I knew that MSKCC was a great hospital but I surely did not know that they offered subsidize housing. Wow that is great and I cant believe they pay half of the cost. I know NYU also offers housing at a reduce rate but they definitely dont pay half. Does that come out of your check at all. I so desperately want to work there. I applied but have not gotton a response as yet so I guess I'll wait until I take the NCLEX to apply again:o.

i actually was just told the other day that the rent comes out of your check.

don't be discouraged by the non response...i think they hire in cycles. they started orientation for new nurses when i started the extern program back in may and my friend (who is interning as well) just saw her friend who took the nclex a few weeks back starting his orientation this week.

i really want to work at mskcc after i graduate but if i don't get it right after college i have a plan b....i'll probably work at ny pres or lennox for a year or so then apply to mskcc again if i don't get it the first time around.

$29.00 Base pay in Yuma, AZ

Despite the advertising and news reports that say this....it's not true. I just got back from YRMC and base pay is 24.00

Thanks Mllogy for the encouragement. I had a interview with NYP-Columbia the Nurse Manager stated she was interested in me but she needed me to have a license first. What I have notice about MSKCC is that they usually pull there new grads from the internship pool. You guys get first dibs so I would not worry if I was you I know people who interned there and are already working.

i am currently interning at sloan kettering for the summer (i'm going into my senior year of nursing school). the hospital is unbelievable!

what i noticed about ny hospitals: to differentiate the good from the bad...find out how long the nurses have been at the hospital. it seems mskcc takes care of their nurses. most of the nurses here have put in years (20+) these nurses are making well over 100k.

for 2007 new grads started at 70k. next year, i heard it will be raised to 72 o 74k. their reason: "we want to stay competitive"

i asked why the hospital isn't unionized and almost all the nurses have said, "the hospital takes care of their nurses."

the do have a pension plan and you become fully vested after 5 years.

their benefits are top of the line: 20 sicks days, etc

the biggest upside is that mskcc is a teaching hospital. most of the nurses are the nicest you'll ever meet (you meet the mean ones too)

they also subsidize housing...so they will pay half your rent in the buildings they own. the set up of these apartments are beautiful...doormen and everything.

i asked about cornell and it seems the nurses go back and fourth. i haven't heard a lot of great things about cornell. it seems mskcc and cornell compete a lot but mskcc by far seems to be winning the battle.

i am considering both when i graduate but my experience has only been at mskcc so obviously this is my first choice.

i wonder how much mskcc's plan pays...i did a rough calculation of the nysna plan at methodist (which lets you keep your pension if you work among any of the nysna-represented hospitals in the area (about 25 or more places, i think)...after about 25 years of working--and assuming current pay rates--it seems the annual pension could be at the minimum about $25,000---$30,000/year (and perhaps much more--the plan's specifics are on the nysna webste)---i've heard on this website that sloan-kettering's plan may not pay as much????? but their starting salary of $70k beats methodist's about $67k (assuming you receive the $1,750 bonus for having a bsn; also, the contract automatically adds 3% next march).. we also pay zero for health, dental, prescription benefits for us and our families.

I haven't started clinicals, which is why I don't know much about hospitals, units, ect. So I am sorry if this is a silly question. I tried to find this out on my own by checking out their website. Does

MSKCC have a med/surg unit? And if so, would a nurse get the same experience that she would if she worked at a non specialty hospital's med/surg unit?

hi! i recently passed my NCLEX. i'm planning to apply at isabella geriatric center.any feedback pls...thanks

This is such a good thread, glad I found it. Do any NYC hospitals offer sign on/relocation bonuses?? And how difficult is it to get into subsidized housing for the ones that offer it?

I dont think the NY Hospitals offer a sign on/relocation bonuses....I asked when I interviewed at a few hospitals and I was flat out told NO. But you can try...definitely ask!

Also, I work for a hospital with housing and there is a waiting list. I have been on mine for 8 months. I am in the mean time paying off debt and bills, so its ok at the moment. However, some hospitals have long waiting lists.

I notice that most hospitals have a waiting list for an apartment. Does anyone know how ong the list is generally and how long one would have to wait. Wow 8 months is awhile JennaRN1006. Hang in there Im sure it will come through. Also do the hospital go through the standard credit check and everything else it takes to get an apartment in nyc. My credit is shot at this point. So many bills, not that much money at this. Taken nclex next month that is my night in shinning armor

Thanks for the info...too bad about no sign on bonuses. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to maneuver myself from New Orleans to New York without going broke. (besides I am in school and broke already) Looks like a travel assignment may be the best bet to make the initial move.

Good luck
