This is my second day in the nursing program and already we have our first test on Friday. The test is over 350 medical terms. Next week we start Intro to Nursing and that test is like 3 days after the class starts.
Im not complaining. I mean this is made to be tough and fast so we can be good trained nurses. It'll all be worth it in the end. It's only one year of sacrifice.
Anyway my first day started in my computer course for 4 hours. Every hour we would get a break and could grab a snack or a drink. I'm trying to stay healthy so I'm munching on granola bars and water. For lunch I even had a ham and cheese sandwhich. But, I digress....haha. The computer course is pretty basic. The things we already know but they want us to be sure how to send our assignments and check our emails for class. Just to jogg our memories I suppose.
Next I headed off to Med Term. We sat and watched a video that repeated every term over and over for the next 4 hours of my school day. It actually kind of worked. I went home and could remember some of the visuals that the video had in it, so i remembered the terms! That's when she broke the news....test Friday for 350 words. I guess it's not that bad..but 350 words!!!!!!!! Ahh!
Well I'm in computer class right now so I should pay attention...I'll update later.
Well so far so good. Ive passed my check offs on ngt, cath, and more. We have dummies to practice and do our check off's on so we don't do it on each other if anyone was wondering. Right now I have made it to phase 5! I am uber excited because we start clinicals in April and it's not to far from now! I'm not able to update as much as I would like due to all this studying but I have joined a study group and it helps! I'm not a study group person so I just asked two other girls to study with me who are quiet like me ( you dont want a loud talkative group or you won't get any studying done...). well ask me questions!!!! I wanna answer you guys!

hello ladies, i was just reading this thread and you all have given me inspiration as well as fear. :)
i haven't take the entrance exam yet (april) but i thought i would get as much information as i could online. i live in new jersey and the program i am applying for is evening (20 month). it will be tough cause its weeknights from 5:30-10 and i still work full time during the day. **that is if i get in** sometimes i wonder how i will ever pull it off. look forward to talking to all of you in the near future!!! xoxoxo
My program is 12 months long.
What you can do to get a leg up?...I would get a nursing math made incredibly easy book and start looking through fractions and decimals if you have been out of school awhile. I have been in college since highschool but it's been since 9th grade that I've done fractions. I wish someone had told me to study up on my math. One thing someone told me that really helped was to get a med surg book and just look thorugh it...if you want go to the bookstore and look through a nursing fundamentals book to get used to the terms. I did and it helped. I wasn't clueless when we started. Also...once class starts look into med term on studystack.com....it'll help you get into disecting everything you'll hear in class. And don't..don't waste your money on those nclex pn books yet. it'll get you confused if you havent learned your basics yet....I mean if you don't know your nursing processes you can't determine nursing diagnosis yet so don't even try with those study books. I know you wanna stress out over the nclex as soon as possible but trust me you'll have enough to worry about so buy them when you get into clinical settings to help test yourself on what you have learned. And another thing...if your school does ATI testing...study the books that come with it. They help. They are like mini nclex studyguides themselves.
Hope I helped...

don't worry! I may make it sound hard on here because I am typically wrapping up days into one so you guys can get an idea of everything..don't get me wrong this is the hardest thing I have gotten myself into in awhile. But it's all about how you go about it. I study whenever I can. I make time to rest and leisure whenever I'm not studying (let's face it...stress makes your grades suffer so you don't want to overstudy..plus nursing school friends are fun!!) It's hard and it's fast paced. Like my insturctor says "its fast and furious!" but they don't want you to fail and neither do your classmates. They are all there for you! It is time consuming because when I am not working I have to make time to study or thats it. You have to study. Point blank. If you don't it'll be horrible and hard they way it sounds on here....if you do...it will be a breeze and you'll love going to class everyday like I do!
Good luck with applying and please let me know how it goes!

The bad thing about LPN school is the amount of material you are forced to absorb in one sitting....I don't know how you 3-11pm people can manage to keep your grades up. I ended up studying 5-6 hrs a night and giving up my job. the first trimester is the worst. It was known as the "weeding out" trimester at our school. Good luck.
