Nassau Community College Nursing Program

Published

Has anyone ever gotten into the Nassau Community College nursing program with all of their pre class done except for A&P 2 and medical microbiology? I have everthing expect for those 2 and i was wondering what my chances were of getting in on the first try.

Hope you don't mind -- but I need some assurance/advice. My GPA is 3.75. I'm on my last basic pre-req (MAT 100) -- I've kept it till last because I'm not a great math student. I'm waiting on my mid-term grade. This is the only College of the Air (online NCC course) I've taken. I did it this way for 2 reasons -- 1. sometimes I'm better off learning the math on my own. If I don't get the right prof. sometimes I get more confused. 2. I also am getting my CNA certification to enable me to work also, this allowed me to attend my CNA classes, and still do the math. I'm married -- 2 little kids, etc.

My question is this: I'm nervous as can be because I really think I did poorly on my mid-term. Still waiting on the grade. Did you ever have a class that you didn't do so great on while doing your pre-reqs? I can't figure out how GPA's are calculated. I'm wondering if I get a "C" in this class how much my GPA will be affected. I am working my tush off to try to stay in the 3.7 range. Of course, I'm reaching for the 4.0. (I'm really not as dumb as I sound -- but my nerves often overide my ability to come off even slightly sane!!)

Hope you don't mind such a personal question, but if you can share advice I would appreciate it greatly!

Hi, I was accepted into Nassau's nursing program ( framed my acceptance letter).

1. Complete all pre- recs first. Complete your A+P and Micro. Nursing school is tough... you can do it!!

2. Must have GPA of at least 3.85. Applicants are choosen with the highest GPA first ..4.0 on down

I already have B.A degree. For me it was better to go to Molly. For the same amount of time (2- 2 1/2 yrs) I received my BSN. good luck

the best of luck to you. nursing school is tough!!! consumes ALL your time. I just pass my boards a few months ago. you can do this girl!!! I took A+P in the summer. We had a blast. I had Dr. Finlay for medical micro, love her good luck!

As for this question I think it doesnt matter if you do not complete all pre reqs! As I was entering the program I was in the classes A & P2 Psych 203. I was able to get in even though those classes were not complete.. I ended up getting a B in A& P 2 and it dragged my GPA down. I know plenty of people who got into the program without all the pre reqs and ONLY A 3.7 GPA. The nursing program does take up a lot of time but you also get the summers off to complete all the classes! ALWAYS apply anyhow! Like I said I believe that the science classes are 10x easier in the summer because you go 4x a week and its drilled into your brain instead of 4 months.

Thanks for all the replys. I just got news today that i was accepted in the spring 09 nursing program. :yeah:

Congratulations To You!!! Incredible!!! Best Of Luck!!!!

I need some advice, from anyone who is willing to give!!

I applied to the NCC nursing program for the January 09 semester. I had all of my pre-req's and all but one of the other required courses, which I took Fall 2009 semester (A&P 2, Child Development). I just finished up classes and I believe I got a B+ in A&P and an A in Child Development.

My pre-req grades were:

PSY: A

AP1: B+

Eng: A

Mat: B

Soc: B+

I already have an AA so I have a plethora of electives in which I received all A's in. So now I didn't get into the January program, I already have all the classes except Micro which I plan to take in the summer and I just completed child development this semester. Since I don't have anymore classes to take, I have no idea what to do next semester. I applied to Farmingdale and SCCC for the Fall 2009 semester, but still want to attend NCC nest semester for at least 1 class so I can just apply as a change of program student in March (easier that way.)

So I don't know, do I try and re-take a class like Soc for a better grade? Do I just hope the applicant pool next time around isn't as good? My grades aren't BAD, they're just not PHENOMENAL which you need really to get in. I wish the nursing department could give students like pointers on what to do instead of just a flat out rejection :( The last month of school was so hard having to go in and listen to people talk about how they got in and what hospitals they would be at :(

Anyways.. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone is enjoying there start of vacation!

Your grades are not BAD...It's actually better than mine..hehe...and I got accepted at St. Vincent's in Queens, so don't be sad...If it will interest you, SVCMC is accepting applications for the Fall semester...deadline is Feb 20 and they accept on a rolling basis so if you send in your application early, you stand a higher chance in being accepted.

Also do great on your NLN-PAX RN exam for Farmingdale. I spoke to an Admissions Counselor there and he told me I'm on the waiting list for Fall 09 pending my A&P 2 and Microbio grade. I already took the NLN last year and I applied to the LPN program that starts on January. The counselor called me up to offer me seat for the LPN program, but told me he'd rather put me in the RN program. So I'm waiting on that. If that pushes through then I have an option to stay in LI and not do the 30 to 45 min drive to Queens.

Apply apply and apply. Do not be afraid to be persistent. And never ever be discouraged.

I'm taking Chemistry and Public Speaking in the Spring while waiting for the Fall semester to come. Just thought I'd knock out some classes towards a BSN in the future.

Good luck and God bless

I just wanted to clarify something I read in this thread. A previous poster mentioned that you HAD to have a 3.85+ to be considered. This is not entirely true. I'm a 204 student currently, and although I had a 3.89 when I was accepted, I know students currently in 204 with me who were accepted with 3.6ish GPAs. So, if you're not in the 3.8 range, don't give up. It all depends on the applicant pool each semester since NCC has no waiting lists. If you don't get in the first time, apply again!

Thanks for the info. I have a 3.80 and will be applying to the day program for the Fall. I am cautiously optimistic, but all I hear is 4.0........ I spoke to an advisor (I'm an adult student -- really "adult" :) over 35, under 50. The advisor said just what you said, 3.6 has been a number that has been accepted, depending on the applicant pool. Good luck to you!
