101. You still may need to take another class or two, depending on how they pick apart your transcript. Have you sent your transcript in yet? I have an associates degree already and I'm also a LpN and they still wanted another 7 credits done at Nassau to fulfill their requirements to be able to give an associates. If you have a bachelors degree already have you considered stonybrook's accelerated program? It'll grant you another bachelors degree. But I don't think financial aid covers another bachelors. It is true that most facilities won't hire ADN RNs, maybe if you have LPN experience? Friends of mine who were LPN's graduated from am RN program with their associates and were able to get jobs at hospitals but it was because they had experience as an LPN and they had to be enrolled in a bachelors degree program at the time of hire. I'm sorry but I don't have any info on TEAS, I didn't have to take them.

I also applied to NCC for Spring 2015 and just finished sending all my transcripts. I got an 81 on the TEAS and my GPA for the pre-reqs is 3.75. My fingers are crossed I get in. I also applied to SUNY Farmingdale for the same semester; they too require the TEAS and I think the same pre-reqs. The only difference is Farmingdale is a 3 year BSN program as opposed to NCC's 2 year ADN program, but from what I understand NCC has a bridge program for another year to get a BSN. I already have a BS from SUNY Purchase in bio and would prefer the BSN over the ADN.

I also heard the same thing that hospitals aren't hiring nurses with ADN, but I think that NCC has a bridge program for another year to receive a BSN. As for the TEAS, you can register online through atitesting.com for tests given this month. Once you register for the site, it'll take 5 mins. I bought the ATI Study Pack through their website and studied for about a month and a half and got an 81. I looked at other review books, but this one was the best and had the exact format of the test. Hope this helps and good luck!

The time frame would be the same, as someone mentioned. You take the nursing classes in order (since they build on each other), so you can't shorten the time it takes, no matter what other courses you come in with.

Well, that is what they say. It is very difficult to get a job with an ADN, and many hospitals will explicitly state in their job descriptions that a BSN is strongly preferred, or required, to apply. However there are ways around that. The best way that I've seen is to already be an employee at the hospital in some capacity. I personally know 3 people at the hospital I work at that were PCAs and were able to be hired as RNs at our hospital, with ADNs, because they already worked there. They also immediately enrolled in an RN-BSN program upon graduation with the ADN/passing the NCLEX.

I actually asked this very question at an info session at NCC, and the chair said that it's true, and while some go to non-hospital jobs to start, others go into RN-BSN programs immediately. Nassau has a bunch of linkages with those kinds of programs listed on the website. I personally was accepted to Nassau for this current semester, but opted for a BSN for this reason. However, that's just me, and I think that there are ways to still get a great, low cost education at NCC and find a job after if that's what works for you. You should also be flexible as to location, since while NYC hospitals may prefer BSNs, other hospitals in other areas readily welcome ADNs.

It doesn't take too long. I used the official ATI TEAS study guide, and a couple other resources (like Basic Math Review for Nurses, the McGraw-Hill 5 Practice TEAS Tests, and TEAS Secrets), but you absolutely MUST get the official guide, if anything.

You can send in your application/transcripts since the summer, it isn't restricted to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th week of Oct. The deadline for all transcripts and application is the last Friday of this October.

As long as you have all your pre reqs done you can apply online. Just give them all the information they ask for. It's pretty easy to apply.

If you are already a Nassau student (including non-degree, which I was), the change of program form is only available in October (and that would be the only time they accept it). If you're applying from outside Nassau, then I guess you can apply now through the admissions office, but they won't review it until after the deadline (after the end of October). I suggest you attend an information session (dates are on the website), since they explain everything you want to know, including how to apply.

When I went in to the nursing office to fill out the change of program form (you also bring unofficial copies of your transcripts, the Registrar can print that out for you, including any transfer transcripts you submitted), they checked to see if they received my TEAS scores, and they didn't have it (even though I requested it to be sent like 2 months before). Luckily, I brought my own print out of the TEAS transcript, which they accepted.

What school did you pick over Nassau?

I go to the College of New Rochelle. I picked it because it's a BSN, and I'm in my late 20s and just want to be done with school, haha. If I was younger I would've just gone to Nassau and done RN-BSN after. It sounds like a great, rigorous program, nice facilities, etc.
