Moorpark College RN Program - Past, Current or Prospective Students

Published

Hello! I would like to know more about the RN program at Moorpark College (at Moorpark, CA). If you are a past, current or prospective student - please chime in and let me know what you think of the program. If you are a current student, what were your stats when you applied? Also, what is the typical schedule? Do you have lecture on certain days and then clinicals on other days? When/what time? If anyone at all has any info (or thoughts, etc.) on the program (positive or negative), please feel free to post! Thank you so much!

Hello everyone! I'm currently in my 1st semester at VC in the RN program and it's hell! I'm thinking of dropping out and re-applying at moorpark, I got in already but turned it down for VC. I've heard its much easier at moorpark, if anyone knows about the program let me know what it's like...this is how it is at VC...clinical tests: fail 2 times and you're kicked out (already had 7 this semester) and two dosage calculation tests with 90% or better after 2 tries you're kicked out. Each of the 6 tests this semester covers about 30+ chapters and each test has material from past tests (passing is overall 75%) with 1-2 care plans a week on top of everything. I'm leaving out the horrible and unorganized teachers since they could be at any school.

Oh wow, that's surprising and disappointing to hear because I had heard good things about VC's program! We just had the open house today but very introductory info on the program. However, they did mention that passing is overall 75% and on dosage calculation exams, Moorpark requires 90% or better also. Not sure at what point they kick you out as that was not discussed...

Hi!

sorry to hear about your experience at VC. here is what I know:

I just took the TEAS at Moorpark a month ago and during the test I met 2 girls who were dropped from the program for something similar to what you are saying. They had some harsh words about the program at Moorpark, including complete chaos and disorganization throughout the semester. For what they were saying once they drop you , you have to re take the TEAS and re-apply to the program!! yiaks!---as an aspiring nursing student at Moorpark, I frankly feel intimidated at this point. I just attended the open house today and to be honest with you, I don't think they are very organized either. I am waiting for other two colleges to get back to me, I will seriously consider their offer, if they accept me.

Goodness, so sorry to hear about your experience. My sister's friend went to VC and transferred to MC Nursing after a year and absolutely loves it! After attending the open house tonight, I feel that MC has an excellent program. However, I am still waiting to hear from one other particular school, therefore haven't made a final decision about attending just yet. Well I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors!

I've been wondering if you're able to transfer from VC to moorpark, thanks!

Thanks for the info! I highly recommend doing research on all the schools, I'd even take it as far as going on campus and talking to the girls in the program. At 11 weeks my class of 60 has lost 11 people, and the drop date is coming up after a test and from what I hear it's seems like half the class will be dropping due to bad grades, although I'd rather say unfair tests and extremely poor 'teaching'. Good luck to everyone!

No problem! I hope it all works out for you and that you can transfer soon! :)

It's pretty much the same thing at MC. You need to pass a medication test with a 90% (2 x tries) or you are out. Exams are 4 times per 8 weeks with a cumulative final. Care plans are one every 8 weeks but 35 pages long. The instructors are fantastic but they do expect students to know their material when they are in clinical. The program is very organized and the staff are great. They have a new building with a skills lab that is top notch. But as with all nursing programs, MC's program is very difficult. The exams are hard and becomes even harder as you move from semester to semester. But like someone said, they have a 100% NCLEX passing rate.

BTW I graduated from VC 16 years ago.

Hey everyone! :) Now that you all have at least a semester under your belt, would you mind filling me in on some of your experiences? How are the teachers? Did you sign up for skills lab? Do you recommend a good amount of physio review before entering their program? Do the teachers let you record lecture? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I've been accepted into the Fall 2014 semester and this program is on my mind 24/7! :)

Is 73 points a competitive amount? Would anyone have an idea?,

I was pleased with my first semester...it was a lot of work but I felt I learned a lot. I would recommend taking skills lab because it does offer you a lot of opportunities to practice clinical skills and/or reinforce your theory. I would suggest taking it pass/no pass...that way, there's no added pressure from that class.

i would not suggest reviewing Physio unless you feel you seriously need it. Exam questions are NOT going to test you on physiology. You'll learn very quickly that nursing school exams are nothing like what you've been used to. So far, all the instructors I've had was fine with recording...just make sure to ask at the beginning. My investment in a decent recorder was indeed well worth it! A lot of people try to use their phones but it doesn't necessarily capture everything unless you're right in front of the instructor.

mannurse11 - hard to say...it really depends on the pool of applicants you're competing with. If most of the applicants you're applying with has a higher success score, it doesn't fare as well but if you happen to be at the higher end in that group, your chances are certainly better.

Thank you for your response, Bratty! You're awesome for taking the time! How do you like the teachers? Are they helpful? Do they go the extra mile for their students?

The theory instructor we had for the first 8 weeks (each semester is split into two 8 week blocks) was awesome. I was lucky to have her also for clinical as well. There are several clinical instructors, each assigned to a different location. All the instructors I interfaced with were very responsive and supportive...especially if they can see that you are there to learn. The second theory instructor for part 2 is not returning next semester so not much feedback there is going to be helpful. Carol, the skills lab instructor is super nice and always available too.

Every instructor has their own style...the key is do your best to mold to it. Like all programs, some are going to be better than others ( for different people) because we all have different learning styles but if you made it this far, it's not going to preclude you from succeeding in the program if you put in the effort. Good luck!
