MTSAC's lottery number (2010)

U.S.A. California

Published

I just received my lottery number and I am number 926! I applied November 2009.

I just wanted to put the information on here so we can see how far we are along the list. I know that some people will pick other programs, change majors, etc and hoping my number will go down. But 929 is very high and seems that I wont get in for years.

Here are the numbers that I got some someone else.

725

850

Anyone out there?

I called the nursing department yesterday and they said I won't receive my first letter until August =[. I applied in April, which was only two months ago and I thought letters were supposed to go out in May (for those who are new) but I guess not. Does anybody know if this was always the case? Or is the department behind? So now I'm wondering if I get my first letter in August, does that mean I get another letter some time in January (since thats usually the time they send out letters)? Hmmm...kind of confused maybe I should call and ask again.

It took a couple of months for me to receive my first letter. I applied in October 2008, received my first letter in January 2009, then another in August 2009 with an updated lottery number, same thing again in January 2010. Then this past May I received my letter to start this fall. From what I understand, they send the letters out during those months because the classes are already selected for the upcoming term and they can give you a more accurate number of your position. Also, from what I've noticed, the nursing department does always seem to run behind...

Okay everyone don't hold me to this but i went in last week and hanged around some 1st semester students. They filled me in on tons of stuff. One thing was this, that Mt. Sac use to take 96 each semester(Fall/Spring) then they went down to 60 students, that is how some of us got in, now the students were telling me because of budget cuts they will be taking 30 students now. I don't know if this is totally true, but i do know they were taking the 60 students because she told me in order to get her 60 they had to send out 120 letters at least.

I don't want to disappoint anyone but if this is so it might be a little longer. The good thing is that a lot of other colleges are accepting students and there is a small percentage(more than we know) that will get in somewhere else.

So with that said hold on tight and don't lose your enthusiasm!

Thank you very much for this information. Anything is helpful for all of us. Hopefully its not true that they are going to accept 30 students. Hopefully they still accept 60 at least. We shall see! :) I hope to start next year!

Thanks a Bunch!

Just finished orientation-four days total. It was a lot of information-a lot of resources, i am glad it's over. We also had a pre-test for math i think it was on the third day or second, i passed yeah!! if a student doesn't pass then there is remediation, but student will remain in the program with remediation for math.

I am so excited and emotional, it's all becoming so real, i've waited so long for this, about 5 years, my gosh i should be working as a nurse already but due to my husband's job they've we have relocated twice, but now are home with family.

The final day of the orientation is a reception-they set it up very nice and talk to your significant other. It really helped my husband jump on the bandwagon with me.

They said out of 12,500 students just at Mt. Sac alone we are sitting in their spots and they are scratching right behind us.

I asked the dept. chair about all this negative talk about graduate nurses and their jobs, the news was very encouraging. In a few years the shortage will be huge again, YEAH!!!!!!! Right when we graduate!

Just wanted to let everyone know prepare yourselves-literally prepare yourselves, brush up on your math, your medical terminology, make it easier for yourself.

Any questions feel free to ask me :) Excited!!!!:nurse::redbeathe

Hi There,

Ah, I am so happy for you! I feel like wow there are other people out there that went through what I am going through now, Waiting for the nursing program, thinking it will never get here. But look at you! Your in, Finally! So do you happen to know how much the first semester will cost give or take? I will have to pay for the program and what kind of math do you recommend that we go over for the test you took. If you can let us know how first semester is too, so we can start preparing, Maybe give us the ISBN number for the Pharm Book so we can start going over it, I would greatly appreciate it so much! :):):):)

Thanks DD

Sure anything i can do to help-well the pre-test we took is very basic but tricky basic, not the norm. For example we did a lot of fractions, ratios(i love them!) proportions. Pretty much that's it!! simple huh? well not so simple unless you master it. I mean you don't want to go in thinking you have your math down, "oh i've done calculus, geometry and sor forth i won't have a prob. On the fourth day there was a younger student who said he did all his math and still struggled with some of the calculation dosages, he tutored everyone else so i would imagine yeah he did better than the average student.

Ummmm the Pharmacology instructor likes the ration/proportion method of calculating dosages, to me i think the formula method is easy. I don't mean to lose you here, not sure if you're familiar with formulas for dosage calcs. The only reason i know is i've been reading a Pharm book, actually devouring it, and it's been helpful. Anyway most students struggle with math during the program, so if you can master those formulas and put them to practice in a book i would suggest you DO IT! i can't stress the point enough really.

We have a pharmacology book, which they didn't mention would be changing anytime soon, nevertheless it's still all the same info, i wouldn't think they would change the subjects covered, so if you can afford it buy used pharmacology book and study. Get a heads up.

However the nursing fundamental book has a textbook, handbook, study guide and they all have same cover, but Kozier(publisher) is coming out with new edition so i wouldn't buy that. I wouldn't worry to much about the fundamentals of nursing book just yet. The pharm book however i would worry about, sorry, so many students say it pushes right over the edge, because there's so much info from lecture and so much to do, write up and so forth with clinical that pharmacology is very challenging so we all know how math can be frustrating at times, even when a student is good at it, still it's ahhhh very time consuming.

I have so much paperwork, emails(tons) and phone numbers of everybody we can use during program, lol, i'm looking through my book bag, i haven't even tackled going through all of it and prioritizing!! I won't mentions all the other stuff that needs to be done before you even start, physical, background, uniforms, clinical bag, emblems, books, and tons of paperwork!! oh gosh, we were all so overwhelmed by the fourth day(reception)we were all so emotional and exhausted(mentally) they were full days broken down and outlined by the hour/minutes, crazy!!

Ok looking for the ISBN for you. 978-0-323-05544-4 Pharmacology and the nursing process 6th edition from that ISBN you should be able to buy study guide also and there's another math book that goes along with it. Calculate with Confidence 5th edition 978-0-323-05629-8

So three books for pharm. Now if i was in your position, waiting to enter i would study my bottom off!! i wish i would of had somebody telling me to do this. I did however study a pharmacology book that has so much info including calculations, it has helped.

They have this nursing kit for 1st semester students that gives you all the book in box for $516 or $507 something like that, and it has everything you need. I wouldn't let that stop you from getting at least the main textbook for yourself before you even get accepted. you can always sell it later, believe the benefits are going to outweigh the cost of it!!

so i hope this helps you, really start studying, over summer i will getting a hold of pharm also, i'm not waiting. I also told myself i will start to study diseases to know them. Imagine how much time and headache that is going to save me!! that's why i am telling you it's going to come quick and be ready!!

Best of luck!! keep in touch with me, i'll be blogging daily when i start 1st semester on here, look out for my thread, don't want to scare you ;) or myself, oh Gosh!!!! what did i get myself into :)

Hello There,

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know when the August letters will be mailed? The beginning or probably late August? Just want to make sure I dont miss a letter because I have missed a couple of letters. It was mailed to my old adress although I updated the address. Any information will be helpful!

Thanks All,

DD

Hey DD.... I have called them a couple weeks ago asking the same question. The secretary there told me the letters should be out between late Aug to early Sept. I also asked if they were planning on reducing the amount of student they accepted every semester. She told me yes! :( (due to budget) they will be cutting down from 60 to 50 students. She didn't know what semester this would take affect. Good luck! :)

Hello There,

Wow! That sucks! But hopefully they will start next year or not at all cutting seats.:) Well, I am number 133 on the list. I hope to get in by next Fall 2011. What is you place in the list? if you dont mind me asking. Looks like we are on the same boat. Ah, I cant wait for my letter to see what number I will be.

Thanks for the Information :):):):)
