Mount Sinai.....Getting a foot in the door

U.S.A. New York

Ok, so I'm trying my hardest to get a job at this hospital, yes, even as a new grad (the glass is half full, right?). The thing is, each and every time I call the nurse recruitment office, the receptionist either tells me that she'll answer whatever questions I have (sorry to say, but I don't think she would be able to) and whenever I ask for a direct contact number/e-mail address for the nurse recruiter, she says to just keep calling the phone number that I have. No names have been given, they deny having an open houses/mini walk-in interview sessions, this is unbelievable. 303 job postings and yet no one can actually just walk into their recruitment office (this is what I was told)? What's worse is that I left messages on the nurse recruiter's answering machine service and was never called back!!! I am trying to be optimistic here, as I have heard wonderful things about their hospital, but the nurse recruitment department at Mount Sinai leaves much to be desired......Any helpful hints on what to do to at least get a callback?

I am getting this impression that no one here has done any customer service training . That is substantiated by what I have been reading and what people are saying and my own experiences. (I am in NYC)

With that said ... I personally would go down to the hospital directly and apply. I know these hospitals are hiring. The other thing I have heard is to go to the agencys. They are hiring new grads.

Do you know the name of these agencies? Seems everyone I contact is not doing new grads right now.

I had a similar experience. I asked about walk in interviews and receptionist had NO IDEA what I was talking about... She forwarded my call to the nurse recruiter's voicemail, but have not heard back (left the voicemail over 2 weeks ago).....

These were the name of agencies given to me amongst the nurses I networked with.

A Warning though:

It is agency so even if you are a new grad you will have to hit the floor running, with very little orientation. Whereas if you get hired FT they are obligated to train you.

The South is HIRING! New Grads. Go down there to get your experience. New Hospitals. Good customer service friendly skills and it is warm:):yeah:

I was going to say basically what fawnsternurse stated: Be careful in those agency jobs. My old program director was opposed the idea of me going to work for them (she's like a mentor to me as well). Don't jeopardize your license due to inadequate orientation/training.

Does anyone know what the hiring situation is for radiology techs at mt sinai, or other NYC hosptials?

Thanks!

People need to keep in mind that it is all about who you know. If you don't know anyone at Mt Sinai to help you get in, chances are slim. Recruiters do not call you back. I was given an interview at Mt Sinai by a recruiter, he took my transcript, told me I was an awesome fit and that he was going to get a nurse manager to meet with me......then dodged me for the next 6 months. For 2 months straight I called him every other day and he had a bs excuse every single time. I chalked it up to just a courtesy interview to blow steam....Having their phone number will not help you. They don't answer their phones and if they do, they will just give you the run around. The director of recruitment told me she doesn't even take applications from their website.

@laynaER, Wow that's terrible. You said the recruiter took your transcript, I'm assuming you're a new grad, yes? I had no idea they wanted transcripts, although I guess that should have been obvious. It sounds like you just walked into the recruitment office, which is something the receptionist vehemently urged me not to do. Ugh, and the female nurse recruiters are no better. You e-mail them, call them, fax them your resume/coverletter, and they never get back to you. Today I was told several times that they were conducting interviews and that if they were interested, they'd call me back. Interested in what, my voice? Because I don't understand how I'm supposed to stand out from a crowd of new grad RNs just by some answering machine message that they'll never respond to. At least if I got a call, e-mail telling me that I didn't meet their requirements so as to not waste both mine and their time, I'd appreciate Mount Sinai more. However, they don't even acknowledge you. I asked the receptionist if she received my faxed resume and she gave this long, exasperated sigh like I was annoying the crap out of her. And I'm thinking, I'm sorry, but that is your job. Please be glad you have one, I'm broke at the present moment.

I can't help to wonder whether there is a Mt Sinai nurse recruiter or two lurking on this board just sniveling as they read this thread ... :D

you mean like Jacksonville FL...r they hiring new grads there too...

One would hope! They should be sniveling; they are not doing their jobs at all. I'm supposed to be well-versed in customer service etiquette as a nurse, and yet the nurse recruiters aren't? Please! I have since stopped trying with Mount Sinai. I've done all that I could, time to focus on other places. I never put all my eggs in one basket anyway....
