Hello all!
I'm new to the site and I'll be moving to the Cleveland area this August from out of state. I'm looking for an ADN program that I can complete as quickly as possible. I know I'll have to take prereqs, but then it seems like even after those there's a waiting period to see if you get into the programs. How long does that usually last? Can I reasonably expect to take prerequisites in the Fall(2010) and then start a program in the Spring or even Fall of next year(2011)?
I called Tri-C earlier today to ask about this and the woman I talked to was very rude and unhelpful.
And since we're moving I'm open to slightly different areas that could work. I know the Akron area is a possibility.
I'd appreciate any help in the matter! Thanks so much.

I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience when you called Tri-C today. That is not the image we hope to put out there! Please consider putting your concerns in writing, to the attention of the Dean of Nursing.
I would say that it is unlikely that you could complete prerequisites in Fall 2010 and expect to begin a nursing program in Spring 2011 at any nursing program in Northeastern Ohio. By the time your Fall grades are posted, it would be close to Christmas and most programs have additional hurdles, such as an admission test, you'd have to complete prior to being put on a list for entering their program. Remember, "Spring 2011" really means January 2011 in a program that has semesters, which most Ohio programs use instead of quarters; the turnaround time is just too close. You certainly could start a program in Fall 2011, though.
You don't say what part of Cleveland you'll be living in, but Tri-C is opening a West Shore campus in Westlake, which means there will be an additional 48 spaces for students, starting in January 2011.

If you want more info on Tri-C, PM me. I paid a huge fee to get out of my lease early (before moving in actually) to avoid going to school there as even the Dean of Nursing as been extremely rude to me and I've been lied to more times than I can count. I just spoke with her again yesterday and yet again, was lied to. It was worth it to stay in Columbus and wait an extra 1.5 years for a school here.
Part of the experience was they revoked my admission because you need a background check done before you can be admitted. They mailed the notice to my old address even though I had updated it to the new one so I was never aware. I got a letter to my new address telling me my acceptance was permanetly revoked. I complained and they said if I did the background check within the next week, I could retain my seat. I did the background check ($75!) and called yesterday to see if it had been received and cleared and they said it had, but I had to reapply as my seat had been revoked and it would be yet another year of waiting. I was rather unhappy and provided the department with the name, time, and date of the person who told me I could retain my January 2011 seat and they said "sorry - things change" and disconnected the call. One thing after another of Tri-C screwing with students.
To the OP: When you have enough posts and are able to send PMs, please send me a message.

You can't fight the bureaucracy and expect to win.
That being said...
Everything you need to know about the nursing program at Tri-C is here. Nursing
No you can't reasonably expect to start the program next year. More than likely if you finished up all the Prereq's this Fall, did the background check, and took the HESI you'd start Spring of 2012. They are currently seating for Fall 2011... In the mean time you could finish up PSY 2020 BIO 2330, 2340 and 2500 as well as ENG 1020 Plus you'd need some liberal arts credits or something along those lines.
Thanks so much for your input on this. Spring 2012 is just so far from now.
Would anyone recommend doing an LVN program and then just completing the bridge later?
-Thanks!

You mean LPN?
No I wouldn't recommend that. By the time you finished the prereq's for that the program would likely be seating for Spring 2012 too.
Thanks for all the help Scott. I'm moving from Texas and LPNs are LVNs in Texas. Still not sure what I'll do but really appreciate all the advice I've gotten here.
Regardless of what you end up doing you need to educate yourself about your options then formulate a plan based on what works for you. Then STICK WITH YOUR PLAN! There are too many people both on here and in the classes I've taken at Tri-C that don't do that. They are constantly blathering on about oh well I can start on x date here or x date here with no clear plan or educational goals they are only looking for that instant gratification of starting right away. Formulate a clear plan with clear and concise educational goals then follow it through.

To the OP -- I am sorry that you got someone rude on the phone. Unfortunately, I think they get so many calls they get a bit short, but still no excuse..that has left you with a bad impression of the school.
I just got off the phone with a lovely woman at tri-c actually and have learned that indeed the Westshore campus in Westlake is placing for Spring 0f 2011. Since I have a spot for Fall of 2011 at Metro, I wanted to see what they planned to do about the additional seats opening up. This is what I have learned: They are contacting all Spring 2011 placements to see if they want to switch to Westshore and then they will contact the Fall 2011 placements once they have the Spring movement down. I hope that I can begin in Spring of 2011 at either campus -- I have been working now as a Nurse aide on a critical care floor and am anxious to get the clinicals underway and at least upgrade my position at the hospital to "tech" so I can do more with the patients.
I do think you should be able to get the prereqs and HESI test out of the way in time for Fall 2011 placement. With the additional spots for Spring at Westshore, I don't think Fall will fill up as fast.
As far as the LVN/LPN goes -- a lot of the nurses on my unit did just what you are thinking...get the LPN and then bridge. The only way to consider doing this would be a career school type of program -- they often don't have pre-reqs, just an admission test and a hs diploma and they are full-time 9 month or part-time 18 mo programs. If you have the ability to do this and can find somewhere placing for Fall of 2010, it might not be a bad option. There is a good program in Brecksville at the cuyahoga valley career center with availability in their part-time 18 month program that begins in October. The website indicates availability in their full-time 9 month program as well that begins in August. The key is getting an LPN job after graduation as most bridge programs require 1 yr of full-time work as an LPN before bridging. There are only two LPNs left on my unit and they are getting their RNs..very hard to get a hospital based LPN job in Ohio.
I agree with ScottE, make a plan...weigh all the options and do what is right for you and your family.
Good Luck and welcome to the world of Nursing School!

I didn't have a problem when I called down there either. I ask very specific questions though.
I got one of the letters yesterday asking if I wanted to switch from Spring 11 @ Metro to Spring 11 @ Westshore. Since there isn't a good way to get to Westshore from Strongsville I'm staying at Metro.

Is there a chance I can still get in the Westshore nursing program for Spring if I just took the test today?
