MUSC ABSN Fall 2018

Published

I am currently in the process of applying to Musc's Absn program for fall 2018! I was wondering if anyone else is applying and what you stats are/will be before the application is due!

Dang. So there's absolutely no funding what so ever? There's no way I can get a private loan and my EFC is 0. That really doesn't make any sense because they admit students every year and send out acceptance letters around the same time. They really need to get their stuff together. I don't know how anyone can afford this program then. I tried asking current students but no one replied. It just sucks because I have to at lrready try which means I'll be out the matriculation fee if it comes down to the wire and they don't have any way to help us fund the schooling. I had my FAFSA and everything done way before then.

I just wanted to let everyone know what I found out today when I dropped by the campus. So, if your EFC is low, the financial aid office can award a loan through them for a max total of $4000. With the max student loan of $12500 a year, that puts it to where you're about $4000 short per semester for tuition onky for the remainder of the year (fall, spring, summer). The individual I spoke to did say that it is possible to get some additional funding from the college of nursing but he couldn't say for sure if they will give out more because it is handled all through them and sometimes they set some aside for incoming students, but it just depends on them. He said that it really just depends on there end if things. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can come up with the $4000 a semester. I'm looking into Nurse Corps as well and plan on applying as soon as the application opens up.

If I start a Facebook group, would ya'll join? :)

Definitely! I think it'd be a great place to share updates and info not just now but throughout the school year. Let me know when/ if you start one and I'll request to join!

I started a group!

The name is "MUSC ABSN Fall 2019" and the link is:

(I looked at the other MUSC ABSN groups and they're all named based on the graduation date.)

I sent my request. Thank u!

I was chosen as an alternate last month but just got a call a couple days ago that a spot opened up! I'm so excited!!! I haven't paid my matriculation fee yet because I have received my package in the mail. Is there any immunization/ drug test, buying books or anything else I should be getting started on??

Congrats!!! Did they say anything about how many spots they had opening up? and are you in state or out? Im an alternate too and am fully panicking that I wont ever get a call :(

They didn't say anything about other spots opening up, but I read on another thread about MUSC's ABSN program from a few years ago that they were offering alternates spot up to the first day of class!! Don't give up hope!!

They haven't sent out a lot of specifics. They did send us an email with orientation stuff. Immunizations we can start working on and the drug test I think is to be scheduled when they say so. The books they recommended waiting until class starts or a month before to see what we need specific to us and there are some uniforms they require and a white coat that needs to be embroidered before the stethoscope ceremony. We have a Facebook page set up so feel free to request access and then you can direct message me and I'll be happy to forward the emails and stuff :)

Oh my god! You sound like me now. I'm applying to the ABSN program for fall 2019. Did you get into the program and if you did, how is it going? I just applied last week. My undergraduate GPA is a 3.1 and my graduate GPA is a 3.1. (i'm consistent). My prerequisite GPA is at a 3.5 at the moment. Also have over 10 years of work experience as a social worker. Wondering how I will stack up??

I did get in and currently working through my 1st semester! Your experience plus graduate degree and your pre requisite GPA all sound really good. I think they do weigh the "personal statement" pretty high so pay close attention to that. It's short but I know mine helped push me over the top. I would also choose your references based on their experience either in medicine if you have someone who can do that or someone who can really make it personal on a professional level. I used all prior supervisors and one MD that I had worked with for my references. I think they like hearing that personal touch especially as it relates to compassion, dedication, and work ethic if that makes sense. They really just look for people they know will be willing to tough it out in the program and be as prepared as possible to finish the program. If you have a bachelors and a masters and a work history then I'd say you're pretty solid there. I am enjoying the program and they do everything they can to get you through it which is a nice change. A lot of places just don't care if you fail, they say that's on you. But here they will meet with you if you're even at risk of failing, make you go to the testing center and have someone sit down with you to see where you're missing the mark so that you can get back on track. At orientation they said that the only times they've had someone not make it through the program was when it was due to family, sickness, unforeseen situations and then they let them defer but not really for failing which kind of made me feel better, just to know if I'm willing to put in the work they would help me through it. Anyways, good luck and feel free to find me on Facebook if u have any questions!
