Montgomery College, Fall 2011, 1st semester students

Published

Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

I'm certified!!! :)

We had a huge class...about 18 of us. It took about 4 hours but the time went by pretty quickly because there were 2 instructors so they split us up into 2 big groups and they were both really funny! There was one guy in my class who just graduated from MC's nursing program and he was getting recertified before taking the NCLEX. He told me that out of the 110 students that started the program in his class, only 50 graduated!!! He said Blount is a really good teacher (I think she is at Shady Grove) but to stay away from Flannery (but I think we don't get her until NU 230)!

PreChecks...DONE

CPR...DONE

Next up, my physical on Monday!

I hope to hear from Marissa soon.

Congrats, Andrea!!

Blount got bad reviews but it doesn't tell the whole story...Wow, only 50 graduated? That's sad. I wonder if it's too demanding or life just got in the way. We do have 4yrs to complete it. I'd be pretty PO'd if it takes me any longer than 2. I'll do PreCheck before end of the weekend...

I'm hoping the same about Marissa... Also, Tina hasn't been on for a while.

I forgot to ask about color for scopes. Anyone know if we have flexibility w/ that?

I ordered the rest of the required books. On the book list given to us @ orientation: Under NU110 required books, it has nursing drug reference of your choice, but on MC's on-line course page/bookstore icon, it has Nursing 2011Drug Handbook as a recommended book. Anyway, this is the one I got for the drug reference.

I'm getting ready to order my books too. Did you guys get a new or used Fundamentals of Nursing textbook? The difference on Amazon is about $50 but I'm sure a new one would come with the CD and the used one probably not?

Wow, I just read the reviews for the Fundamentals book on Amazon...they're TERRIBLE!!

I got a used book and found one w/ a working CD. All the books I've gotten are used except the pocket book.

That is a terrible graduation rate! I've heard it is tough and rigid but very good so I guess some people just aren't able to manage it. I was wondering though...if we can't get all of our stuff in on time (being out of our control) and they refuse to give us an extention, can we start the following semester since we've already been accepted and have 4 years to complete the program????

I guess I am just worried with all of this medical stuff. They sure don't give us a lot of time to get this stuff done and dealing with doc offices and such is usually a very time consuming process. I feel like they wasted a lot of precious time for students in 1) extending the application deadline and 2) taking so long between acceptance letter and orientation. Sorry, I don't mean to always be complaining. I'm just stressed. Hopefully I will be feeling more at east after my physical on Tuesday. Oh...and today I received a letter that I'm been summoned for possible jury duty!!!!

As for books. I am buying what I can used unless there isn't much of a cost difference between new and used. I know one of the books I got comes with a cd-rom but I don't remember which. I almost bought the pocket drug book today cause I had a 40% off coupon from Borders but I held off. I also found a couple of nice medical dictionaries which we were advised to get. I'm going to keep looking for deals on the others.

As far as the scopes, there wasn't anything specific written on the paper we got about uniforms and equipment. So I would think it doesn't matter but maybe ask Dianne about it or wait until registration when the vendor is there.

Just looked it up - my Fundamentals book comes with a cd.

Health Assessments for Nursing Practice also has a CD and Clinical Drug Therapy has a DVD.

Nikki- I agree with you.

You mentioned the black scopes cost more...

Calculate with Confidence is on sale at Amazon right now. $46.38.

Just ordered all my books on Amazon. The Health Assessment one went up almost $15 since yesterday! But another book went down almost $15 since yesterday so I guess it evens out. Alot of the books said "Order soon---only 3 left in stock" or something similar. So I guess alot of people are ordering from Amazon! I should get my shipment in mid-July. All of the books came out to about $450...and that doesn't even include the ATI Skills Modules Series that will be an extra $80-$90! Things are really adding up now...
