MUSC BSN FALL 2014

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey! Just wondering if anyone out there has applied for the MUSC BSN Program for Fall 2014??? I plan on applying this December so just want to know if any other applicants are out there or if anyone knows any tips that you could provide for getting in :) thanks in advance!!!

Perfect! Thank you!

Alright, I am not sure how many priority applicants are accepted- from what I have read, they have 10-12 priority and maybe 5-6(?) are accepted, but the rest of priority applicants are rolled over for regular admission consideration- so who knows if they get in during the second round.

The Fall 2013 cohort had over 400 applicants for regular admission (or so rumor has it). From reading the other threads about MUSC, it seems that the Fall start is more popular (re: more applicants) than the Spring.

All of my information is based off what I have read in other threads, so don't take it to heart because what other people have posted *may* be inaccurate.

My essay was tough, I only got 3 sentences in before I hit 100 words. I focused on the diversity of the nursing profession and the diversity of patient care. Then I hit 100 words, haha. It is very difficult to be so short and concise with that question, but perhaps that's the goal and they're looking for applicants that can be as direct as possible without fluffing up their answer with seemingly trivial additions.

Good luck to you.. you have plenty of time to write, and re-write your essay! No mail today from MUSC, if any of y'all are following my plight. ;)

I have been emailing with an admissions person and this is what she told me...

"Grades are 75% of the overall admission decision-making. We also give value-added points for related work or volunteer experience, references, and your response to a short essay. The GPA is calculated three ways. The overall cumulative GPA, the prerequisite GPA, and the science GPA. Right now, the science GPA is weighted the heaviest. The science GPA is Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology, and the science elective. Currently, this is weighted 35%. The overall is all attempts at all coursework at all institutions, the 60 is the prerequisites only. "

This was in April so I am not sure if this is less current then what randib07 posted above!

@ml52789, Would you mind posting your stats? sorry if you already have! also, for the essay I was thinking about using where I come from small town and some experiences from my past that would contribute to the nursing profession and how it helps me deal with diverse patients..would it be better to stay along your lines of focusing on what the diversity in the nursing profession is/importance and how it affects the patients and the diversity of our patience?

Thanks for all your help!!

I have posted them, but I know it's a pain sometimes to search through threads for them :)

4.0 prerequisite

4.0 science

I did not get in last time I applied; when I talked to an admissions specialist about it, she said I have great references, scored full points on my essay, but since I had no volunteer and/or related work experience, it really hurt my score.

So, now I have 115+ hours of volunteering split between a hospital and hospice setting in addition to what I have above. I also will e considered in state as opposed to out of state, which they have less slots for.

I am hoping against hope that I get in this time; I want this so badly! Especially after all this experience I've gotten with patients through volunteering.

Good luck in your admissions process!

Thanks for posting those again! and WOW! your stats are really good...

mine are quite a bit lower but im hoping my references, essay, and work experience as a CNA and a volunteer a hospice will help...

I am out of state though so WHO KNOWS!?

I will be keeping up with you and if you get in or not!!

Good luck!

One more question for whoever knows!

For your resume, how did you set up the volunteer section...like I don't quite understand what they mean by type of experience

Thanks!

Thanks- I bet your work as a CNA will hold much more weight, in addition to your volunteering! I am getting very antsy about receiving their admissions decision.. they have until Sept 30th to send it out, but the regular deadline (for spring) is this Sunday, and I'm freaking out wondering if I should email them and ask to update my resume in the event that I do not get in through priority and am rolled over to regular admissions!

For the volunteer section I put the location/facility, description of my duties, time period I volunteered there, hours, and contact person. Basically they want related volunteer experience... if you volunteered at an animal shelter, they probably don't want to see that.

If you get in or don't get in do you mind if I pm you my essay and see what you think (reminder im applying for the Fall 2014 addmission) and I think you will get in! if the only thing they said you need to change is volunteer work then your in, if not priority for sure in regular! Also, do you know if our references count for anything or do you think they are just used if they have a handful of people they can't decide between?

ml52789 Let us know when you hear something! I am sure you will make it in this time. Does anyone know how long it takes to find out if you are accepted for priority admission? I applied for fall 2014, and the website says that I should know by Dec 30! That seems like an awfully long time considering priority apps are due by Nov. 15th...Also, I have been following my app status on their website, and they have received all of my materials, but under the pre-requ catagory, it STILL says 'being evaluated.' It has said that for almost a month now! UUUGGGHHH the waiting is killing me!

Mamagui- dec 30 is a long time to wait!!

They said I should hear by sept 30 for my priority application and the deadline was aug 15. I'm hoping its sooner than that!

ml52789, I am not sure if you would know or not but when I took my science elective and stats classes I got C's in both of them. They are really weighing down my pre req gpa. do you think I should retake the classes? I am 98% sure I won't get in for Fall 2014 so I am just planning on applying to get feedback from the admissions office. I pretty much have A's in every other class with the exception of a couple of B's in elective classes. Also, I will not have 15 social science credits and 17 elective credits...I will have 14 social science and 18 elective. Do any of you know if that matters?

Also, Maxwelsh I got that scoring information on 28 August. I think they are constantly changing stuff! That lady told you 35% this lady told me 20% for science. lol
