MSU Denver ANO 2019 Spring start

Published

Hi! I'm going to move to Colorado at the end of the year and I'm finishing my application for the Accelerated program at MSU Denver.

Anybody else is applying too?

Hey A, I've only posted in this thead, so give me a means to email (since we can't dm); for me, it'd be too identifiable. No worries if the same on your end

All the best to the upcoming cohort... I suspect you have no idea how interesting your lives are about to become (AND fun, if you allow it!)

Would love to connect by email - my work is probably best - [email protected]

thanks!!

Congrats to everyone accepted! I'm so happy for you! I decided not to take Patho because I knew that my chances were slim with only 10 points, instead I applied to Denver College of Nursing (any thoughts?) and UC Denver, hopefully I'll get in at UC!

Advocate4Pt, thank you for all the info, you are great!

YOU, minaya, are great. I was thinking about you when I was writing the last couple of posts (you hadn't written anything since the first page, yet rest assured, I wrote so much because you were so thoughtlul in your posts, which the wonderful colocrane picked up upon). I, again, suspect you'll b a great nurse. I'll write more to the both of you (such specials) when i get the chance..in the next few days/week.

In the meantime to all who've been accepted, again, I have no extra knowledge:I'd get my flu shot and first hep b, if you haven't had it before *and make sure to get paper copy of all doc w/sigs, you'll need it

Hey Everyone!

I just saw someone else's post about not hearing back from the school. I sent my signed acceptance letter out to the school last week, and received the automated message that Karen Becker was out of the office.

I still have not heard anything. Has anyone else gotten a reply or any correspondence regarding the next steps??

Advocate4Pt, you are making me blush! All the info you posted was great, and I really appreciate your comments here (I'm sure I'm not the only one) and I would love to buy you a coffee when I finalize my move to Denver (still taking the pre reqs in NY). Of course anybody who wants to join is welcomed, I'd be delighted of meeting you all in person. My email is [email protected].

Thanks again!

Hi Durdlee, I was concerned that Karen had not gotten mine and i got the automatic reply as well, and then she emailed me back saying she got it!

Hi Minaya,

Re: those two schools: I honestly had not heard of DCN before you wrote that; this is really not to impugn them, I only considered CU (incidentally, this is how it's referred to out here, not sure why, maybe to differentiate w/the UCs in Cali?) and MSUD. I only applied to MSUD (CU's required prereqs didn't match up too well with my previous coursework, even tho' I had a lot of chem/physics/calc/bio etc). Do be cognizant that there is also a Denver *School of Nursing. CU Denver is an awesome nursing school. By the way, MSUD has the best NCLEX pass rates in the state, last time I looked (this is public info --on board of nursing or health dept site, can't remember), with CU being #2. I recently worked with a CU nursing student who said she loves her program, as do I. When will you hear about these?

I hope that this works out for you and you come out here. I was also thinking that I need to correct myself: I think that if you had a CNA and 250 hrs, that would add 3 points to your ten for MSUD to make a 13 (I think your hesi is good for 12 months after you took it, so apply within this time period if it works--and verify this timing with the department to be sure), with which I'd be very confident. Also, if you were to take patho at MSUD in the fall after submitting the application by August deadline, definitely take Dr. Jemison ("Dr J") if he is teaching it. He is a physician, a really good guy, and an awesome professor.

Wow, did I just write a lot of parentheticals?! A x2: how funny you both have the same first name; I'll email you both in the next week or so, we are about to enter another pretty busy time. Oh, this reminds me about another thing that surprised me: there are periods where there are no clinicals for like a month, where it is obviously less full-on, where more work outside of school can be done. Flexibility is key. Not to say there aren't periods like summer, where there is med-surg 1 and psych, both with clinicals right on top of eachother, where time for sleep was a very fleeting thang.

Others: feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

**shoot, I meant to quote your post

And while I'm thinking of it: (CU) University Hospital is also an incredibly good hospital system, with exceptional nurses, docs, etc.

@colocrane : Thank you for researching that. I plan on switching down to PRN the weekend before school starts. Regarding the acceptance letter, I did not confirm unfortunately but I had emailed her about classes a couple days ago and I did receive the email she sent out today about providing more information. So BIG exhale!

@ Advocate4Pt: Omg thank you for posting. I've been having so much butterflies pretty much about everything. Especially when my co-workers ask how am I going to deal with the stress of an accelerated program or give me that ohhh ( wide eyed, scared look) your not going to have a personal or work life. It was very reassuring to read all your pass alongs. I know that this is going to be an awesome program and there will be awesome people in our cohort. I am most excited about clinicals since I am more of a hands on learner. Were they 8 or 12 hour shifts and what were the main area of study?

Hi naphmic,

Really quickly, I'll write more in the next week or so (incidentally, rather than 'you're welcome' please just pay it forward).

12 hrs. Hands on: awesome. Not 'hysterical', yet I wouldn't trust people in/near our situations if they didn't have a (quite) healthy amount of fear (incl 'butterflies pretty much about everything'). Both relating to school (waives to a recent OB exam) and always to the highest stakes, our patients, I would be quite concerned if we were *not* fearful (at this point).

Thank you for posting.
