Hey, y’all!
My name is Garrett, and I was informed this week that I was accepted into MUSCs ABSN program for Fall 2020! I found myself on this blog and saw that no one had created a thread for the incoming fall 2020 semester, so I thought I would make one lol.
I am coming from NC with a BS in Public Health from UNCW. Looking forward to getting to meet everyone!
I thought I would answer some questions for ya'll.... someone noted a difference in fall and Spring prices - that is because if you accept student insurance fall does not include the "Summer" semester insurance and "Spring" semester does. The tuition is based on number of credit hours + your insurance basically.
I also saw someone else post something in regards to sim lab... unless they are doing something new - you can't get into sim lab on your own. It has to be class sponsored and they are super stingy about hours down there because they are "expensive".
Got questions - send em my way. Things change every semester so I may not know the answer - but I can certainly do my best.
Good Luck ya'll. Rest now while you can...
Hey all! I have a question regarding parking/driving to campus. As I try to figure out housing, I was hoping to find a place downtown so I could walk to campus, but that is showing to be a little bit challenging. I am now more open to finding a place in West Ashley, Mt Pleasant, James Island, etc., however I am worried about driving/parking to campus. I was wondering if there are parking passes to purchase, how competitive parking is, and how expensive parking is? Would it be more worthwhile to simply find a place downtown and pay more rent to not have to deal with parking?
Thank you!
Yup - good luck with parking. I paid and it was worth it. $90 per semester and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
For free you used to be able to park in Hagood (a bus ride away from campus - it sucks in the rain and it sucks in the heat and it sucks when people cough all over you). I don't know what is happening with Hagood now though. Something about baseball and limited parking - I'm sure Google will produce some information for you there. I parked in the BB lot first semester ($90) and then I parked in A lot after that. Either you pay to park or you park in the free lot and take the bus. I honestly don't remember when I was allowed to pay for parking for first semester but as soon as the opportunity presented itself - I did it. But 2nd through 4th semesters happened toward the end of first semester and I had to pay for ALL of it at once - yup - $270 at the moment I registered. No matter what, put your hang tag so its visible because even though you have to swipe your badge to get in the garage - they will still ticket you -$45 per ticket. Be ready for it, be committed and AS SOON AS IT OPENS - buy it and don't look back. It will all be gone within a couple hours of being released.
When it rains - it floods. Buy knee high rain boots because you'll need them as well as a rain coat because rain does not fall straight down here and umbrellas are worthless in the wind. Keep flooding in mind when looking for a place to live too.
Traffic sucks and sometimes it can take an hour to get to campus from West Ashley in the mornings - luckily most days it isn't that bad. Bicycles are an option as long as no one hits you. Sometimes it is faster - but it does rain a lot in the "Summer".
No matter how you get there - you have to plan for almost 30 minutes if you park in Hagood to get to the building. You also have to plan to walk about 10 minutes if you park in a garage. Add extra time if you are in white and its raining because people suck and they will splash you (I wore sweats and changed when I got to the building). Its like you are invisible in your white scrubs. Some people have those electric scooters that fold up - great idea to get you from your car to class faster - especially for Hagood people.
Keep in mind travel time to Mt. Pleasant at 4:00 when classes get out will be a nightmare. James Island isn't as bad. West Ashley isn't a great travel time either but its certainly better than Mt. P or Summerville or anything going that direction. Personally - I would find a place on James Island if you could. You'll have to drive and pay for parking, but your commute times will be minimal in comparison to everything else.

I just received my acceptance to the Fall 2020 program this morning and I am freaking out. This is my first acceptance letter as I wait to hear back from other programs I applied to. I am from Eugene, Oregon, so a bit far. Hopefully I hear back from my other programs soon, so I can make a decision!
Would you mind sharing your stats? Did you end up attending MUSC? If so how did you like the program?
Hi @alexann ! I did end up attending MUSC and am currently in my second semester of the program! I applied with a previous Bachelor's degree in Human Physiology and a GPA of 3.89. I had volunteer experience as a TA in undergrad. I also had previous healthcare experience in immunization compliance, as a CNA, and as a medical scribe. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to chat privately.

Thank you so much for your response! I tried to private chat you, but it says I'm not allowed to send private messages. Could you email me? My email is [email protected]

I’m originally from NJ but have been stationed here since 2016. I’m soo very excited to meet you. I have a bachelor’s in psychology and education. I’ve been a medical assistant before and always planned to go to nursing school!
Do you mind sharing your stats? Also how do you like the program? Thank you!
Hi Garrett!
I currently like the program. I am in my second semester. Maya_jk and I are in the same cohort. It is a lot of work and it’s overwhelming at times but it’s accelerated and you just have to stay organized during the program. I have a planner to help with organization. This cohort start in August 2020 and we are done in December 2021. So this year is busy busy. Every program has its ups and downs. You’d have to get into the program and see what you like and don’t like. I don’t make such a big fuss about things right now because it’s COVID and I feel like they are making the best they can. Working full time or even part time is kind of hard unless you only work on weekends and even that is a bit much when you have exams on Mondays. I currently only work on Fridays as a Patient Care Tech during the day. Hope this helps.
