Montgomery College, Fall 2011, 1st semester students

Published

Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

I don't know if it was in there but this is what I was told from another student in the program and the program rep who came to an info session at the gtown campus. Either 1 10-hr or 2 5-hr shifts/wk.

Good to know. Thank you both. :)

I got similar info on a previous MC thread: 1 full day or two half days a wk.

Great. Thanks, Kristian.

I heard from someone who's in the program that we're going to be expected to know pretty much everything we learned in A&P and that if you don't remember much, to definitely brush up on it because anything is fair game to be asked/mentioned. I HATE being unprepared; especially when it's something I know I have stored somewhere in my memory! I would hate to be asked a question on a quiz/test/lecture discussion that I remember learning but can't remember the answer to...

As for the clinical shifts, that's a tough choice. I think I'd prefer the 10-hour shift only because I want to get a feel of what a "real" 12-hour shift would be like since that's what I'm hoping to work when I eventually get a job. But then I'd hate having to wait a whole other week to get in there again...I wonder what times they'll have for that? I have to drop my son off at preschool at 9am every morning so hopefully I can start after that time. If not, I'll probably have to go for the two 5's.

Any hospitals you girls are keen on doing clinicals at? I'd prefer Holy Cross since I can literally walk there from my house but I'm not too picky, as long as it doesn't take me more than 20-30 minutes to get there.

It doesn't make sense that MC requires certain courses to be completed almost a yr prior to the program. We had to complete A & P 1and 2 to be given preference and they had to be done by fall 2010 for fall 2011 admission. That's a long time to retain all we've learned. We should start reviewing...

Andrea, I'm leaning towards a place closer to home, though I am interested in NIH and Beth-Naval Medical. Does anyone know if they are among the list?

I don't think they are on their Kristian. If you go to the nursing program website there is a list on there of clinical sites.

I really wanted to do Children's but since we change every semester (from what I understand), I might opt to stay closer to home and choose Shady Grove. Sibley, Holy Cross, and Georgetown (where I had both my kids) but these are far away.

Does anyone know what depts we will be in per semester for our clinicals? I heard the first one is in med/surg. I am assuming maternal/infant care would be the last semester since that is when our class on the subject is. That is where I really want to be.

Here is the list and the link:

I thought clinicals were done by lottery and that we don't get to choose where we go. That was my understanding. I would prefer to stay close to home (ie, WHC, CNMC, G'town, or Sibley), but I'm happy to go wherever they send me. I think Shady Grove would be the furthest away for me, but I'm sure it's a great facility.

When I worked for the FDNY as an EMT, I was assigned to the Bronx and was devestated. I lived in Brooklyn at the time and the Bronx was the furthest borough I could have been sent to. Luckily, a fellow EMT, who lived in the Bronx, offered to switch with me. So, I ended up in Harlem instead. Still a decent commute, but closer than the Bronx. Looking back on it, I think I should've just kept my mouth shut and gone where they sent me. Maybe I would've liked working there. I didn't even give it a chance because I was so concerned about how long my commute was going to be. Just something to think about.

As I understand it...it is done by lottery system. The people with the lowest numbers get to choose first. So if your first option is full, you have to go to option 2 or 3.
