My first day as an RN

Hello Allnurses!

Today is the day I have been working towards for a very long time. I graduated in May, took my NCLEX August 23rd, got my license in the mail and my hospital offered me an RN position. So I have been a CNA for 4 years, a nurse tech for the last year and three months, and man, today I get to nurse. I have an excellent nurse to work with who graciously offered to proctor me and I love the surgical floor I work on. I have met some great people here and am looking forward to the next year. Hope my positive vibes help some others out there with first day jitters! :)

Awesome post! I hope you're having a great day. Keep up the positive attitude! :)

Have a wonderful first day!! I'm glad you have a proctor you know and trust, am sure with that great attitude you'll have plenty of help from your fellow nurses and will shine.

When you come home tired, remember to write down all the good things you did today, the things you were taught and able to recall, the skills you got!! And if your frustrated, write down one thing to work on this week. Just one.... and then next week or next month, see how you have that thing mastered. Some times we get overwhelmed, but writing dow the positives each day... you slowly see more of them and when the need to work on's became positives. It can give you perspective in a month, 3 months, 6 months... to see how far you've come, not just where you need to go.

Welcome, friend and fellow nurse!

It was a great first day. It was like putting on my clinical hat and doing in-depth patient assessments in school all over again :) We have switched from McKesson to Cerner so I need to go to orientation for that as I only got CNA training on Cerner but with my first few days shadowing, it isn't too bad!
