Money for LVN education?

Well, people will probably hate me for saying this, but my entire class was able to attend nursing for for free. We weren't poor or any other trait that would qualify one for a grant but the ex-governor of California signed a nursing bill that allotted money to future nursing students in order to get more in the field. A financial aid person came to the school, interviewed us and our tutition was waived. There are programs out there but sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time.

I attended a private, very expensive LVN program at a proprietary school, also known as a for-profit career college. Some students were able to reduce their tuition by receiving Pell grants, but a grant of a couple thousand dollars will barely chip away at a tuition of $20,000. Personally, I financed my tuition with a Sallie Mae student loan.

Some students in my class were able to get their tuition paid for by I believe the Texas Workforce Commission because they were unemployed and it was a career training program from a list of others. Of course this is specific for Texas, but there might be similar programs in different states.

The Pell Grants are a good place to start. If you don't qualify for those you can try the Stafford and Perkins federal loans. They're specifically for students and some of the Stafford ones are actually subsidized (the gov't will pay any interest accumulated on the loan, so you only pay the original amount back later). Don't hate me, but my program was fully paid for through government funding. This included tuitions, books, uniforms, etc. The only thing we had to get was a sponsor (LTC) to pay $1500 of the program. It was my understanding that the cost of the program was approximately $17,000. The problem with getting a sponsor is you have to work for them for 2 years.

A new LVN program is starting in the Fall of 2007, but all the students will have to pay for everything. Our school is in California and had a list of possible tuition assistance. They are listed below:

Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGW) – waives colleges fees except health fee

Federal Pell Grants

Academic Competitive Grants

Cal Grants B & C

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOP&S)

Veterans Services Benefits

Bureau of Indian Affairs Grant (BIA)

Institutional Scholarships

I myself got a pell grant and also got a small grant from a local womens group who support women returning to education. Find a local job source place or something along that line and they should be able to telll you of local chapeters or companys who offer grants.

California has alot more to offer those in college than here in AZ. We dont have teh BOG here or cal grants(obviously). it's all based on income so if you dont qualify for pell you dont qualify for any free money. However there is a workforce type of program but the funds are on hold right now so I wont know anything until Aug. and even then it's only up to $3K. My tuition is $7500 so I guess that would still be a big chunk.....I will just have to keep my fingers crossed....
