MSMC ABSN Summer 2012

Published

Hey everyone,

Is anyone applying to Mount St. Mary's ABSN program for Spring 2012? I was thinking about applying to the ADN program, but I talked with one of the advisors on the Doheny campus and she told me to look into the ABSN program since I already have a bachelor's degree. However, I'm a little concerned with my low GPA that I've received from my undergraduate bachelor's degree. She told me to keep taking classes to raise my GPA, but I have way too many credits from my last degree and I don't think it'll go up any higher no matter how many classes I take. I currently have A's & B's in my prereq's...

Is anyone in the same situation as I am??? Or for any of those that got into the ABSN program have a low cumulative GPA?

I graduated in August, took NCLEX in October and have been unemployed ever since. :(

However, I learned a lot from the first go around and am just starting the second wave of applications and hopefully will land a job soon. I have an interview tomorrow with the county for Public Health Nurse.

As far as paying for it all, I got about $12,000 through FedLoan, both subsidized and unsub, and the rest was through Wells Fargo. Total was $70k. Good thing I had good credit and no mortgage. I also had some money put away and during winter break the class and I went to Price Is Right and I did really well. ;), so that has paid for my bills since I got out of school.

Aww, oh no! How are you unemployed? Is there a specific hospital or position you want to work in or are they not hiring new grads? Good luck with the interview tomorrow! Hopefully, you'll get the job :)

That's what I'm probably going to do with my loans. Do you recommend Sallie Mae or any other loan company besides Wells Fargo? My friend, who also attended MSMC ABSN, also graduated last August and she got her loans through Wells Fargo as well. Maybe I'll take a look at Wells Fargo's loan plan.

Thanks, sugarlips!

Casey89, hdkim, and girlpiggie,

Thanks for your advice. Even if I don't make it the first time around, I'm going to try until I do! Thanks again :)

hdkim,

Did you apply to NU as well by any chance? It seems they don't have a chemistry requirement or expiration on pre-reqs (unless I misread their website).

Specializes in Pediatrics.

In regards to loans I went with Wells Fargo because they gave me the best rates. Sallie Mae was outrageous.

In regards to getting a job, well, all you need to do is look at the threads on here to find out that competition is HUGE! 1500 - 7000 applications for most new grad programs. I've applied to many, and have to admit I was not completely prepared for my interviews that I did get on the first wave. However, I have learned a lot in the process and am ready to go on this 2nd wave of applications. I haven't interviewed in over 14 years, as my previous job I had for over 10 years, and that one fell into my lap through a temp agency. Feeling confident on this go around.

Also, with budget constraints many programs have been cut or canceled altogether. I was really counting on Cedars Sinai, but they canceled their winter cohort and now waiting for them to open up any day now. However, keep in mind that programs start sometimes as much as 6 months after the initial application period. UCLA and CHLA, for example. Currently I'm waiting on a decision with LA County. I applied in January, got interviewed this week. I need to wait 2 weeks for scoring results, then will need to wait for an office to do a 2nd interview, depending on my score. Then will need to wait for processing including background check, psych test, psych written test and something else before I could even start, let alone get a paycheck. In summary, be sure to ask for more money than you think you will need.

When trying to figure out your loan amount remember to think about housing, insurance (car), medical copays (if you take the school's insurance be prepared to pay 25% of costs after deductible), car registration (I had forgotten this one), food, parking (UCLA makes you pay as students - carpool!!!! from the VA), gas, paper and printing, as well as presentation materials and other random school supplies.

Hi sugarlips,

Yeah I'm thinking about Wells Fargo - they seem reasonable to me. Oh, wow sounds crazy. I hope it's not as competitive next year or the year after... I'm scared I won't get a job right after I graduate. A couple of my friends graduated with a BSN around 2009-2011 and they got jobs right away. I hope everything with the economy works out and becomes a lot better. The job process seems so complicated! I hope everything works out well for you!

As for getting my loan, I'm only going to get the amount I need to pay for the program. My fiancé has good income and he's going to take care of everything else :)

Good luck with the second job interview!

Hey trulyours,

Not sure if I've replied to your post. Sorry if I didn't! Where is NU? Did you mean NYU? I didn't apply anywhere else except MSMC. I want to stay in LA; plus I don't want to leave my fiancé alone here! Would hate to not be able to see him :( He has a permanent job that he loves, thus not being able to move anywhere. Good luck!

hi, i've been accepted to the may 2012 cohort and finally decided to commit to it. i've also been accepted usd mepn- msn in clinical nursing, samuel merritts elmsn-fnp, charles drew elmsn clinical nursing and have been on the fence for months now. after realizing how much each program is going to cost, how long it's going to take, and the starting salary of a new fnp, mount saint mary's makes the most sense for what i'll be getting and i'm planning on working for a few years before going back for a msn to specialize. i'm excited to start the program and get working as a new grad rn. does anyone know if there's a fb group made for this cohort yet? if not, i will make one =) i found the mount saint mary's group that's graduating this year and it seems like a really good resource to communicate throughout the program and hangout!

Did anyone hear back from Admissions yet? Eeek, can't stand the wait! Every time I check WebAdvisor, my heart races...

hi nat714,

congrats on getting into msmc absn program! wish i was in your position! i'm also planning on working for a bit before getting my msn. i want to eventually become a crna (certified registered nurse anesthetist). but we'll see :)

i'm not sure if there's a facebook group for the may 2012 cohort. i think this thread slowly turned into msmc absn fall 2012.

i wish you the best of luck in the program! take care.

Hi Everyone! I applied for the August Class. Has anyone been accepted with out having an interview? My application was incomplete for the May class so I didn't get accepted or rejected so I re-activated and now my chem is expired, but I have physics that can count. I talked to someone in Admissions and they said we would hear from them June or July if we get accepted. I'm excited and nervous to hear from them. My undergrad was low too, but my pre-reqs I kicked butt. Cross fingers we all get it in.

Hi Star28,

I also got rejected in the first round (May 2012 cohort) because my Physics/Chemistry class was expired (didn't check carefully, oops!) I'm in the same position as you with my undergraduate GPA and prereqs GPA!

We hear from them that late? Wow, it's going to be a while then. I've been checking my WebAdvisor a couple times everyday since I've applied. Waiting is not fun! Hopefully, we all get in :)

Hi all!Just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!! to all those who got accepted!! I'm in the August cohort and wanted to see if anyone would like to buy my new, never been used uniforms. Bought too many and have no need for them. Let me know if youre interested! Again, congrats and look forward to meeting you guys!
