My Year of Lpn School

Published

This is my second day in the nursing program and already we have our first test on Friday. The test is over 350 medical terms. Next week we start Intro to Nursing and that test is like 3 days after the class starts.

Im not complaining. I mean this is made to be tough and fast so we can be good trained nurses. It'll all be worth it in the end. It's only one year of sacrifice.

Anyway my first day started in my computer course for 4 hours. Every hour we would get a break and could grab a snack or a drink. I'm trying to stay healthy so I'm munching on granola bars and water. For lunch I even had a ham and cheese sandwhich. But, I digress....haha. The computer course is pretty basic. The things we already know but they want us to be sure how to send our assignments and check our emails for class. Just to jogg our memories I suppose.

Next I headed off to Med Term. We sat and watched a video that repeated every term over and over for the next 4 hours of my school day. It actually kind of worked. I went home and could remember some of the visuals that the video had in it, so i remembered the terms! That's when she broke the news....test Friday for 350 words. I guess it's not that bad..but 350 words!!!!!!!! Ahh!

Well I'm in computer class right now so I should pay attention...I'll update later.

Good luck! I just passed the halfway point and I can't believe we've made it this far already, it seems like we just started!

Today we got another batch of the 350 words. So far everyone is in the same boat as me. We're all feeling overwelmed by the amount of material we have to cover but we're all going to pass this test! I come home and study for at least 3 hours yesterday and tonight. I try to take a break every hour to retain information. I also rewrite the words over and over and say the words out loud again and again. The instructor is really nice and helpful so hopefully I'm on the right track.

In our computer class we went over a few more things typically focusing on wordperfect and email. Like I said it's kind of basic but I did find out a few tips I didn't know before. Good thing about this class is...grades based soley on attendance!!! No test!

Well I'm going to study some more.

Keep us updated I am starting in less than two weeks and it is every day from 7-3 and I have a full time job from 330 to 11 so I am getting worried! I want to know what LPN school entails and every tip you can give! EVERY TIP will help!

Hang in ther NursingLadyQuinn. I'm almost finished with my second week and we have had 6 tests and multiple, multiple quizes. We have 2 more tests tomorrow. I can't say that it gets any easier but it will all be worth it in the end. Lets keep up the hard work. Good Luck!!

I can say after 5 months into the program that in my opinion the first 10 weeks are the hardest..

It goes sooooooooo fast, and there is soooooooo much info to digest.

However, everything builds on everything else, so there is alot of repeating.....

So have no fear, if you don't quite get the hang of the integumentary system in A&P, you will have another chance in Gerontology...:p

Or if you don't quite understand all the antipsychotic drugs in Pharmacology, you will hear about them all again in Mental Health, and Phych.

Point being, Stay on top of your studies, but if you are not quite getting something and think that it is moving to fast and you will never "get" it all... Just feel secure in knowing that chances are very good that you will be covering it again soon......... Then its like EUREKA!

Good Luck to you

Thanks for all the support you guys!! Yeah our instructors said everything builds on everything else we learn.

Well remember that big test I mentioned.....I GOT AN 94%!!!:dances::

This week has been nothing but med term words and computer class...I got an 100% in pc class. I got a 95% in med terminology today! And a good tip for med term is to study before your program even starts if you can...try buying a small med term dictionary and just reading over the terms. Trust me it helps!

Another thing I did was a buy a med/ surg book to look over some diseases so I won't be soo out of the loop when nursing foundations starts. And a nclex-pn study guide to help with those test questions!!!

Today we took our test and started Nursing Intro course. Alot of Florance Nightingale and her friends lol. It's pretty interesting to learn about holistic nursing and treating patients as a whole. Everything went great today but were off Monday for the holiday and we have a test Tuesday over the chapters we covered today! And we have another day of chapters on Wednesday and Thursday another test then off Friday as our free break day....then guess what? Another test on that following Monday...our final. Then the course is over and we start Foundations in nursing. I'm really ready for that class. It's where were we learn how to nurse and we start labs and procedures!!! We get to practice on each other.

The worst thing about the first few weeks are that is we don't make an 82% in class we get dropped automatically. Everyone passed med term and comp so far were a strong class! I just can't wait till we all walk down that stage and get pinned at graduation....because we will!

Oh allyb you and I are in the same boat. I start my LPN program tomorrow (YAY!) and it runs M-F from 8-2:30 pm. Then I rush off to work from 3-11:30 pm. I am still in training and once I complete it, I have the option of working weekends... but for now, I am just worried that I won't have enough time during the week to study.

Oh good!!! We will have to keep each other motivated because I am the worlds worst at being motivated to study! Where are you going to school at? I wonder if it will be the same? I have soo many questions! Well good luck let me know how the first day went!

This is my second week of school and today was my second test. Its was the first quiz for Intro to Nursing and I made an 97%. I only missed one question. Now we seem to be getting into the nitty gritty and its pretty fun. All the nursing ethics and law. Our instructor said we should get student insurance but I'm not sure if I will but most likely I will go ahead and get it to cover me in case anything happens during clinicals.

Yesterday I did my volunteer work assignment at a local nursing home near my house. It was really fun. I was placed on the alzheimers unit with an LPN. I watched her do med pass and chart, and I got to help her keep the clients in line. They were all so busy and going all around. She explained to me about sundowners and that they are always this busy especially when it's time for bed. Haha. I think I could work at a nursing home but well see...

Well I have alot to study because I have another test the day after tomorrow on 8 chapters!!

Keep your head up, and have fun at school to you guys just starting this week.

Ok. Sorry I havent been on this week but I've been ultra busy. This post will be short untill I can make it back to do a really good post! So far we have started Nursing Fundamentals and were learning the basics: bed baths, shampoos, shaving, body mechanics, linnen change. Typically all the CNA coursework. They say after this first semester all of us will qualify to be a CNA. Things have been fun. I was the first person to do my bed bath/linnen change check off yesterday. I passed! We also got checked off on vital signs: temp, blood pressure, pulse, and respirations. Then came the restraints! I passed on all of that too! I was so happy to get it over though and glad I went first. Well I have to go.
