MUSC ABSN Fall of 2015

U.S.A. South Carolina

Published

I know this is still a little early, but I wanted to go ahead and make the thread so all prospective students could prepare. My credentials aren't nearly as good as a lot of people who have applied, but I felt like it was worth a shot since MUSC is my last chance at a BSN before I just do the ADN and bridge to BSN later on.

I should have right at a 3.1 at the time of my application. Made a C in Anatomy, a B+ in Physiology, and a B- in Chemistry. Microbiology will be in progress next semester, and I made pretty much As in every other non-science pre-req. I'm hoping that my volunteer and work experience will buffer my low GPA and grades :)

Hello everyone!! I applied, and am a nervous WRECK

Sarahliz51 what are your stats?

I have a 3.3 GPA, grad from USC-Columbia. I'm not sure about my science GPA actually. I'm a full time pharmacy technician, and in my first semester in Trident Tech's nursing program. I also volunteer at MUSC, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not! My GPA isn't the BEST, but hopefully my volunteering and healthcare experience stands for something. This is torture. haha. What are yours?

As of right now I have a 3.5 cumalative gpa, a 3.1 science, and a 3.1 pre req gpa. I have 85 volunteer hours from trident medical center, heartland care nursing home, and summerville medical center I am working on getting another 15 hours at SMC to have an even 100. I do not have hospital work experience however I am currently taking NUR 102 at trident tech and once I complete that I plan on getting a job in a hospital as a pct.

I'm currently taking Nur 102 also with the SAME plan of taking getting certified and applying for the hospital. I'm studying for our test now :arghh:

I've answered 1,100 prep u questions attempting to study for the test! I'm freaking out lol

Sarahliz51 how did you do on the first test!?

Does anyone know if we find out in March or closer to April? Ahhh January went by so slowly. I'm going crazy not knowing if I got accepted or not and March/April seems so far away! Phew! Deep breaths :)

definitely by march, i know the last fall semester had 425 applicants so we had 100 less and they found out around 15-18 march so I'm hoping we find out in the beginning of march and at the latest mid march like the last fall group :)

Hi Guys!

My name is Sarah. I'm 24 with a previous degree in Athletic Training. I took two years off to brush up on my pre-reqs. I live in Charlotte, NC and work as a nanny. I volunteer with a few different organizations, nothing really medical. I work as an ATC on weekends for extra cash. I have a 3.75 GPA and was also fortunate enough to qualify for a Navy Scholarship so once I am completed with school, I will be officially enlisted. I also applied to Utica College in Tampa, Duke University, University of Florida, and obviously MUSC.

I'm starting to get really anxious! I'm ready to know where I will be moving to!

Hi! I was wondering if someone could tell me something that may improve my chances of getting into the program for next admission cycle. I've applied to the Fall 2015 cohort but know that my chances are slim to none with my low cumulative GPA. It's at a 3.27 and my GPA at the University I'm currently at is a 3.52. I was previously a student elsewhere for a year, took a break and returned to school and that's why there is the difference in GPA there.

Just where I'm at now: I currently serve treasurer for the Student Dietetic Ass. for my university (I'm at the University of Alabama), I'm an intern and campaign coordinator through the student health center as a peer health educator, we are called Project Health. I'm also part of Phi U Omicron, an honor society within my college that does community outreach. I have clinical experience but with dietetics, not nursing. I have volunteer hours through work I've done in the positions I currently hold. I'm unsure of what my science GPA is but I made both C's in A and P, an A in micro, B in inorganic chem, and B in organic chem, the other prereqs I have A's and B's in.

I'm also in-state, I started at Trident and took a break because I wasn't in school mode and went back to school at Alabama when I figured out what I wanted to do. I was wondering if anyone could tell me something I could do now to better my chances for next time!

Thanks ya'll!

Hey smqzo,

I am currently a student in the ABSN program at MUSC. Don't get too discouraged about your stats, I got accepted with a comparable GPA (albeit as an alternate initially). Best of luck with the Fall cycle, but if you don't get in definitely shoot for the Spring semester as there are typically fewer applicants.

As for how to improve your chances, I would recommend trying to work as a PCT/CNA if you can. To do this, you may need to take a short course at a technical college and pass the state exam or if you have a bachelors you may be able to apply for a position directly at some places (eg. MUSC). The best thing about doing this is not only will it help prepare you for skills lab/clinicals in nursing school, but it will also augment your application nicely.

Other advice would be to make sure that all non-grade-related aspects of your application are of a high quality. Make sure you do the essay well and do not exceed the word limit; make sure you have good references; make sure you have a good resume.

Beyond that just hope for the best and don't give up. If you make the alternate list don't be discouraged because they tend to go through quite a few people on the list. I would also recommend calling in a little while after you hear that alternates are being called on (if you make it on the list), as this is what I did and a day later I got the phone call offering me a position.

Best of luck.
