Montgomery College, Fall 2011, 1st semester students

Published

Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

Hey Nikki, that was interesting. I'm sure all hospitals have horror stories to some degree. Everyone I know calls it Shady "Grave". I was wondering though, my husbands has been patient at both SG and MG, is that an issue?

I didn't think it matter if you were a patient in the hospital but rather if you work there. I've never heard it called Shady Grave but I often wondered why people who lived in the area would go to Holy Cross instead to deliver their babies.

I've heard it called Shady "Grave" several times before as well. My MIL stayed there several times before she was diagnosed with liver cancer, and they never caught it...Montgomery General did when the cancer was already pretty well progressed. So of course my MIL hates Shady Grove. Everything else I've heard have just been rumors, so I don't really know what to make of it...

Nikki, when you did the PreCheck thing...did you click on StudentCheck and then click on "Order Student Background Check"? The instructions on the blue sheet say to click on the "Student" button after clicking on the StudentCheck link, but I didn't see any such button. I only see the "Order Student Background Check" option. Is this what you did? I just wanna make sure before I do it.

Never mind, I got it :)

PreCheck(s)...check. Lol

Holy Cross is well known for their labor and delivery unit. I think they also have a good reputation for pediatric unit. Nikki, you mentioned you want to work w/ children so you might want to look into it.

I'll work on the Precheck this weekend, I can no longer think clearly...

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner Andrea. I believe I did as you stated. Is that what you ended up doing? I hope so. I had to do the two options separately. Be nice if you could do one checkout.

Kristian, thanks for that info on Holy Cross. I have a feeling HC will be in high demand because of it's reputation. I just wish I knew what units we'd be in during our clinical.

It's ok Nikki. I did the same as you...2 separate check-outs as well.

I've heard that med-surg is usually the first round for clinicals which, according to my stepmom (an NP), is basically the post-surgery floor.

Ok, I believe I've made my clinical choice. I'm going to opt for SG in the afternoon as my first choice. Second choice will be MGH in the afternoon. And then SG in the morning as my third choice. I mapped them all out last night and the others are double the distance/time from my house. After the first semester, once I get a feel for the program/routine, then maybe I will try to do a clinical closer to campus.

Nikki, we decided on the same 1st and 2nd choices.

My appt went well. Took about 2 hrs. (appt time 10:30). FYI, you pay for your services first. They take you from room to room depending on the procedure. The lab, cashier, pharmacy are on the 1st floor. Ck in for appt is 2nd floor.

I had my physical, bloodwork for titers: varicella, MMR, hep B and CBC and dose of tdap. I also did the urinalysis. I think we need CBC and urine for a complete physical, thought I'd just get it done, in case. I couldn't get the PPD 'cause they are closed this wknd, so results can't be cked. I did not get a flu shot today. Can we wait for the flu shot until later this yr or is it we can wait only if we had one the previous yr? My have 2 appts next wk for PPD and result reading and a follow up visit in 2 wks- it takes about 2wks for bloodwork results and I think the NP has to fill out additional info for the paperwork at that time. Anyway, I was told to come back for a follow-up.

I just called to make another appt for 4wks for the 2nd dose of tdap and the lady I spoke w/ told me to double ck w/ MC. This is confusing 'cause the NP I saw went over the 3 does w/ me.

Also, the back of the physical examination sheet states: Seasonal Influenza: seasonal flu distributed in October...that means to wait at least 'til Oct?? Prof. Matthews said UMD comes to MC each yr for flu shots and she thinks it'll be around Nov. this year. Do we wait until then??
