This is a new thread for anyone applying to the Mount St. Mary's College Accelerated BSN program in Los Angeles. Please feel free to share, and discuss your application process with us.
There is also lots of information available through previous MSMC threads!
Good luck to everyone!
Hi ladies (and gentlemen?),
Your posts have been very helpful, thank you! I just applied for the Fall 2009 program as well. I'm a bit concerned because I submitted my online application at the last minute - and by last minute, I mean Sunday March 15. My letters of rec and transcripts were also just sent last week. Am I alone here?? It seems like everyone got theirs in ahead of time. I do not have access to WebAdvisor yet... I assume I need to wait a week or two? I'm worried because from what I've read, mail tends to get lost during the application process.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. :)
Thanks, I hope to see you all in the Fall! Good luck!!
Hi
So I have applied for the Fall 2009 Accelerated BSN program. I was just wondering if anyone has gotten a interview yet and if not then does anyone know when they will be offering interviews. I also wanted to know if anyone knows how strict Mount St Mary's is on their 3.0 GPA requirement. I am really worried because my overall gpa is below a 3.0 but my math an science is well above that. so I am really worried that they will eliminate me just based on my overall cum gpa. Can anyone please help me an give me some advice. thanks
Tinybiz: You should wait a few weeks until they've processed your materials into the online system. I know it's aweful to not know if your documents were recieved. I'm doing the same thing with one of my recommendation letters right now. They pretty much won't talk to you at all if you've mailed stuff within the last two weeks.
Ocgal: We should expect interview invitations late April/early May. I would also suggest looking at some of the previous MSMC threads on here, they are super informative about the application process. I've heard from some people that they can be understanding of lower GPA's, but I really don't know how strict they are about the 3.0 cumulative requirement. I know that a lot of nursing schools are getting slammed with ever higher numbers of applications, so unfortunately this means they can be pickier about that kind of stuff.
Maybe you could try contacting the school when it's closer to interview time. I wouldn't try that now since they're indundated with people trying to make sure all their application documents were reveived.
Good luck!
Ocgal- I emailed the nursing dept with that exact Question because my cum gpa is 2.96, slightly under their 3.0 requirement. My pre-req GPA is a bit higher than that. I gave them my stats and they said that I still qualified. So I'm thinking they have a little bit of leeway on that.
I submitted my app on Friday, before the deadline. So excited! All my other options haven't seemed to pan out but I do have three more apps I'm waiting on. I've talked to several people who attend the Doheny campus (thats the campus for their AccBSN right? Not too sure at this pt myself) and I've heard really good things. Plus I don't live too far away so that's even better! If it's their Chalon campus, I'd have to move over there which I have mixed feelings on, mostly due to cost issues.
Good luck to all that applied! Hopefully that number won't be that high though cuz it'd give me more of a chance to get in. From what I gathered from the dept, they usually get about 200 apps in per round and accept about 40. About 25%, not too shabby
.
thanks touchhealh and lovinNP, but i do have another question:
for lovinNP: my cum gpa is 2.77 now if you round that lets just say 2.8, which is not very good, but my math an science is about a 3.3 or 3.4. I am really good with science classes but in undergrad I just was goofing off an didnt care about the sociology/history and other classes they made us take. I went to UCSD for undergrad, which is a great school, so I dont know what to do. I am VERY VERY worried, because I have applied to over 8 nursing schools already and have not gotten into any one of them. I have applied to NYU, Concordia, UNM, Nevada, Saddleback, Maryland, UBoston, USF etc etc. I have not yet heard from some of the schools but I already know for most of them that I didnt get in. I am in such stress and pressure right now because Mt St mary is my last option and I really want to go to that school since the program is great and since I live in southern cali. I have a friend that just got into Mt St Mary for the summer 2009 class in May. Her cum gpa is 3.2, but her math and science is around a 3.3 and she just took the bare minimum required science classes to get in. I am very happy for her, but I must say that its just not fair because her undergrad major was economics. I am not going to lie, I do think it is a bit unfair in general when students get into schools just beause their cum gpa is above 3.0 and even if their major was child education or whatever. I have noticed schools do tend to just look at the cum gpa and not what your major was. Because I majored in biochem, which I am not saying is more difficult that econ, but it was a hell of a lot more science courses and stress. I just am under so much stress. I am 25 years old and I have gotten A's in all of my anatomy an micro, physio etc classes, and I know I would make a great nurse. So good luck to you lovinnp, keep me posted on your application process, I hope you an I both get in.
for thoughhealth:
I have applied to mt st mary since january, they have all of my stuff already, I have checked on webadvisor and they have everything. My application says completed in review right now. I called the school yesterday and one lady told me that they might or might not be doing interviews for the Fall 2009 class, I am not sure if this is true or not. But can you or anyone tell me if going to an information session would help my chances of getting in? because I heard that if you go to an information session an then you can get an appointment with a academic advisor, so do you think this would help me show my interest in the school? I honestly really want to go to this school from the beginning, I applied to all the others just because to use them as a back up, but obviously that is not panning out. Please let me know if you know anything about the info session.
Well, I'm a ripe "old" age of 28, if you can really consider that old. At the community college where I'm taking my pre-requ's there are lots of returning olders students in their late 20's on up into their 50's who are aspiring to be nurses. I think the 2nd degree student ages are going to be considerably broader than first degree students.
touchhealth: I am 28 years "young" too. More power to us!! Funny because many of the students in my pre-req classes are barely old enough to drive. haha.
LovinNP: I have zero regrets about going back to school at this age. My attitude towards education 5 years ago was completely different, and I don't think I was prepared for this kind of challenge at that time. Life is short. Don't ever let age hold you back. I have the utmost respect for people who go back to school at 40, 50, 60...! I am thankful for all of my life experiences, and I'm looking forward to furthering my education with a "wiser" bunch.

I just spoke with someone in the admissions office who told me it takes two weeks to process any mailed documents and get them into the online system. So for any of you who still have anything listed as missing, this might be the reason. As long as you're certain it was mailed on whatever date, it should show up later.
Thought that might help some people.
My 2nd recommendation letter hasn't shown up yet, and that got me very worried!!
Good luck everyone!
