Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

Thanks for the book recommendation Tina! I believe Crocs are a big no-no, but if you want to be sure I would e-mail Dianna Matthews.

Kristian, I've been picking out my sites too. I definitely want a 10-hour shift but I'm going to be relying on my mom taking my son to school one day a week AND I am most definitely NOT a morning person so it will be a bit of an adjustment for me. But I really want to get a feel for a typical day at "work" and also be able to devote a full day to clinical that way the rest of the week can be focused on my other classes and household duties :) I think my first choice would be Suburban, followed by WAH, and lastly Shady Grove. MGH and the Doctor's Hospital are so far for me; and I've been a patient at Holy Cross several times. I'm soooo nervous about which number I'm going to pick for the lottery. It'll either make it a great start to my first semester or a lousy one...

By the way, it was great meeting you ladies today! I think we're gonna have a great support group for the next 2 years! :)

Oh yeah, I'm going to email Dianna and ask her about the PDA/phone issue. I'll let you know when I get a response.

Good morning ladies! It was so awesome meeting you in person yesterday and getting to know each other better before the orientation.

Hi Tina - welcome! I bought myself a pair of white sketchers and I think they will be fine.

So have you all started doing stuff? I was looking around for textbooks last night. I am planning to do the criminal background check and prepay for the drug/alcohol screening today.

I really didn't want a 10 hour clinical, not the first semester anyway. I can't do Tues mornings because my little one will be starting his preschool transition class and I want to be there for that. So that leaves me with afternoons either at MGH or SG. SG is definitely the closest for me but I kind of like the idea of MGH because it is seems away from the hustle/bustle of the heavy traffic flow.

I'm most concerned about the Health records form. Seems like so much and I don't want to mess it up, particularly with titers/vaccines. Andrea, can you please share what you clarified with Prof. Matthews about the titers/vaccines?

So "clinicals" aren't always at the facility? I knew we had lab clinical but I thought the clinical/facility we chose meant we would be at that facility during those times, not in the class lab. Am I confused?

Hey, it was great to meet you all on person too!

Nikki- I like the second watch, I'm partial to it b/c it looks like mine lol!

I too am confused about the vacc/titer. We need vacc and a positive titer for Varicella. correct? What else do we need vacc and titers for?

Basically, if you've gotten all those vaccines at some point in your life you should start out by getting tigers for everything. If you're lucky and all the titers come back p0ositive then the only vaccines you would need are the Tdap and influenza, along with the PPD test. If, however, any titers co9me back low or negative, you will need to get vaccinated for that particular disease. The titers are pretty cheap whereas the vaccinations are expensive so I'm hoping I still have plenty of ommunity built up agaonst all those diseases!

As for the PDA/phone question, Dianna emailed me back and said cell phones are not allowed in patient rooms or in the halls but they are allowed in other areas of the hospitals. She didn't really address my question of whether or not it would be beneficial to have access to a PDA during clinicals but I'm assuming the answer to that is yes based on other people's responses to related threads.

Thanks for the info Andrea. That helps to clarify things up. I have my physicall scheduled for Tuesday. Are you guys going to go to UMD for your titers/vaccines? Do they accept health insurance? I'm hoping my physician will give me lab paperwork to get tested for everything the same day so I can get it out of the way.

And what about the hearing and eye tests? I recently had my eyes checked so I guess I could just submit the results from my eye exam? What was she talking about when she referred to the whisper test?

Andrea, thanks for the clarification. I'm fairly sure UMD accepts ins. I'm getting everything that I can done, there. My appt is tomorrow. I guess the whisper test is a method in which the person stands away/behind you and speaks in a whisper to test your hearing (?). Are they talking about a standard eye chart test or one done by an ophthalmologist or optometrist?

The health records form says "distance vision". Hopefully the doc will know what that means. So does the whisper test fulfill the hearing portion of the form? Let me know how your appt goes tomorrow. I'd like to know if it goes quickly and without complications in the process.

Thanks, Nikki. I will let you know what happs. I'm crossing my fingers for a smooth and easy appt.
