Did anyone else get a call to fill in for a sick call today? Why was I not surprised?
Answer: Certain people seem to get sick conveniently at certain times.
I ignored the call and went back to sleep.

This whole thing confuses me. WHY can schedules not be worked out to accommodate peoples' preferences?
I am not religious. I don't have kids. My family is out-of-state and I enjoy visiting them when flights are cheap and lines are short. I am also a rabid football fan. I'd gladly cover someone's Thanksgiving and/or Christmas so DH and I can have fun on Super Bowl Sunday, college football season, or our summer birthdays.
Every time I think I'm going to leave OP nursing and go back to critical care, a post like this makes me think twice ...

Yeah that's not good. My husband's unit had a call-in for day and swing--a guy had signed up for a double shift on Super Bowl Sunday(the guy's regular day off) but then called in for both!
The problem with requiring people to make up weekends that they call in for is that it really is a punishment to those who ARE really ill. Thank goodness our hospital doesn't operate that way. The union wouldn't stand for that.

I called in sick on that day, but it was because I hurt my back the night before at work while lifting on a patient. Im sure they think it was because of the Super Bowl, but I absolutely have no interest in sports. I laid in bed the entire day, night, and the next day. Im still in terrible pain. But I agree, Ive noticed alot of call-ins on holidays and days of events. I just hate it for the ones who really are sick because they will be accused of abusing their sick time when they really arent.

That's all most of my patients could talk about....that, and the admits were coming up going "where's the remote? I'm missing the GAME!!!" (NM about your pain, VS, issues, meds, admit questions, etc.....) Seriously, it's just a football game....football will still be around after another couple of months....
