Most effective way to apply for LTC as new grad?

Published

Hi everyone,

I am nearing graduation and will have my ADN in May, and would like to start in LTC. I have no prior healthcare experience and am still at my waitressing job that I've had for 5 years now. I know it will be tough to get a job out there, but I am wondering the most effective way of applying for these places. Many of the long term care facilities' websites do not even have an online application. Some of them do not even have openings available. Is it ok to walk in and give them a cover letter and resume, while asking for an application? What are some tips on getting hired at a LTC facility? I really enjoyed my clinicals in LTC. Thank you for reading.

Hello there most of the time for LTC, you are gonna walk in and fill out application and submit cover letter with resume. You can also ask to speak to DON (director of nursing) if they are there jus to kinda say hi and introduce yourself. Good luck in your job hunting adventures and dont give up, i have to admit as a newly grad LPN it was hard for me and took about a month but i got my first offer on friday and will start sometime next week :)

Send a cover letter and resume' to every place you'd like to work. Then follow it up with a phone call to HR or whoever does the hiring at the facility. You can also stop by to fill out an application. Just make sure that you look professional and have a copy of your resume' and license with you....you never know if someone is going to interview you that same day.

And to add to the above, I think it's best to wait until you actually have your license. I respect the fact you seem to want to get a jump on things but most places are never going to know what their hiring needs will be this far in advance & by May or June your resume will just be on the bottom of a big pile of resumes submitted after yours. Also, as a DON, I wouldn't have the time to interview a candidate that hasn't even graduated yet.Good luck to you.

I'm a new grad and found a job in an assisted living facility before my license came. They can legally hire med aides to work but as soon as my license comes I'll be an Lvn with them. Just waiting on the good ol state to send it!!
