Hi guys.. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me and give some information. Before you reply yes I know how terrible it is to go to an unaccredited school. Before applying to my school I had been lied to about it being accredited by a couple advisers and at the time I was not knowledgeable enough about what accreditation truly means nor did I have anyone to guide me. Either way I am graduating in may with an ASN degree and will be able to sit for NCLEX have my RN license and need options.. I know most hospitals won't hire you if you come from an unaccredited school. What should I do? I have also been looking into schools I can transfer to that will accept me so I can graduate with a BSN from an actually accredited school. Does anyone have similar experience? Also does anyone know schools I can transfer to that would take me in South FL or NJ-NYC area?? Please help!

You should be fine.

Hospitals and employers usually don't care much about whether your program was accredited. They care about you possessing an RN license.

If you're eligible for NCLEX, take it, pass, get a job. No sweat.

Then apply for BSN programs. There are plenty of BSN programs that don't require an accredited RN program. Including .

I'm from/was educated in NY and moved to FL where I hold a license. My advice to you is to stay in FL for your BSN. Educational requirements in NY are way more intense and you will run into far more issues getting into a BSN program with an unaccredited ASN there.

Thank you, I was looking into Hunter Beuvelles School of nursing.. I heard they take students from unaccredited programs but I'm not sure how hard it is to get in. Have you heard of it? and okay I was thinking of doing that as well. You think if i obtain a BSN here in FL I would have any problems getting a job in NY?

I actually have a non-nursing degree from Hunter College. Their nursing program is very very hard to get into. Their program is very affordable, so they often have a huge pool of applicants to choose from. The job market in NYC is very tight for new grads, but if you worked with your ASN in Florida while obtaining your BSN you wouldn't have too much trouble finding a job.

I think there is a lot of confusion between accreditation and BON approval.

BON approval of a program is what will allow you to be eligible for NCLEX.

Accreditation is a 100% voluntary process that is granted by ACEN or CCNE. However, there are grad schools that will not accept graduates of an unaccredited program for further studies. In some areas where there is an excess of new grad nurses, some employers are requiring graduation from an accredited program. So while graduates of an unaccredited program can take NCLEX and get a license, the job search may be more difficult.

My community college was not accredited by NLN (that was the one they wanted at that time) but it WAS accredited by my state and the BON for my state and I was certain;y eligible to take the NCLEX. No one cared when I got my first job and then moved up my current dream job at a large teaching hosp. It a;so did not affect me being able to transfer into a BSN program within my state's university system or my ability to enter an MSN program.

As long as the school/program is in an accredited school you are fine.

that makes me feel better... thank you. The school I go to itself is accredited while the program is not they are however trying to get ACEN but I believe this would most likely happen after i graduate... It could take years. I hope I will find luck in getting a job with out a problem... What state are you from?
