Nursing Schools for 3.0 GPA range
Hello, I am in the long struggle of applying for nursing schools. I currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, prerequisite GPA of 3.3 and science GPA of 3.03. I am a CNA and currently work in a hospital and I also have volunteer experience in hospice. I am having a hard time finding a school that will accept me with a GPA of only 3.0. I have a lot of credits so trying to raise it could take years!!!!!!! If anyone has any advice or schools that I might be competitive for please let me know! Thanks!

MUSC BSN FALL 2014
If you get in or don't get in do you mind if I pm you my essay and see what you think (reminder im applying for the Fall 2014 addmission) and I think you will get in! if the only thing they said you need to change is volunteer work then your in, if not priority for sure in regular! Also, do you know if our references count for anything or do you think they are just used if they have a handful of people they can't decide between?

One more question for whoever knows! For your resume, how did you set up the volunteer section...like I don't quite understand what they mean by type of experience Thanks!

Thanks for posting those again! and WOW! your stats are really good... mine are quite a bit lower but im hoping my references, essay, and work experience as a CNA and a volunteer a hospice will help... I am out of state though so WHO KNOWS!? I will be keeping up with you and if you get in or not!! Good luck!

MUSC BSN FALL 2014
I have been emailing with an admissions person and this is what she told me... "Grades are 75% of the overall admission decision-making. We also give value-added points for related work or volunteer experience, references, and your response to a short essay. The GPA is calculated three ways. The overall cumulative GPA, the prerequisite GPA, and the science GPA. Right now, the science GPA is weighted the heaviest. The science GPA is Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology, and the science elective. Currently, this is weighted 35%. The overall is all attempts at all coursework at all institutions, the 60 is the prerequisites only. " This was in April so I am not sure if this is less current then what randib07 posted above! @ml52789, Would you mind posting your stats? sorry if you already have! also, for the essay I was thinking about using where I come from small town and some experiences from my past that would contribute to the nursing profession and how it helps me deal with diverse patients..would it be better to stay along your lines of focusing on what the diversity in the nursing profession is/importance and how it affects the patients and the diversity of our patience? Thanks for all your help!!

MUSC BSN FALL 2014
That is a very good question, I think anything is better then nothing, but the closer you can get to like a CNA would be best since we do a lot of the things that nursing students do in there first semester. But I think any volunteer work or job experience working with people is going to help!

MUSC BSN FALL 2014
@randib07, So volunteering is better then CNA? I can try and start volunteering now, but I would only have about 40 hours or so by the time I apply.. I really want to get into the Fall 2014 program!! I know its not the end of the world if I don't and ill obvious keep trying but this is the goal so I am trying to do what is needed to get there! I have done 2 job shadows in the area at different hospitals and have done about 100 hours or so in volunteering but not volunteering at a hospital. Also, references, I was going to use my nurse manager at work, my manager at cracker barrel, and the director of a camp I took at class/volunteered at..Would those be good references?

MUSC BSN FALL 2014
Hello everyone! I will be applying to MUSC in December for the Fall 2014 program. I have no volunteer hours BUT I am a CNA and have a job at a hospital as a CNA and safety sitter and log anywhere from 24-40 hours a week so by the time I apply I will be around 500 or so hours there. I am taking 3 out of the 4 pre-rec classes this Fall that is why I am waiting till december to apply. Also, I am out of state.. My cum. GPA is about a 3.1 due to a failed course. Im not sure what my pre-rec or science GPA will be since I am still taking those classes. Any hints on what I can do to improve my chances? I know my GPA isn't ideal.. but I am so passionate and determined to do this I could use all the helpful tips I can get!! Also, if there are similar schools I should be applying to? Here in MI there is a waitlist or you have to gave a 3.86 GPA minimum...Thanks everyone!!
