Hi! I'm going to move to Colorado at the end of the year and I'm finishing my application for the Accelerated program at MSU Denver.
Anybody else is applying too?
Hello All!
(this is literally my first post on AN)
I am currently a student in the ANO program at MSUD and found the previous threads here to be extremely helpful, if only to survive that excruciatingly painful waiting period between August applications and Oct/Nov when you hear back. So, I am paying it forward; please ask any questions that you may have.
In the meantime, a few responses:
Minaya: I'm so sorry, I don't think there is any chance that you are getting in with a 10. You seem like you'd be great (starting the thread and getting 98s on the HESI speaks volumes to me). Can you get a CNA and do 250+ hours before next Aug? Perhaps that would raise you to 12, which I believe is the bare minimum. Please look at the big picture: what is another year when you can (hopefully, burnout in this thang is real) then spend 20-30-- years being an awesome nurse?
AKgreenberg92: With all due respect: Accelerated BSN programs are only about 18 months, if you cannot complete your first one and are already looking to transfer (which I think is incredibly unlikely to be successful) perhaps this is not the profession for you. I don't care if anyone thinks that is too harsh, we need amazing people to be nurses (which my cohort are, truly exceptional human beings who will make outstanding nurses; as are the core professors/instructors).
Eboehler: Elizabeth: Congratulations! I think it will be a pleasure to have you as a future fellow alumnus and nurse! The (core) instructors are amazing! I have absolutely loved my time here (yet there are absolutly very scary times, this coming from someone who is pretty confident).
Ericksoh: I believe you are on the cutoff, I wish you the best.
Colocrane: I believe you are also on/near the cutoff and also wish you the best. Judging by your avatar pic, I suspect you will be a great (and bad***) nurse. Great job on the GPA and HESI. I hope we are colleagues in the future.
This is absolutely an incredible experience. It is most definitely not for the faint of heart. Yes, we must do the former to become the latter, yet let us remember that our goals are not to get in and be a great student, rather to become a great nurse to our beloved patients (yes, even the very difficult ones, which are there...bless their hearts).
All the best!
Hey Advocate4Pt,
Just wanted to thank you for your very thorough and thoughtful response!! I found it instructive and helpful! Congrats on marching through the program as I'm sure you're in the throes of some hairy schoolwork right now.
I did have a couple of questions and please do not feel as though you have to answer with much detail (or at all if your schedule doesn't permit) - but here they are!
1. Can you remember how many admissions points you had? As I looked through the threads, it seems to be that the cut off is definitely 12 and some of those get in while some are waitlisted. I know this forum is just a small sampling - but any info is helpful!
2. When you began this program, did you begin 12 hour clinical days on a weekly basis? There is just so little time between when the acceptance emails go out and when the classes start that those of us with jobs and children really need to be thinking about what our schedules may look like and I cannot find any information with specifics!
Again - best of luck as you have the finish line in your sights!! And thanks for any light you can shed on the above!
Wow, AN has now consumed 2 of my very long and thoughtful responses, particularly focused to you, colocrane.
Synopsis: I absolutely have no inside info (and there is a new 'Andrew', yet i think our first responses were received at about this time previously):
I suspect (and hope) that this is going to be a very good upcoming 7 days to you, colocrane.
1) 12, >96 both
2) NO! Rest assured, there is DEFINITELY time! Yes, I was SO concerned about these exact issues after having been accepted. PLEASE: let me assure you it is not just possible, it is SO feasible to simply successfully to do both/all (hey, yanno those great core instructors? yeah, they are awesome people who know exactly what you are going through, while at the same time making awesome nurses for the future..while being great mothers). Also, please simply ask the instructors, they are awesome.
....ok, I'll write more.
...in the meantime, colocrane: i look at your pic again and want to communicate to all how amazingly diverse our whole (ANO) class has been. Wow, such diversity and I absolutely can shake my head at my disbelief how awesome have been my extraordinarily exceptional colleagues in this endeavor.
One last point: if (hopefully you get in), you have a high bar to maintain as an ANO to all of your clinical patients, and their facilities... please this is where it really counts. From us, to our patients.
hey everyone! I also got accepted to spring cohort!!! Random question, when you signed and emailed back your acceptance letter did you get a conformation email?
Congrats!! I did NOT get a confirmation and have been stewing about it for days! Finally, I sent an email today to ask for a confirmation and got an autoresponder that she is out today. Doesn't indicate when she will be returning, either. I absolutely hate to bug them when things must be crazy, but I need to know that they received my document to accept my place in the cohort - so do you! I would write a very short email just asking for confirmation and then let us know if you got anything back. I'll do the same!
Congrats on everyone that got accepted!!!! I got accepted also!
Is anyone planning on working during the program? I am trying to decided if I should go PRN or leave all together to make sure I have the time needed to study.
There was not a time on my acceptance email for the orientation, did anyone get one on theirs?
Can't wait to meet you guys. :)

Congratulations to you, too! I am planning to work. I'm a clinical nutritionist and only see clients a couple days a week right now but I'll slow that down to a trickle once school begins. And if things get too busy, I am prepared to quit. I have done a bit of research on how many people work and which programs allow/discourage/even prohibit working and have found a variety of answers. From what I can find, it appears that the shorter accelerated programs (close to 12 months) discourage work or even have you sign an agreement that you will not work during the program. When the programs are longer (like ours), I find mixed messages. Some students say that they work quite easily but that your schedule must be flexible. While others say that it's terribly busy and they had to quit working altogether. It's likely going to be a very individual decision and I'm feeling like we won't have much information for quite some time.
Regarding the time for the orientation - I don't think any of the emails stated what time. More waiting!!
See you soon!

It works out well for me, but honestly, I think it's a little unfair that they award 2 points for having 60+ credits from Metro. Anyway, Metro is the only school that I'm applying to. I loved going to school there and I think the atmosphere is really welcoming and inclusive. I also love the idea of being able to get a BSN in 17 months. I thought about applying to UC Denver but I believe their accelerated program is 12 months and that's just too intense for me.
