Moving to Georgia

can anyone tell me what the work is like in the atlanta area for agency nurses? what is the pay (i am tele) and what is the nurse to patient ratio? any hospitals i should stay away from? and which do you consider the best? thanks

As for pay, it varies from hospital to hospital and agency to agency. $32-35/hr. is not uncommon. I personally would stay away from Grady, poor conditions and bad(as in dangerous) enviroment. I don't know too many females that will work there, I know a few males that work ED and they tell stories enough to keep me away. I have heard both good things and bad things about DeKalb. A good friend of mine has worked there and she said it was ok, but you worked your tail off. She was on telemetry and had about 6 patients. I don't know about the units. None of the hospitals in northwest Georgia (Dalton, Chattsworth and Fort Oglethrope)are fit to work in. Lousy pay, conditions, and unsupportive management. I hear Marietta is a good place to work, I don't personally know. The Medical Center of Central Georgia is in Macon, about 1 1/2hours south of Atlanta, and it is a wonderful place, good staffing and pay.

I used to live in the Atl. I was a student then and worked as a tech on a tele floor, but I can tell you we had a lot of agency nurses. Southern Regional Medical Center is where I worked and it was a good place. All the agency nurses liked it. It's on the southside of Atl though about 45 minutes south of Marrietta. In the Marrietta area you have Kennestone Hospital, Crawford Long are both good places to check out. Had a friend and a cousin who were nurses at those. Georgia Baptist is also supposed to be good. Definitely avoid Grady as the pay is not worth the headache, and when I checked Grady's payscale last year, it's not that great either. Rumors exaggerate what they pay their nurses. Also, ask about your nurse/pt ratio. On my tele floor a good day was 5-6 pts on days per RN and 6-7 pts on nights per RN. They would not hesitate to give you more though if staffing was low, unless the nurses spoke up. The $32-35 figure someone mentioned is about right. Keep in mind though living in Atl is expensive! Housing is through the roof if you don't get well outside of the city limits. Hope this helps.
