hi everyone!
I've been around this site for a few years, but have been pretty busy lately and have not posted much due to school! lol I live in Ontario, Canada and I am a Practical Nursing student.
For my assignment, I have a set of questions that I need answered by someone from another ethnic background than myself (good old canadian eh;) ). It would only take a few minutes of your time and I would be forever grateful! I also realize that some information is extremely personal, and if you prefer you can PM me with your reply. I would love to hear from more than 1 person, but I will take what I can get!
Below are the questions:
1) Identify your ethnic background and geographic origin.
2) Tell me a little about your cultural heritage.
3) What are your beliefs about health and well being? Do you have any specific beliefs about illness?
4) What alternative health care practices do you or your family use?
5) What resources might you need if hospitalized? eg: interpretation
6) Do you or your family members have any religious or dietary practices that would need to be respected if hospitalized or in a long term care facility?
7) What educational programs or clinics do you or your family member use in the community? eg: ESL, parenting support
I truly appreciate your time and effort in helping me with this assignment.
Thank you in advance.
Marina
P.S...I should add that this is due on August 2nd 2006, so the sooner the better! Thanks again!

1. Kenyan
2. Family is very important. Christian values, respect for the elderly, Comunal responsibility-"It takes a village to raise a child", cooperation rather than competition.
3. What are your beliefs about health and well being? Do you have any specific beliefs about illness?
Lifestyle determines state of health--healthy eating, physical activity, emotional and spritual wellbeing---from the perspective of being a nutritionist.
From a cultural perspective, illness may be an act of God or of evil, ancestral curse, inheritance (family background).
Herbal medicine, divine healing (prayer)
5. What resources might you need if hospitalized? eg: interpretation
A culturally sensitive doctor/nurse. I had a a friend of mine who is an American Dietitian call me requesting for assistance since she had a Kenyan patient who had diabetes but was having an awful time communicating about healthy eating since the Kenyan diet is very different from the American diet. Also my peditriacian once criticized co-sleeping with children and carrying small children on the mother's back saying that was an old practice done by nomads from East Africa--he had no idea I came from this part of the world and these practices are normal to us.
See above. fasting, dislike of sweet foods--not part of our diet, goat barbecue is a delicacy.
Primary health care, media, Journals, personal knowledge ( I am a nutritionist).

actually, my person one is very boring...lol! however, i have a friend who would be of interest so i asked them the questions for you, and here are their answers.
1) identify your ethnic background and geographic origin. native american indian, confederated tribes of the warm springs. wasco and paiute native american tribes, stretching from the summit of the cascade mountains to the cliffs of the deschutes river in central oregon.
2) tell me a little about your cultural heritage. please see the following web page http://www.warmsprings.com/warmsprings/tribal_community/history__culture/culture/. excellent summary and brief history of the peoples of warm springs. my friend is wasco, paiute, nez pierce and much later on, japanese american. (i have some sad but educational stories of confinement camps my friend's grandparents and parents remember...first for being indian and having to change to a christian lifestyle, then again being japanese! very sad and unfair, but it was what was done).
3) what are your beliefs about health and well being? traditionally, the well being of a person is rich in cultural history for many tribes thoughout american and alaska. beliefs have their origins mainly from nature, and are deep set into naturalpathic/homeopathic practices for body, mind and spirit (all are considered vital and whole). with the advent of the indian health services by the us government in 1778, more modern western practices came to assist in the general health needs of american indians all over the us, (you can read more on this at http://www.ihs.gov/index.asp). as time passed, the traditional practices have dwindled, giving way to more modern forms of medicine. now, most cultural health practices from tradition are but only small simple home remedies taught by elders, found in history books, and have become a part of the past. you can still find shaman (traditional medicine people) today, which some people still do, however...due to cost, time, and modernization...most indian peoples rely now on the us healthcare systems as other americans do. do you have any specific beliefs about illness? deep set in culture, the people of the warm springs do have a foundation in believing in the body being of the physical and spiritual as one. stemming from beliefs that nature and the spirits of nature are the foundation of all living things, and the cures and answers to what changes the condition of the body and spirit can be found there with the help of traditional medicine practitioners (shaman). but with modernization, these core beliefs have dwindled, and more modern western style theories and care have been adopted. however, many still have the traditional thoughts as a foundation since childhood being in the culture, but this too is dwindling with time.
4) what alternative health care practices do you or your family use? besides a few naturalpathic/homeopathic remedies (as most people do thoughout the us) for minor conditions (cuts, scrapes, headaches, stomachaches, lethargy, etc.), modern medicine is typically the best source for our families, and available with clinics run by the tribe. outside sources in nearby cities provide other modern medicine (hospitals, cancer treatment centers, etc.).
5) what resources might you need if hospitalized? eg: interpretation the department of the ihs assists with costs and other needs such as spiritual, interpretation (although quite rare now, most of the native languages are being lost), disability access, home care, and other services as needed.
6) do you or your family members have any religious or dietary practices that would need to be respected if hospitalized or in a long term care facility? for hospitals, not really anymore. most traditional practices are done privately or with members of the tribe. typically these are not asked for in modern hospitals due to the private nature of beliefs and to be honest...most modern practioners do not know anything of the beliefs or practices even if requested. for long term care, there are facilities on the reservation for the needs of elderly where their beliefs and health are honored and observed to the best of the facilities abilities.
7) what educational programs or clinics do you or your family member use in the community? eg: esl, parenting support. there are many! please see the following for a list and mission statement:

this was written by triagern_34, with help by her friends and the confederated tribes of the warm springs web site and links at: http://www.warmsprings.com/

respect for Mother Earth and for each other
must observe all tribal rituals and live in harmony with Mother Earth
extensive use of the remedies and blessings (food) ME has given us
We use modern Western medicine + various folkways (like rice water for diarrhea, shots of la penicilina for just about whatever ails you, available

Decisions are made by our leaders (of the tribe and family). We would never think of deciding important things without the counsel and blessing of our elders.
Clean, healthy food, balanced work and rest, cleanliness of one's home, clothing, and body, sanitation of one's hands, food, and abode, purity of one's heart and spirit are paramount.
Women are deeply loved and highly prized but are subservient.
We do not fight death. It is a part of life. We live life fully, we love life, we value and prize it but we believe the afterlife is even better than our life on earth.
Bless you and I hope this helps.
Thank you all so much!! I will be sure to let you know how I score on this assignment! I truly appreciate the time you took to help me!!
